I’m 25 and Being bored as a child (without a cell phone and barely a computer) always forced you to have an imagination and sparked creativity to go find something to do, and that just doesn’t happen for me anymore because I’ll go straight to my phone. Can anyone else relate?

24 and it's exactly the same for me. 600%. And now I've gotten scared that even if I give up my smartphone, even just for a bit at a time or all together, it might not help me get my creativity back. I feel like I'll always just be 'behind' now

I'm 25 too. I spent so much time as a kid outside, my tiny garden felt like it was acres wide. Everything was so enchanting and brand new everyday. Luckily my phone isn't attached to me anymore, it was as a teenager. But now I spend my time housekeeping, cleansing, making things, painting and a lot of time in my garden!

A cab app, a GPS enabled map app, an online payment app (google pay or something like that) and a portable hotspot bundled in a rugged flip phone .. that all I need to be it my daily driver but, such phones are not widely available. However, there are mobile OS like "kai OS" that pack these features.... so, there is a possibility but, again, the cost of those devices are expensive

It you cant completely give out your smartphone try this: - stop paying for 3G ( that way when your outside of your home you cant use your phone for much except calls and taking pictures) - when you are at home put your phone in a drawer when you don't need it - delete the most addictive apps and yes that includes youtube as well 😤 - forse yourself to not touch your phone for at least an hour after you wake up an an hour before bed - always log off of apps after your done using them (some apps like messenger don't have the log off option but if you go in your settings and clear the catche of the app it will automatically log you out)

Nothing angers me more than seeing a baby or a toddler with a phone planted in their face. How do parents not realise what an affect that has? When we watched tv as kids in the 90s, it was far away from us. No child ever sat directly in front of the tv for long, or we would have been told it's bad for our eyes. But yet now, babies have phones held up to their face and no one blinks an eye. It's terrifying and sad :( No one thinks about a child's brain, eyes, lack of imagination and development due to this.

I feel the same way I babysit for a couple of friends of mine and the one-year-old likes to watch was on my phone and I always hold it in arm’s-length away whenever she’s in my arms and I have something playing because I know it’s not good for my eyes to be so close to my phone let alone her little eyes.

You are so right. My sister-in-law's kids start their day and end their day with phones in their face. I try not to make a big deal about it but I can see the effect it has on them. They get fussy when it dies and throw tantrums, even if we have the exact same netflix show on television and now they "can't sleep" without it. Phones are temporary babysitters imo. It definitely makes me uncomfortable, but it's cemented the fact that my children will use a phone when they can pay for it themselves.

I'm 16 and I'm getting rid of my smartphone in 2021. Over lockdown I really realised how dependent I have become on social media and Ive decided I can't go on living on a screen for 6 hours + a day. Maybe I'll come back to this video at the end of next year and give an update :) UPDATE! Best decision I've ever made, since getting rid of my old phone I've been able to spend my time making art and music, met some amazing friends, and I got better grades than I could have imagined for my GCSEs in the summer. Also in general I just have more time to think and I feel a lot more at peace with life, and can prioritise what matters. Getting rid of my phone obviously hasn't solved everything but it has changed my life and I really urge anyone who is thinking of doing the same thing to do so. Honestly just stop watching youtube videos about phone addiction and do something about it yourself, you won´t regret it!! xx

I try to use my smartphone as little as I can. The other day, I had a conversation with my mom about "being bored." She said that her friend needed money to buy a tablet for her four year old because she got bored a lot. It really confused her when I told her that she needed to learn to be bored. Like, I will sit and just watch my chickens or cats or hell, the leaves falling from the trees but a four year old needs cartoons at ALL HOURS?!

Mind you, I don't even have the time for this, I am working full time. I am losing my sleep. It's hitting me how awful that is right now. I just did the math, and if this week reflected the rest of the year, I would have spent 42% of this year on my phone. It is definitely time for a change or break. Thank you for this post! When I visited my partner's family in upstate rural New York, I had NO service and I chose not to connect to his families wifi. I had the best week I've had in years because I was forming real bonds with him and his family, experiencing a new place, and enjoying myself. The only time I was on my phone was to take photos (I opted not to take my camera, otherwise I would have used it instead), check the weather, or read. I think my screen time was 30 minutes at most that whole week and it felt amazing, and I didn't miss a THING. I've also limited how often I am on social media and when I am "allowed" to use it and it's felt nice. Thank you for this video! I was thinking about your videos this morning and I take this (and the new moon!) as a sign that I should limit more.

