I just did it for the first time today on my 14yr old Cat who was recently diagnosed w chronic kidney/pancreatitis. It's truly amazing how easy it is... this was a great video but noticed you didn't mention that the needle where there's the indent opening must always face up to allow fluid flow. This is as important knowing how to stick needle in. Depending on how fast you want the liquid to flow depends on the size of needle too... of course 18g would be faster since the opening is slightly larger then the 20g and Cats can use either or. I was given both sizes by my Vet to try. Just depends on the owner's preference. My Vet also said I can replace the line after 2 or 3 bag use. That it's completely fine. My cat was feeling so much better after administering the sub Q fluids. I truly enjoy all your wonderful videos on pet care. Thank you!

Lewis could care less haha. So calm. I just did this for the second time as per ER and vet instructions because my dog may have eaten raisins and already had kidney issues so we're playing it safe (been checking bloodwork levels too)! Now if I can only get better at replacing the needle. Careful not to prick your finger doing that! I'm shocked how relaxed my dog is when I do this. Was very nervous to try this but pet poison hotline and ER both been so kind about answering my zillion questions. It's not too hard. I turned music on and give him lots of praise and kisses.

I watch this video every time right before I administer my fluids for a confidence boost. Once I stick her with the needle everything is fine but she tries to bite me if I don't stick her just so. I get so nervous and don't want to hurt her...but I have realized that even if she doesn't understand and tries to bite me, it's going to save her life and that helps me be less nervous. Don't stop and think about it, just do it. My vet taught me the 'tent with 3 fingers technique' but I think your technique with thumb and forefinger is better. I use the thumb and forefinger and it DOES help distract from the needle stick. Thanks for your help!

Yes you can do this at home. Dog breeders do it all of the time. You can order I.V. fluids online, where I live it's sold at the feed stores. My vet showed me how to do it about 15 years ago. Not a big deal at all. Anyone can do it. You can also subQ pedialyte if you can't find the I.V. fluids. There's millions of things you can do at home that a vet will charge you a lot for. Dany Loubos, I think your vet wants you to think you can't do that. My vet showed me how to tube feed, subq my own vaccinations, give nasal tract... a lot of stuff that a caring vet would want to show a responsible pet owner.

The video is great because it teaches how easy this can be. As a registered nurse I only care for human patients but my dog is now sick with AKI and in need of fluids. My first feedback on the video gives you one big thumbs up for showing people that it is not difficult to give Subcutaneous fluids. The second feedback has to be a BIG thumbs down on the lack of sterile technique. Sterile technique is equally important when caring for pets and human patients. It is CRUCIAL to keep the spike that goes into the IV bag , sterile. Same applies to the end of the line. Also, A BIG NO NO, recapping a needle and reusing it.

@VeterinarySecrets7 жыл бұрын
Hi, NaCl is .9%, same concentration as blood, but nothing else added. LRS contains: sodium chloride, sodium lactate, potassium chloride, and calcium chloride in water. It is used for replacing fluids and electrolytes in those who have low blood volume or low blood pressure In practice we would almost always use LRS, as we are replace lost electrolytes and raising Blood Pressure. NaCl was used for situations where we didn't want to additional potassium ( ie Addisons). or where there was an existing metabolic acidosis ( as can be in diabetes(

When can you stop sub q fluids? Our 12 yr old dog has Cushings and diabetes. On May 2, 2022 she began vomiting so we rushed her to the vet. We found out she had a BUN of 48 and we were told to give 150 ml of fluids. We gave them every other day because the vet really offered no advice or guidance. Then we brought her to another vet on june 18, 2022. She was seen by another vet. To our shock her BUN had jumped up to 82 despite the fluids we had been giving her every other day. This ER vet said give her fluids twice a day. Unfortunately, she couldn’t tolerate the needle so we were doing good getting one treatment of 150 ml in every day. We were very concerned but were doing all we could had hoped for the best. Today we brought her in to see a third vet to get her kidneys rechecked and to our surprise her BUN was at 29. He said stop all fluids and bring her back in for a recheck in 3 months. Why would he want us to stop the fluids? One vet said every other day. Another vet said twice a day and the last vet said stop giving her any fluids. Why doesn’t he assume the fluids helped her get back down to 29? I’m hoping someone can explain it to me because while the fluids are very hard to give her I don’t want to see her BUN go back up again. I’m trying to understand what helped her number to go down.

