Orchids are hella underrated in builds. They are such good dart frog plants.
@The_Crucible7147 ай бұрын
There are tons of miniature orchids now available for relatively easy terrarium culture. The epiphytic species require high humidity (how they obtain water) but most also need good air circulation. I’ve achieved excellent results using a misting system alternating with small circulating fans in the top. If the roots are kept too wet they often develop root rot and weakened plants become susceptible to plant pests especially if the air becomes totally stagnant. Cycling the light promotes blooming.

They are incredibly underrated, but can be challenging as the crucible mentioned on this

You guys do some really awesome builds. Low-key jealous-lol! For our next build we are going to try out some orchids again. Buying a few from glass box tropicals and we’ll see what happens. We live in such a dry climate that it’s difficult to get the humidity and air flow just right for orchids. I liked this format of you taking an existing enclosure and reworking it.
@MikeTytula7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! For dry climates, I'd recommend a glass top and a small circulation fan within the terrarium!

Thanks for the tip! I have considered it, but these tanks have a decent amount of ventilation already. Although, if you can send some links on IG or my facebook that would be awesome!

African violets and various gesneriads like high humidity but do not like to have soaking wet leaves at all. Their fuzzy leaves retain water which will cause them to rot away especially if the plant crowns are constantly kept wet.

It definitely dries in there, but hopefully where I put it now will lend to better growth

Fantastic video. I’m actually in the process of getting some plants for some terrariums I’m going to be making friends and family as gifts- so far I’ve gotten a few varieties of Ficus pumila, Pilea depressa, several Fittonias, peperomias and Seneca rowleyanus. This is such a deep deep rabbit hole! Thanks as always for your content. And don’t you hate it when Orchids choose violence? 😂

@@MikeTytula love it! My first college roommate in (ahem, 1988) was huge into orchid breeding. He even has a species or cultivar at least, named after him! I just got two orchids from a local store myself. Let’s see if I can keep these 2 alive and blooming! And again thanks for info as always! Ultra-violence.

Hey Mike! I have been setting up my first vivarium with the filter foam and substratum method, and had some questions about planting into it. I recently planted a sonerila into my foam, and just cut out a hole of the filter foam and stuck the root ball in with some milled sphagnum. Do you have any tips for planting these longer root plants in the foam? The substrate mix you added in this video seems like it would make it easier, but you don’t seem to have a substrate mesh to keep it out of the foam. Does the heavy misting not push it all down and give you a sloppy mess fully of bacteria in the bottom of your tank? Thanks!
@MikeTytula5 ай бұрын
The filter foam itself should act as the screen filter. Of course you can definitely add a screen mesh overtop of it. Perhaps I will on the tank that I am building tonight on Livestream!
