This is a video of my son Christian and I backpacking the 53 mile 'Northern Loop' at Glacier National Park in August 2013.
This is a long video - 1+ hour. I normally try to keep these videos 'short-and-sweet' (~15 minutes) but given the constantly spectacular scenery at Glacier I just couldn't cut this one back that much - sorry!
For those not wanting to watch the complete video there is a ~7 minute photo compilation at the end (with music) that will give you the essence of the trip.

Thanks David for doing this video, I could step into a time machine for an hour. In 1965, I was part of the trail crew that rebuilt and maintained the Highline Trail from Logan Pass to beyond fifty mountain. We lived in the small cabin at Granite Park all summer. Glacier Park is timeless, the trail looks the same now as it did then.

I hope someday your son truly appreciates where he was afforded to go with his enthusiastic father. What a gift you have given him. As a young woman I was given the opportunity to hike to Iceberg Lake and within view of the tunnel but a grizzly sent us back down the trail. I never made it back to that particular place but it’s imbedded in my heart.

Love Glacier National Park! I dragged my husband there in July of 2013 and he described it as epic! We bounced around the park doing day hikes until my husband developed huge blisters! Then we did a horseback ride, and drove out to the Moise Buffalo range. He has since learned wool socks are for hiking! Love being able to see the portions of the park we couldn't get to as day hikers, feeling inspired to get in shape to do backpacking! It was an awesome trip and as soon as our "Glacier Gift" is old or obedient enough we plan to return! Seeing the Swiftcurrent Inn there at the end brings back memories! Thank-you for sharing your adventures and look forward to seeing more!

Just watched your North Fork - Goat Haunt video and could not stop smiling! My son and I hiked Kintla Lake to Boulder Pass last month. We swung over to Hole in the Wall for a peek, then turned around and camped at Upper Kintla for two nights. In our five-day hike, we experienced the same things you did - chest high thimbleberries, blazing heat one day, cloudy and cold the next, thunderstorms, hail, rain, skeeters, flies - all those things that make the wilderness experience so real! Oh, and the scenery was incredible, too! Cannot wait to apply for another permit next summer. Many thanks for sharing your videos, David. They really hit home for me!

The final 3 minutes of this exceptional piece captures, better than anything I've seen in hundreds of hours of backpacking-related video viewing, why I've spent as much of the last 50 years as I could in the backcountry. Bravo, David.

hey dave, my son is in a bad place in life at the moment, bad choices, health etc. Really great to see you taking yours on a trip like this. A bit envious :) and at the same time, most of all, happy for you. I know saying "be grateful" can carry little weight from a stranger, but I never knew what it meant until now. You are giving him a great gift on these trips, and his enthusiasm shows he appreciates it.

Ahh... sort of where it all began for me too, at least with the 'big' trips. I plan to re-do this video as part of the #TBT videos, but I'm also sort of hoping to re-do this entire trip. As I have done for the last few years, I always include this 'Great Northern Loop' hike as part of my Glacier permit requests. It's a tough one to get, and it makes me appreciate how incredibly fortunate we were that first year I applied for a permit, but perhaps 2021 is the year I get to do a 'do-over'!

Liked the video a lot. LOVED the John Denver songs at the end! John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High" was a major influence on my becoming a hiker/backpacker. He had a special ability to capture, through his voice and lyrics, the soul of the outdoors. David Gray: I love your goofy laugh and the giddy excitement you exhibit in the beautiful outdoors--it is very similar to how I feel. Keep making your videos, sir. There are many who appreciate them!

David - I really enjoyed your video. You did a fabulous job narrating it and bringing it home for those that could not be there. I hiked this loop in the opposite direction 1-6 September 2013, so I was right behind you. I did not video my trip, but I took about million pictures, it is so true, the beauty abounds. I stayed at the following campsites: - Ft Lake Elizabeth - Mokowanis Lake - Kootenai Lake - Fifty Mountain (I was actually in the same campsite as you) - Granite Park Chalet Thanks for bringing back all those wonderful memories, especially the dinner social hour and the thrill I had when I received my approved wilderness permit. I too got my first choice and I was so very excited. Also I’m doing a loop in RMNP this year and your video has inspired me to video my adventure. Thanks again for sharing your adventure.