I don't like 18 gauge needles unless you have to give fluids very fast. However, most dogs don't seem to mind. My dog decided to scream when it went in and made me jump and start shaking that I hurt him. I'm a nurse and people always say that I'm so gentle with injections, so it was awful to see my dog jump and hear him cry like that when he never cries. Am I doing something wrong? I switched to a 23 gauge needle but it just takes too long for the fluids to go on. He has kidney disease and won't eat or drink unless he has some fluids on board, which drops his creatinine level and makes him feel better. I'm going to try a 21 gauge needle tomorrow and go in a little more slowly to see if that helps.

But you are holding the spike without a sterile cap on the end and waving it around. We can’t do that with people because it contaminates the spike and then the fluid. Is it okay to wave around the spike without a protective cap like that before you spike the bag in pets? Serious question, as I never uncap a spike with humans until just before I spike bag and I make sure spike never touches anything else.
@SoMooLand1nine75 жыл бұрын

What about just using a syringe without the drip line to put the fluids directly under the skin? Is there a reason we need to use a drip line? I have just used a large syringe filled with ringers in the past, and that seems to work well also. Any reason not to do it this way? Thanks!

Both my dogs had parvo last june 2020 and i have two Chihuahuas and gavd them lactated ringerz 100 ml twice a day and Pectalin paste to stop diarrhea its a probiotic to help their digestive system cuz pavo just turns theid imsides to mush. Keep them hydrated on fluids get anti nauseous med from ur vet also and bout the 5th day they should start eating again and moving around better. I staydd with both of them 24/7. The first 72 hours are critical to keep them from diarrhea and vomiting. After 72 hrs if they made it they will likely recover for sure. My pups survived and day 7 they were back to causimg cahos lol. I hope ur pup did well and recovered. Good thing is once they get parvo they wont get again amd if so they prolly wont show symptoms becausd their body can fight it off now. But its a nasty disease. Vaccinate ur pets. U can do it urself as well they sell vaccines at Tractor supply.

@@Freya1412 well thats sad to here. My dog and his sister aslo got parvo a week later. June of 2020. From my experience the key is to keep them hydrated with subcutaneous fluids (lactated ringer) most vet will sell u a 1000 ml bag or jusg order on ebay. I have a bag kept always just incase. 20 gauge needle as well. Amd the next thing is stop them from having diarrhea which causes severe dehydration. For this u will want a probiotic paste. Called Pro Pectalin. Its a lifesaver. Give it to them every 8 hrs 100 ml of subcutaneous fluids twice a day. This was for my 10 pound Chihuahuas though. If u do home treatment its best to be by there side for the first 72 hours after symptoms show giving them treatment. The first 72 hours is the worst my vet said. If they survive after 72 hours their survival rate is really likely to recover. Both my dogs begin to show improvement on day 4 and day 5 they finally wanted to take food with boiled chiken breast and white rice. By day 7 both dogs were eating and drinkin on their own and wanting to play again. But both kf them fully recovered and both today are still enjoying life. Vet says once they have parvo, they will never get it again amd if so you might not even can tell cuz they're immune system can fight it off alot easier and may not even show signs.

I have 14 cats, I have had them for 5 years. One of them has kidney cancer and is fading fast. I feed most of them dry kibble. Should I soak the kibble first in water, and for how long? I feed so bad and guilty for my cat, Jake's condition. I always feel guilty when someone I love so much has died or is dying. I feel like I must have missed something, and did not do enough. Does that link provide everything I need to hydrate him at home? My vet wants to do this to him twice a week at $27.00 a visit. Can my cat be just as hydrated by giving him electrolyte liquid supplements in the mouth?

