imo watercolor pencils work the best in tandem with watercolor paints. They work amazing with small fine details that might be harder to achieve with regular watercolors plus the gradients you can get can be very precise. They're good for correcting mistakes too so I recommend them for watercolorists who really want good control.

I completely agree with you that watercolor pencils are a weird medium that doesn't really work just by itself. They make more work than fun, you cannot get any smoothness down and their colors are super bright and unnatural you'd either need a gazillion pencils or have to mix them (which makes them mudy super easily). idk... they're just glorified colored pencils for me :'D I still appreciate that you gave them another chance!
@KaseyTheGolden6 жыл бұрын

they're pretty good for quick field stuff and can give interesting textures when you mix the dry pencils technique with the water blurring stuff. My grandmother was a fantastic watercolour pencil artist when she used to create, some of her landscape stuff on her walls is crazy good. I dont think theyre super great for the kind of stuff you usually see on insta where watercolour artists try and replicate digital stuff, or do very light watercolour work, but they're great for landscapes and more traditional work

Watercolor pencils are quite weird to use, but you should give watercolor markers a try! Recently I’ve learned in my own art that you’ll always be disappointed if you try to create art that doesn’t make you happy, or doesn’t fit into your style. I think it’s awesome to try new things and branch out but also always stay true to yourself. I think you’ll always do your best when your painting for you, and in your own way. You don’t need to make art like anyone else but you! And we all love your goofy style too!!

I generally use watercolour pencils to put in values, especially if it's in a narrow or hard to paint area on my piece. I also have mixed the paint of the pencil with watercolour paint to achieve a tone I've wanted. They're really useful for skintones and eyes. I do find that the mix of the 2 mediums can really give depth and 3D effects to an eye. It's just a case of practice. Also, it depends on the type and make of water pencil. Something like Inktense is really eye catching, and is ink, where as a true watercolour pencil the colour is very different, and handles differently. Often cheaper brands leave lines, after being wetted down. Sometimes this is cheap pencil. Or, it can be artist error, where we've placed a heavy hand on the pencil and scored the paper, so the colour leaks into the lines creating texture.. I must have tried 20 to 25 different kinds of pencil. I've 2 favourites, Caran de-ache, and Faber-Castell. Both have a good number of colours on offer and open stock. However, you can't beat a good watercolour pallet.
@UTleochi6 жыл бұрын
I second that! Watercolour pencils aren't an "easy" medium. One needs to practice with them to get satisfying results, and the Caran d'Ache and Faber-Castell definitely are the best. Cheaper pencils do tend to leave ugly marks and get muddy or chalky. This artist does amazing work with watercolour pencils: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWOxZq19Yrplapo and that one, too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnLQaH5ujNeDbqs

I know you don't particularly like watercolor paper (I dont either) but I have found a fun way to get use out of them. I often do very sketchy drawings with them in one color. After I activate them and they end up super simplistic and cute, and also put the pencils to some good use! With the one color being used at different values to line and color the entire thing, it gives it an interesting and planned result without the effort of pencil sketching everything.

Check out the Moo eraser! It’s a solid eraser but the shavings clump and roll together in this kneaded texture. It’s really nice because instead of having eraser dust to clean up, you have two or three of these long noodles to throw away!

Definitely stick to what you like, but I do recommend different water brushes? I got some cheap ones online in a 3 pack and it I really like it! water only came out when I squeezed. So it worked like a regular brush but when you have to clean it off you just squeeze and dab it on a napkin. So no more cup of water for paint sessions. It made watercoloring much more portable and easy!!

Try Arteza water brushes. What makes them different is the control of the water. You don't squeeze the whole brush handle to release water. There is a button on either side of the brush and it gives you more control. There is a 6 count pack (3 round/3 flat in small, medium, and large). The rounds have really great points and the small and medium are awesome for detail. They are inexpensive too!

When I use watercolor pencils, I scribble them on a separate piece of paper and use that as a palette. I find it easier to mix colors (scribble multiple colors in one place) and I won't have to add a lot of water to get rid off the pencil-texture.

The biggest reason i use watercolor pencils is for really quick life drawings. Like if i see someone i want to draw its easy to sketch out really fast and then comr back with water to add color and shading. Also! Ive found that derwent waterbrushes dont spit out a lot of water and they come in different sizes and shapes! Hope that helps

I think the benefit of watercolor pencils is finer control, which is something someone who's developed control with watercolor paints doesn't need. So it's not a surprise you don't favor them, but someone like me (who has shakey hands and is struggling to learn watercolor paints) they're great.

I understand that you don't like how they affect your art but I think I should put this out there for people wanting to try it and get some positives from an avid user They're extremely vivid, If you like drawing in solid colours this is great for that. In regular water colour the colour can get faded when dry and will appear pale when watered down too much, while this fills in the area and doesn't fade that often if it's decent brand They're easier to control, since you're just filing the shape and smoothing it, it's a lot easier to keep in control. But they can blend into near by colours They're a good starting point to learn how water moves and works, how it blends and drips. If you're just starting off this is a little like a tutorial. There are a lot of negatives, and from experience water brushes tend to pack the paper with too much water for my tastes. But I do have a problem with drawing in extremely pale colours when I use watercolour so I prefer to use it to break my boundaries in art a little
