I am pretty grateful I found your video doing this type of comparison. I am traveling overseas soon to visit family and was going to bring my Sony A6000 and a couple lenses(wide and 35mm). I also just picked up a Pixel 6 non-pro and it has all the same lenses except the zoom and performance is pretty close between the two. I think I am just going to bring my phone along. I'll mostly be taking pics of family and landscape stuff. I don't think it is worth toting along the Sony for this occasion. My usage is mostly just walking and doing basic "point and shoot". Your video really helped my decision because I want to travel light this time.

The odd thing is that you might be misinterpreting contrast for detail. I think the Sony has more detail, just less contrast. I think the Sony looks better, though, because all the lighting in it is proportional. On the Pixel, due to hdr bracketing, lighting proportions are out of whack and that out of whackness gets backed into the image which makes it appear artificial and fake looking. So I actually prefer the a6500 images. Take those raws and then use lightroom to lift shadows if you want. That's the better approach imo.

I also use both a camera and a phone and they certainly have environments where each excels at. Personally I would always use my phone when it comes to family outings or where there are people in the photos I need to focus on because it's much more convenient and I can share those photos in pretty much in an instant. On the other hand, environmental photography, I would most certainly always use my camera.

Good video, but I feel that this comparison is slightly flawed and misleading. The whole point of using a mirrorless body camera with a separate lens is the control you can have over the photo/camera. Most people would shoot in manual if not aperture priority or shutter priority. The Sony has an internal stabilizer and so does the lens, in the environments you were in, shooting at ISO 4000 is ridiculous. A comparison with equal shutter speed, equivalent aperture, and then auto ISO would have been nice to see; and I suspect you would see the sony take the lead under such conditons.
@thatsginter2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. 👍 Anytime I prefer quality, I still go for my mirrorless. I did state that this was an Auto vs Auto comparison though. Mainly for those quick snap situations and to see how the cameras process things for the casual shooter. I'm definitely a set it up on a tripod, add lights, lock that ISO low, manually focus, and process the RAW myself kind of guy when I have the time or desire to do so. 😁

I can't believe the a6500 in auto mode at 12mm chooses to shot at 1/160 sec. 🤨With my x-t100, with only the optical stabilization of the XF 10-24, I can easily shoot handheld at 1/15 sec. (without camera shake effect)...probably with the Sony in that configuration even at 1/10 (4 stops difference !!).

@nikolaoslamprou92662 жыл бұрын
I disagree politely with the comparison. I just saw the indoor shooting part (skipped the rest). First, pixel uses a fixed lower f stop value (2.2 ?) Over your lenses which is 4(?). That is a big deal! A fair comparison would be a lens of that aperture. Because 2.2 causes bokeh (although sharpness) pixel uses focus stacking. Another disadvantage compares to Sony (even if you use a lense of that aperture). So, because I said too much, a fair comparison would be:1) Same aperture and 2) focus stacking for Sony. Fundamentally speaking (is physics after all) the Sony should outperform the pixel. Thumbs up for pixel for usability with very good results (I want to be fair) but thumbs up for an SLR (MFT, APCs etc) for a fully-fledged image (with editing or in some cases, for example, Lumix cameras there is a lot of integrated software in the camera there that saves some time).
@thatsginter2 жыл бұрын
You are right, it's not exactly the same. Sony would destroy the Pixel (any small sensor smarthphone) if it was using the same settings/aperture and also had a computational image stacking algorithm helping out lol. I really just wanted to see Auto vs. Auto with the same focal lengths for those quick photo opportunities or for people who don't want to spend time adding lights, shooting in manual, or even processing the RAW files themselves. Personally, I like doing the latter, but many times with the family stuff, it's not an option. I'm happy to see how smartphones have progressed, but I'm still carrying my Sony with me almost everywhere lol.

@@thatsginter I agree, in auto pixel does wonders. In contrast, everytime I tried to shoot in auto with my camera (jpg or not) something goes wrong. Wrong ISO, out of focus etc etc. I don't know but Google engineerings did wonders on that.

@@thatsginter this is exactly it. For regular outings that photography isn't your main focus then your phone is fine. I used my Pixel 6 to shoot video of fireworks on the 4th and thought it looked great in 4k but I also brought my a6300 with the Tamron 70-300mm lens shooting at 70mm in 4k. Here is the a6300 video I shot using the Tamron lens at the beginning, followed by the Sigma 16mm to frame all the fireworks and ending with the Tamron again for the finale. I set the Sony to autofocus and used the Rode VideoMicro for audio. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpeweWpneJtpl7s I thought the Pixel 6 would be good enough but wow was I wrong. The footage from the Sony was astounding, helped by the fact that I had it on a tripod and zoomed in so close to the fireworks. If I had the Pixel 6 Pro it would have been interesting to see them side by side using the telephoto lens. With the a6300, I had the iso set to 100. The Pixel's iso was variable so that didn't help isolate the fireworks. I could have manually set this in FilmicPro but I'll leave that for another day. Even though the footage was cropped dramatically more than the Pixel 6, the level of detail was amazing and gave a unique perspective on fireworks instead of the thousands of videos you see using smartphones. Then again, as a professional photographer you will know the best way to frame a shot, correct in post, etc. which to me is half the fun and well worth the time and energy.

Totally. I intended to import the jpegs (they were selected for import), but the raws were in the same folder and Lightroom was "smart" enough to grab those. The jpegs do actually look better in the noise department tho. But since the raws aren't processed, the pixel still had "cleaner" images sooc due to the image stacking noise reduction happening automagically.

@@thatsginter Cuz DSLR nowadays do have stacking image processing too, and noise reduction is a truly huge differences between raw and jpeg.
