Ive lost so many friends over the years that were once sincere and meaningful. Slowly they transformed from active members of my life down into artificial clicks and interractions between avatars. No matter how much I reached and pulled, I could no longer get conversations and in person meetings from anyone, but they are always all eager to like, comment & send someone elses curated content. Couldn’t take it anymore and deleted and cut everything and everyone off. Done waiting around for people who are lost in the sauce.

I have one/two friends left, I see them if I'm lucky three hours on friday night. Then they talk about stuff they talked about in their watsap (sorry, a language joke) groups. Last week I checked my incoming calls so far this year: not ONE was a casual one, a friend or a relative just calling to check on me or to have casual conversation. And I wonder how people fall in love these days - when you go out, you can sit four hours in a bar like you're a ghost. Maybe I am one.

These days, if I'd like to meet up with someone, I tell them where I am going and when, and I invite them to join me. Then I forget about it. I make my plans and carry them through alone. If that person shows up, then I switch gears and enjoy that. I never have to wait for an answer, or deal with multiple redirects, or any of that. II don't end up having my invitation to them switched around to where they are inviting me! t also tells you pretty quickly where you fall within their priorities, say 1 through 10. How much focus etc has been destroyed among people because of smartphones. I look around now and there's too many people glued to them, not looking around or where they are going. I'm at a few forums though, mostly to nerd out on my hobbies, but that's way different from actual social media. Social media is just a waste of time, wasting time to show off how wonderful you are. I know no one gives a crap about me, so I know that there's no point in showing off on social media. I'm all on my own, and so are most people... but most people decide it's something bad and so they don't want to live with that fact and need to escape it.

I often wonder if that's what I'm doing, but certainly try not to. I appreciate what I learn on this platform, but it's just as easily a way for me to take in content with which I already agree, only further convincing me I'm in the right. It's exhausting. At least we have some awareness, but it's hard to know where to balance it. I know I'm being surveilled too, and anytime I use the feed I'm being manipulated subtly. But I still come back for more🤦♂️

I cut off all social media except KZbin and Google and I dislike facebook and Twitter since I lost jobs and friends in the past because of it

It’s been nice being off the main social medias (twitter, facebook, instagram, snapchat, etc) since 2017. I’m very lucky to have never even had TikTok, seeing how addicted everyone is to that, and the only ‘social medias’ I use are KZbin, Discord, and Reddit. Reddit is definitely the worst as far as time sucking/attention grabbing and I want to make a point to stop using it completely. I did set a timer for myself on my phone to limit it to 1 hour for reddit (because as you said there’s no such thing as a quick scroll haha) so that is helping but eventually i’ll bring it down to none. The camping part is so true. My problem is it takes me 1-2 days out of service to get out of the headspace of “did I get new views on this video?/did my friend respond?/etc” before I can get in that groove of slow moving and slow thinking. Thanks for another great video David, loved the Harry Potter edit by the way 😂

Thank you for the video. I stopped using most social media some years ago and looking back I didn’t lose anything. I think there is just little value in it to be found. As far as reaching out to people, few actually make calls with their phones.

My FB was hacked two years ago and I miss complete strangers I will likely never speak to again, because I can't recall their name. I still have some life long friends I talk to regularly that I hope stick around.

This is an important message in your video. I also struggled with social media in terms of creativity and productivity. I see it everywhere: People get lost in the internet and they suffer from it in every aspect of human life. It's time we leave the media behind and learn to focus on the social again like we did before we opened this energy consuming portal to depression, emptieness and anxiety

New subscriber love your work. The best thing i discovered on my phone was do not disturb mode, its on most of the time now. I have had the same close friends for 30 odd years so I am lucky and we are all slack at connecting with each other cos we are busy doing our thing. They have known me as the crazy bike and guitar guy who is not very peopley since our teens and are cool with that. I get on KZbin of an evening instead of watching tv or movies so i can choose what i want to learn. You are spot with your observations on the socials and phones in general. As i live out bush with three of my kids and don't get to town much I get on the social media of an evening on the weekend a bit like going to the pub is for some people, fire a few messages back and forth catch up then split but yeah if that happens in the morning the day is shot and no body i know is online to even interact with, just be mindlessly scrolling.

Yes, the "maybe tomorrow", "let me confirm with you", "sorry, I have to cancel last minute" culture. Holy fuck.... I hate the waiting time that texting creates because not only do you wait for the text.. You wait for the confirmation... And this creates anxiety. Because waiting creates a space where an answer is missing.. And you can just wait... What??? I think am not gonna participate.
