After previously saying that I didn't like the idea of GP shifting or race shift I decided to give it a second try for 5 days and then on day 6 see if I could still ride a motorcycle in regular shifting or if I would mess it up.

It's not underrated, it's just not as popular as some other on youtube. His videography is beautiful and will surely be widely popular by the time... What's more important is the quality of what he does and the quality of the population that follows him. At least that's my belief. Quality over quantity. Doing what you love over taking good grades/ratings, etc. 🙏

I have GP shift on my S1000RR and standard shifting on my FZ-09. My S1000RR has reverse shift because I found that normal shifting makes the quickshifter shift like garbage (in comparison with GP on my Attack Performance rearsets) and hit false neutrals like no tomorrow, which the S1000RR is already infamous for. For the FZ-09 I run standard because of a limitation of the stock rear set (you physically can't change it) otherwise I would have it set up as GP too; everything about GP shifting just feels natural to me. Personally, I just have to remind myself right before riding either one and once I'm on the bike it comes naturally with no messed up shifts. Maybe it helps my mind that they feel like two entirely different bikes. Love your videos, man. Keep it up!

Congrats! Your the first person who has done a video who has done this change correctly. The bolt needs to be from the bottom to get the lever to squeeze it onto the splines as intended. This can eventually get loose on the splines over time and could skip, wear on the splines and damage the splines if not done correctly. You did do it right. You are pretty brilliant fyi. I recommend your videos for riders to learn from.

I plan to change mine and leave it there. I am planning g for track days. I feel there is many reason gp riders have this setup. Foot clearance improved exiting turns for up shifts, they are on the ball of their foot through the turn so in gp shift they are able to get into the next gear faster, the positive feel of shifting up a gear by pushing the lever down, less likely to hit neutral when shifting from 1st to second or be stuck between gears (false neutral), and come on, its fun to feel like your doing things like the pros. How can you not feel good about that. Bikes are for fun, so why not improve the feeling of fun. Don't judge other riders for how they achieve fun or feel they are posers. Enjoy your bike to its fullest any way one can. Great Channel FYI.

Personally I don’t understand why bikes aren’t GP Shift standard, physics and riding dynamics dictates it’s the superior method. The body goes up and forward when braking why then do I have to push down and backward (depending on pegs) against momentum to downshift. When I first discovered this is was horrified 😂 GP shift forever 💪

That and when taking off from a start you may need to lean a fair bit into a left turn on the street. With standard shift that puts your foot between the shift lever and the street.
@TheDuke1997
@TheDuke1997 5 жыл бұрын
In a situation of sudden braking when your foot is just sitting on the peg and off the shift lever it is much easier to quickly shift down by simply pushing down on the lever rather than getting your foot under it and pulling up.

I feel when using standard shifting and coming to a stop on the road in town going from 4th gear to 1st gear quickly its much easier and quicker and sometimes necessary and less work. but when shifting up on acceleration you have time in between shifts. On the other hand using GP shifting, I can see the up shifting by pressing down would be satisfying but not more functional.

"GP shifting" I had a "race shift pattern" on my 1000 cc Yoshimura Katana race bike in 1984. Primary reason was the rear set race pegs were so far up and back that I needed to face the gear lever backward instead of forward to be able to reach it. And by rear sets I mean jockey position, you could not ride on the road like that for long periods. As to shifting on corners, when your knee is facing out and you are off the saddle to the inside of the corner the mechanics of your leg forces you to pull your foot back so only your toes are on the peg not the arch of your foot. If you wanted to shift up you have have to push your foot forward to get under the shift lever. With a race shift you can just give it a tap on top to shift without having the get your toes forward enough to get under it. Likewise when you lean to side with gear shift on the outside of the corner other way and get off the saddle your foot is pulled back on the peg just so you can get off the bike on the other side. It also take less energy to push your foot than lift something with it and possibly a shade faster shifting. As for road bikes, pegs are so low when cornering you might scrape the ground with toes if you had a standard pattern so that comes into it.