It's so interesting to hear you describe having to do things in ways I just never stopped doing, even after having a smart phone -- paper shopping lists, keeping a written diary and planner, reading novels, being bored, listening to CDs, sitting in silence. I don't really think about this stuff a lot but it's always really interesting to me to hear that other people just don't do those things! I'm definitely older than you, and smart phones came into my life at a later time, so I'm not sure if that's part of why the relationship to the smart phone is just so different. This was a really interesting video!

A lot of the things we use smartphones for are optional. The device itself isn't bad - it's the way we use them. You don't have to justify having one or give it up to take steps to adjust the way you use it or rely on a smartphone. If it helps you to switch to a different type of mobile phone, do it. If not, don't. Everyone is different and we have different needs!

I support this SO much! I mean I personally am really into this "stop scrolling, eliminate the tech/social negativity" movement, but what's most important is that you found this and did it in the way that is so positive for you!! I keep hearing about people doing this brick phone route, and I admire that so much! I think there are so many people who should try this and whom it could really really help! For anyone who's confused and torn about this whole thing: I'm actually in the "still have a smartphone, but not social media" camp - I find the planner, camera, music, audiobook and texting functions to be positive things I don't feel the need to give up, but I'm pretty close to just deleting all my social media. You don't have to completely go brick phone if it will create more stress for you than good, BUT you HAVE to be honest about 1) how much time you're spending "scrolling" 2) whether it's positive or negative for you to have a smartphone at all and/or use certain apps. I know many many people who it's a self control issue where, they can't just delete their social media apps or whatever, if they have a smartphone, they'll just get them back. In that case you should 100% use Harmony's guidance and try the brick phone route. But just because I never liked social media and I don't personally feel the need to use it all the time, I'm not ditching my smartphone, because i use it more as a device, and that's a route you can take if it's positive for you! I personally find texting to be positive because my friends I text with are a source of joy, but someone else might find texting to be addictive, negative, and contact with people who bring them down - you have to do what's best for YOU. I really support anyone who wants to give up their smartphone, but just wanted to mention it's not the only choice between cold turkey and staying a slave to it :) If you're very honest with yourself, you can keep the elements that are not coping mechanisms/distractions.

I think we're forgetting a large group of people. First there's the group of people who literally rely on their phone to be all these things bc purchasing a second hand smart phone for $200 is much cheaper than purchasing all those things separately (not to mention the amount of trees being saved with digital note taking). Second is the group of people whose only internet connection is through their smart phone bc of the high cost of internet service in some areas, or they live in their car or an RV or somewhere else that doesn't have an internet connection. Then there's the group of people who live in areas that lack certain support systems / communities like LGBTQ+ communities, disable communities and minority communities and those without these support systems irl rely on their connections via social media to their communities. We forget that sometimes what we think is a privilege is actually a necessity for a lot of people. Speaking as someone who went without a phone (smart of other wise lol) and without home internet for almost 7 years it really was a life changer when I finally got one.

@@Bildlichunbekannt it’s like people pay for texts and calls with a provider for no reason? We don’t need all these apps all the time

I just recently left WhatsApp and Instagram. Initially, that was one of my main thoughts too, but I sent out a message to my contacts saying I'll be available through text, or email, or even video call (Zoom, Duo, etc) and I have started to mainly focus on having in personal relationships. People who care about you or want to meet with you in real life WILL make the effort to text, call, or even email. I have had three in-person meetings with people I hadn't seen in months (its been a week and a half since I deleted it all) because social media creates such a false sense of closeness, in each meet up we spoke for 2 hours straight, just catching up on life. I realized how much I missed out on, how pressured social media makes you feel to look one way but secretly you're lonely, etc. Don't let that hold you back. My struggles with contentment, comparison, and even trust issues have decreased immensely since getting rid of those apps, my relationship feels more secure than ever, because I'm not constantly comparing, my thoughts don't taunt me the way they used to, and I have gotten to do numerous DIY projects in place of waiting around for texts, or posting or scrolling through media endlessly. It's possible and it is truly life-giving. Give it a try!