Hi Joe, 1. the canned food is far better- as for the cause of the kidney disease, we don't know. Yes you can learn how to properly give subcu fluids on my video, but your vet should also be willing to show you

Veterinary Secrets Thank you. I don't think they will show me, that would cut into their profits. I see from the link where I can get the bag, but do they sell the needles and the drip cords?

+Veterinary Secrets For dehydration, is there a general guideline of how much fluid per pound should be given? The sweet lab in the video receiving 100ml is (I'm guessing) 40lbs? So would it generally be 25ml per 10lbs? I know it can vary per vet instructions. I'm just curious if there's a general rule of thumb for weight. Thanks for making the video.

Hi my Pom's kidney's are starting to give her some issue. One kidney is doing fine the other has an elevated bun and creatine with a mild potassium elevation. She wants to do Sub-Q and a kidney diet. She hasn't mentioned how long she wanted to do the Sub-Q fluids tho. What do you suggest? Thanks :)

Hi, 1. More fluid add to dry kibble, or more canned food. 2. ALOH - it is a supplement that will bind phosphorus, which is the nutrient damaging the kidneys. 3. Avoid the low protein foods now- they are only for advanced renal failure
@michelleparvana84848 жыл бұрын
+Veterinary Secrets I tried googling Aloh can't seem to find it.

@karngariba98376 жыл бұрын
The situation is- he has cough, mucus from his nostrils, not eating food and very weak. The doctor has prescribed him a drip, mecopac forte(IM/IV) and Fenamol. The nurse supposed to visit home cancelled unplanned. And tomorrow is Sunday all the stores will be closed.

Dear mr Jones...I have read all you have written and seen your videos. And I love your info. I am so sorry to write to you...you probably have a lot on your hands helping people/with work etc. Still I am writing to see if you might be able to have minute. have a service dog and I can't tell you just how much I love her. She has severe Arthritis and the vets have told me to end her life (dont know the name in english...Im danish/live in Denmark). I do see that she hurt severely...I do want to try to give her a shoot...(oI mean yu dont just take someones life in you're a human???).... and want to hear if you have any idea if its okay to give her Anatabloc (I have used it my self for severe pain and chronic inflammation....and it helped me amazingly). The main ingredient is anatabine citrate. Is that by chance okay for dogs too? I dont have any vet to ask because the already think Im crazy for giving her what I do and I giv cup trying to reason with them. Am I wrong to think that her arthritis is inflammation? Is it true I can't reverse it? build up her bones again ? I give her everything you say and more - she gets on a daily basis: Msm, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, BioCell Collagen II , Hydrolyzed Collagen Type II, Chondroitin Sulfate, Hyaluronic Acid, Chondroitin Sulfate, astragalus, milk thistle, Reishi mushroom (she also have a weak liver), Multi vitamin B, d3 (in right portion for dogs), oils, chlorella, holy brazil extract, oregano extract, olive leaf ekstract, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, taurine, iron, N-Acetyl Cysteine, L-Tyrosine, homeopathic remedies. I have for twos weeks, since exrays, given her Rimadyl for pain (kills me to give her because its not good for the liver or health at all...but I dont want her in pain either). She walks very stiff and has a hard time getting up etc. BUT when I took her to the vet she could walk...they said its because that it was pushing on her nerve (I thought she had an sudden DM (but it wasn't). The exrays said her lower back and sacrum was almost "grown" together. I massage her every day and let her rest and after a few days she is walking again (still anon her daily walk but just what ever she feels like in the yard): I just started Cartrophen injections one week ago...and will continue on that....to see if it helps. She has been by my side for almost nine years, day and night and my hart is broken to see her suffer. I spend all my money on her even though I hardly have any and all my credit is almost ude up...but im I missing something? or should I just be paticent? Is what Im doing wrong should I give up(give in? sorry to write here, dont know if you feel like answering here. My mail is i.f.iversen@gmail.com if you feel better to write there ...if you at all have the time...I completely understand if you dont. i also give her turmeric extract pils, ginger tablets and probiotics...now i dont think i forgot anything :)