Enjoyed to vid too it is an interesting topic actually. I watched your 5 list previously and Ill check out some others too. The brain switch issue, driving a car I started to left foot brake many years ago driving after driving sprint karts for a while. The benefits I wont go into but just to say that i have no issue driving a manual trans and using right foot to brake instead, the brain just switches not problem. One thing I did find however is that for some period left foot braking in cases or emergency braking I reverted to my right foot to brake as Id done most of my life driving cars. After some more time left foot braking driving the car I noticed next time I had to emergency brake I didn't revert to right foot brake and used left foot, or the time after that. So it took a while (some months) to convert fully and make it instinctive reaction so I don't revert to the old way in an emergency. It might be the same with the reverse shifter for a while using it till you get it wired in the brain and it becomes instinctive reaction you don't have to think about doing. If you get into a situation you have to brake hard and step down a few gears you might find you revert to the old way, at least for some period until its fully instinctive to the race shift pattern.

That's kinda funny I didn't have any difficulty on riding with different kind pattern of shifter. Started riding when I was 6 on ttr50. (3speed all down) pass forward started to ride manual, 12 years old me riding my Gramp's kawasaki b1125. (fully manual 4 speed all down) then I got little older 15y.o my dad bough me my new first partner 2017 wr250r to get used on 6 speed transmission, which 1d5up and have a service for school reason he bought me that bike. (Old my doesn't want to be my uber. lazy old man!😂) And now I'm 18 got little money from my part time job I got a 2017 r6 which I experimented with gp shift got used after an hour riding it instantly reminded of my old bike shifting pattern but with 2 more gears. "Not bragging this is my experience"

Literally the open of your video was almost identical to what I commented. It really is a more natural feeling when upshifting and braking and downshifting. And it's not going to completely reprogram your brain that that's the only way you'll ever be able to ride. If that was the case you wouldn't be able to learn how to ride GP in the first place. The really cool thing is now you can ride exotic bikes that come stock that way and be fluent in both shift patterns.

Every new bike I get I switch to GP shift. Bought an 04 R6 that was setup with GP shift and didn't come with the linkage for regular shift, different shift rod since older bikes were not as simple as newer ones, so got used to it. Made it 3 days with my 06 R1 before ordering new rearsets for GP shift. Luckily with the 14 R1 I had and with my current 13 R1 just that simple as flipping the knuckle around. Does take a bit getting used to but I find shifting easier.

I've not used GP shift. I can definitely see the benefits on a track but I feel on a road bike especially with a bike that can launch off in 1st and go to 80mph without changing gear. I'd find it more valuable to be able to drop a gear quicker while cruising and disappear than to upshift while hard accelerating. Reckon smaller engine road bikers who need to use the gears more and go up quicker this could definitely be a nice improvement.

I just bought a Suzuki GSX-S1000 ABS and it had been done this way! I don’t like it on this bine it’s more of a straight line rocket you don’t need to shift gears on curvy roads it’s got so much torque you can just leave it in 5-6 th gear and pull faster then you will want to go on it! And the power is there from 3k rpm so it actually helps to have the upshifts be up and not down cause that’s the way g force pulls you is natural to pull up on that lever.

I had a friend do that to his new R6 and it was OK. Then he let his buddy take a ride and he ripped the gears out of it. So I don't no if u need to get that low on a public roadway or not heh

The reason a couple of homies and I do GP shifting is because one night we ran into a bike we were boosting and we almost got caught because we kept stalling it. None of us even heard of GP shifting so it took forever for us to figure out how to get out of 6th, 5th, and 4th gear. We didn't know what the hell was going on and eventually had to ditch the bike and the cops on foot. So I switched mine to make it harder to steal.

Lol that's a good reason to do it!

i dont see any advantage in normal riding! So why would you change it just for riding arround?
@ChaosCauses
@ChaosCauses 6 жыл бұрын
For the reasons I mentioned in the video, positive gear change feeling, less false neutrals, more natural gear changes under braking and acceleration or maybe just for some good old fun.

Chaos Causes ok, yesterday I checked if it was possible, sadly my ktm don't want to (I can't just flip the shifter on the other side). It has to wait until it's possible but I'll remember it :)

Chaos Causes 😂. But what i mean is, if youve ever ride a moped, it is exactly gp shift minus the hand clutch. And in my country especially, most people's first bike is that abd then gradually upgrading to more powerful bike.

4 days is not long enough for it to become second nature. ride your bike for 2 years every day in gp and then try going back. you will make a hash of it.
@ChaosCauses
@ChaosCauses 6 жыл бұрын
That's a bit long for a video... I was also comfortable after 4 days and the point is to be able to ride bikes in both setups not to make a hash of it.
