It is the right choice to go with the 4l80 with that supercharger. That is great info on the parts needed. I've done the transmission upgrade on a procharged 5.3 2wd 2004 Seirra. I got help with parts, but the wiring and tune were the issue. Worked out well eventually, and I've had a ton of "fun" with the truck as a daily driver for years. Honestly can't believe the transmission held up for over 100k but that is how good it is. Thanks LT!!

The front drive shaft from a 02-10 duramax or 8.1/Alison truck will work for your swap. Part number 15182094. The length was perfect on my 4l80e swap, and it's smaller diameter gives you the shifter cable/linkage clearance you need with the wider 80e trans.

The problem with the earlier model 4l80s was that the oil passages delivered cool fluid the front of the tranny and not the mid band areas that caused a lot of burn ups and heat was the #1 killer. With as much HP as you have and the high stall torque converter that 4l80 will 100% burn up. Unless you come up with some serious cooling systems. You should get another heat exchanger and mount it parallel to the ground under the truck behind the transfer case with a shroud to scoop air up to it. Stay away from those in line heat syncs they don't actually do much at all. I promise you you should swap it out with a 2002 and on for cooling capabilities and probably still add the second heat exchanger. And you will need better clutches bands and servos for that much HP. It will blow.

(I have one of those as well.) From what I have read - a 2500HD front driveshaft should be a direct bolt in. I really want a RCSB 4WD truck, but the planets never seem to align... I might have missed it but what stall converter did you use in this truck? I put a reman 4l60e in my truck about a year ago but I know it’s only a matter of time before it goes out again. When it does I’m going to do the 80 swap because I plan to do a single turbo kit at some point but don’t want to grenade my 60e that’s in it right now. My truck is a 03’ 4.8 reg cab long bed. I need the long bed but short bed is the way to go if you can find a clean one like yours that’s not ragged out. You should do a similar 4.8 build but with a turbo. I’d like to see the difference if there is much. I know you have the 8.1 truck but 4.8 is a lot more common for people. I’m a Ford guy but the GMT800 platform is one of the best trucks ever made in my opinion. I never understood why people liked them until I got mine. Bought it with 97k miles on it for $3500 in 2019. Only a few small door dings. Just hit 151k.

I've not seen the non-aluminum extension housing first hand, but that one looks like its about a 1/2" taller (as it sits on the table - really it's just "longer" in situ) than the aluminum one! If so, that might help you - I had to cut 5/8" off of the 4L80 output shaft when I did the 4L80 conversion in my SS. The 4L60 output shaft is flush with the end of the extension housing, whereas every 4x4 4L80 I've seen sticks out that 5/8" from the extension housing. that stick out prevents the transfer case from bolting up. Looking for to see how you deal with that! Love the content, LT!
@LawrenceTolman2 жыл бұрын
I did mock it up and notice that the 80e output shaft sticks out longer like you mentioned, which is why I bought the 2nd extension housing thinking there were two different lengths. Both actually measure within about 0.010" from one another, so my plan was to just trim the output shaft. The only three output shafts I could find for an 80e are the 2wd, 4wd, and the P30 chassis one for the parking brake drum, but I bet the later model 4wd 80e must use a slightly shorter output than early

So what about the torque converter? I have an LS swapped 1999 2 door Tahoe, and I used the old 4l60e that was behind the 5.7 vortec, and I had to use a crank spacer. Since you are using an older style 80e, do you have to run a spacer to put it behind an LS motor? Or is it just a custom built converter that mates the LS to the older 80e? I plan on doing the 80e swap very soon, and I was thinking about using the older style since it’s so much cheaper. But I don’t want to use the crank spacer any more. I just don’t like having that in there. But the LS has a shorter crank then the big block or 5.7 that the older 80e come behind from the factory. Just wondering what you are doing to fix that.

Disappointing you didn't keep 4L60E and up grade with Sonnax parts, would be more than adequate for any HP you will ever see and the big downside to 4L80E is it spins entire rotating components at Overdrive speed unlike 4L60E which gives longer trans life and uses less HP, Sonnax parts ate exceptionally well designed including front half billet dual clutch convertor upgrade, and your going backwards with a front lube 4L80E??? and to top it off your reducing the 32 spline shaft to 27 spline to fit transfer and your worried about 4L60E strength???? What are you doing for crankshaft spacer to 4L80E?

They do have some great parts for the 4l60 for sure. Also, I’m upgrading the transfer case input, not downsizing the transmission output.

I have a 4l80 in my truck it's great lost power but obously your not going to have that problem

yup, the 4l80 will for sure absorb a little more power than the 4l60 does

The best way to build a 4l60e is to swap in a 4l80e