I was born in the 80s so I've seen how phones have evolved. Life was so much better before phones took over , I've seen society change for the worst. The fact that people need to question if they can live without their smartphone is probably the scariest part. Life will continue with or without smartphones. We just have to take back control 😊

As someone who went years without a phone back in 2016-2018, I can honestly say it was the easiest and most enjoyable time of my life - aside from the process of overcoming my depression and anxiety during that time, it made it easier for me to do so . And even now I have a phone mainly for work purposes and I still find myself forgetting to grab my phone when I leave the house. I think it's important to develop that disconnect between us and tech, severing that attachment .

On a much smaller scale, the things I have done to reduce my smart phone usage are to deactivate my social media, I use a book planner with actual pen and paper, I keep my phone in my purse instead of my pocket (harder to get to), I keep a rubik's cube in my purse as well... when I get the urge to scroll, I fiddle instead. So much we can do to get on our own way 🖤

Now I watch netflix or youtube on my computer when I'm at home instead of scrolling through social media every time that I'm slightly bored. I feel a lot happier and days actually feel longer. Great video, Harmony! For many teenagers a life without smartphone feels impossible so thank you for spreading this very important message!

I definitely think people should have 'no screen' weeks to bring things into perspective every now and then. I delete all my social media for 1-4 weeks every now and then and than helps a lot in resetting my relationships with apps once they start to become toxic again (by design). I'm attached to Instagram way less, I don't have the hardest time not using Twitter. The only app I'm still on a lot is KZbin. Which is definitely something I'm trying to work on since it does eat up your time no matter how much the content is educational or entertaining.

try to unsub from people that produce boring, brain-numbing garbage. i.e "I SPENT 6000.00 ON {x} CLOTHES!!!" or "BIG HAUL!!!" a lot of youtubers just flaunt how much money they have, and in turn, makes the viewer feel like shit for not being able to spend as much as them. it's all subtle programming. i recommend unsubbing from people that make you feel anxious/doubt yourself- I'm sure you probably have a few that make you feel inferior. into the garbage they go :)

you don't need smartphones to do all the things, but it is great to have ONE device that does all the things instead of becoming addicted/dependent on multiple. Smartphones and their negative effects can be overcome with willpower and boundaries. Put it away when spending time with family, close it in the glove compartment when driving, charge it in another room overnight, have a no phones at the table rule. You need to disconnect and enjoy life, you can do it while owning a phone though!

Absolutely! That level of willpower is incredibly hard for a ton of people (we all have the i airy chemicals we chemicals we crave) so thankfully we have techniques and success stories like Harmony’s guiding us :) But totally, willpower is ~1/2 of the work, with the other half being designing your environment to work for you (which or course requires some willpower)

I want to do this so bad. I have adhd I'm completely aware of the fact that I have a smartphone/social media addiction. On one hand it helps me to do simple tasks because it's easier for me to do the dishes or brush my teeth with a video playing. But on the other hand I don't read anymore, I can't even concentrate on most video games and I used to love writing but didn't write anything the past years. I hyperfocus very rarely since using a smartphone. It is an aid of some sort but also something that makes my life so much worse. I feel like it would be easier to give up my phone if I wasn't living in the city (had to move here for job) and could go back to a more rural area again. Idk. Giving up my smartphone is definitely the goal but my adhd and my current living situation are making this really hard. But this video inspired me and I think I'm gonna delete some apps and try to put my phone away when I don't need it.

When you mentioned that the girl who inspired you to do this, you called her "cool". This is how I felt when I also met a girl with a normal cellphone. She just had it so casually, like it was the early 2000s, naturally. I thought she was so interesting and cool. We really need to connect more with earth and be free. That's what makes us cool. Seeing a girl with a smartphone isn't "cool".

When I made the "life change" of going vegetarian I made sure to give myself time to work through all the foods and experiences I would miss when I gave up meat and "say goodbye" to those things which helped SO much with that transition because there were fewer surprises and I wasn't tempted to give up and go back to old habits. I'd recommend that to anyone who wants to try giving up their phone as well! @@Hannah-nh5qj I think we're forgetting a large group of people.

Hi Harmony! I have also a few months ago stopped using social medias, makeup and thinking about switching my phone. it's so nice to see someone talk about these stuff specially about social media and makeup. when I stopped using makeup not many people reacted but when I said that I had no social media on my phone people reacted very weirdly. I used to use an app called snap where you can have streaks with people. But these people did not actually talk to me but send a black picture with the text ''Streaks'', when I said that I was not feeling well and wanted to remove all social media people only cared about their ''streaks''. or followers. After all these bad reactions I have gotten I have realized that these people are kinda stuck in this world called ''social media''. People can't even sit and have a dinner with me without taking out their phones and going around on social media. Well anyway it's feels good to not be alone with this. Keep up with the amazing videos, and don't stress too much! c:

It took all of 2 minutes for the tears to start. think I’m gonna make this a part of my daily practice. 👍🏻😌👌🏻thanks, Harmony✨

Odd yet perfect this came up because I've been highly considering doing this and have recently been saying it out loud and this is the first time I'm seeing someone else do it!

Thank you so much for talking about this!! I feel like I needed to hear this. Ever since the pandemic some of my coping mechanisms have not been working for me and I’ve been spending a lot more time just in my head. It is nice to have your point of view with coping so that I can understand mine a bit more. Love you dyslexic buddy!! :)

That’s easy with everything you were able to do but if you have toxic people around you in your own house and you need to cope up with their projections and nonsense all day long? Your phone is your saviour just plug in earphones and you don’t listen to their siht talk 💛

hi! I've been thinking about giving up my phone too, and just get away from technology and negative stereo types on the internet. I think it will be nice to appreciate more nature and other small things. you looks so happy and healthy. blessed be!

Very inspiring to see a KZbinr do this! Thank you for this video. I have spent the last 11 years on/off smartphones and one thing that I realised is that when I use a smartphone, I trust myself less. Like I already looked up the event that I'll attend tomorrow 5 times but I still don't trust myself to remember the time and place, so I look again. Whereas when I leave my phone at home, I have to do all the thinking and planning myself and in advance, which is actually empowering, lol.

If you get into the topic more you'll learn how it's affecting people of a younger generation in your life.. it's a huge problem, I'm 22 and have been addicted to my smartphone as a way of burying emotions for almost 10 years. And I grew up on the countryside surrounded by nature and very educated individuals and even tho I would consider myself to be pretty selfreflected I've always been in a state of denial of how addicted I am and how much this is controlling my life and even now after realizing it I find it almost impossible to leave those behavioural patterns that I've been stuck in for all this time. It's like she said in the video... Ive unlearned boredom, but I've also unlearned to learn, to teach myself how to do something, can't concentrate for very long, constantly searching for distratcion and being bombarded by thoughts and cravings related to my social media use. Realizing what it does to my generation and even worse the people being born after 2010 and to the world in general is SO. SCARY.

I can’t get rid of my phone because we literally just started the contract (it’s brand new) but before I got it I asked my mom if I could just have a flip phone or something and she just flat out said it was a bad idea and it just wouldn’t work. She was partially right for my circumstances, it would be harder to communicate with some of my friends and I have a lot of apps I need cause I can’t remember things and plan ahead. So I decided one day on a whim to just delete all the games and social media that I was addicted to and had unhealthy relationships with. It’s not ideal but I went from 8 hrs of screen time to 3 so I’m really proud of myself! The problem I’m having now is finding other things to do that I find enjoyable. I have depression and everything I do isn’t fun and everything just seems unfulfilling. I don’t know where to go from here because even reading, painting, hiking etc. aren’t enough for me anymore. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do?

What scared me the most was when I saw how my older sister (millennial) and my parents can easily have fun banter and chit chat with people that work in shops and actually become acquainted with them. Never had that so far in my life, being 20 years old now I can start making that change.

I don't know if you still look at your KZbin comments but... This video has been in my "watch later" since it's out... It took me a long time to be ready to listen I guess. Right now I'm in a point in my life where I feel like I lost myself a bit, after a lot of hard times. I think I'm beginning to go back on track and this video touched me in the heart. So thank you for sharing your journey. I followed you for so long and it's so beautiful to have seen you evolve and be so honest. Thank you and... I guess I'm gonna change some stuff up in my relationship with my phone now 😂