We even had the same deer at granite park running off with our camping gear.. I was disappointed you guys didn't make the climb up to the sue lake overlook at fifty mountain, it was a must see.
@davidgrayin
@davidgrayin 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, missing out on the Sue Lake overlook was a huge mistake, and regret. Poor advance research on my part - I just didn't know. Christian and I just returned from another backpacking trip to Glacier and that is one of the things that we discussed. Christian reminded me that he wanted to head up to the overlook and I poo-poo'd the idea, probably largely because at the time I was having a 'near' coronary and heat stroke from the 2000 foot climb to the saddle where the overlook trail starts (OK, not really, but I was pretty whipped at that point and just wanted to get to Fifty Mountain CG, which is finally within site at that spot). Note to anyone in that same situation - do the Sue Lake overlook! - you might only get one opportunity.

Excellent video of your hike, thank you for sharing it. One thing notably absent from your video: glaciers. I lived in Montana for a few years when I was a kid back in the early 60s. We visited the park in August too and there were glaciers where now there are none. So sad, so very sad. Glacier's trails may be considered "backcountry" but it is not remote, too many hikers for my liking. Before I get too much older, I'd love to do some remote camping, someplace where you can truly be alone in the wilderness for the sake of real solitude and spiritual renewal.

You're very welcome, and congratulations on the Glacier permit! The North Fork area is really special, and one of the most beautiful areas in all of Glacier. I think you'll be blown away by the entire area between Brown Pass to beyond Boulder Pass. Great video blogs David. I see you haven't misplaced your aquamira! Christian carries his own bear spray leaving you in the dust like that! I'd give my eye-teeth to be 25 again.... or at least with that energy you folks have. Thanks for such a great share.
@davidgrayin
@davidgrayin 8 жыл бұрын
+Gary Bowen Yes, I'd sure like to be that young again and have Christian's energy. We'd done some Colorado trips with long, multi-hour, steep climbs previously but the 2013 Glacier trip was my first encounter with hitting them on a daily basis. I learned that they are manageable but that Christian and I simply have different 'gears' - his gears are much larger! I hit the climb and immediately put it in 'granny gear' for the duration - Christian moves ahead at his own pace and we join up again at the top. Much more pleasant experience for both of us.No aquamira issues on this trip, or water problems at all. Water was abundant and the quality was excellent. In fact, this was the first trip where I developed the technique of only carrying one liter - I had previously carried more 'just in case' - but we became comfortable enough with the water situation that the routine was fill one liter between water sources, drink what was left when you got to the next one, refill, drop in the aquamira, and start drinking new liter after 15 minutes or so - worked out great.And yes, only one can of bear spray on the 2013 trip. If you watch the 2014 video you'll noticed we corrected that the following year. The bear spray was a first for us on this trip and we purchased it in Whitefish just prior to starting the hike. Frankly, I got a little 'sticker shock' when I saw it was $50+ for something we'd likely never use, and my thought was that we would be together and I'd just keep Christian in front :-) (Only kidding on that... sort of!). But it didn't turn out that way - we were separated often - and I found myself in a few prime grizzly habitat spots where I was feeling more than a bit 'vulnerable'. As we also learned from sitting with an ex-ranger grizzly expert at Fifty Mountain, the bear spray is far from a perfect deterrent (especially in the hands of someone who hasn't practiced with it), but at least it's something. We both had bear spray in 2014, and always kept it ready for quick deployment.

+David Gray Check! I'm watching NPS researchers studying effects of glacier retreats in GNP (I'm a natural history nerd/buff) and they are all carrying bear spray on their pack belts. John Denver is a great touch at the end of your vids.

Very nice video of Glacier National Park. The heavy breathing tells what the camera cannot. Maybe it was just the filmography, but son Christian seemed distant - like he didn't want to be there and he wanted to make sure that dad knew it. If that was true, he will eventually mature and realize what an adventure his father brought him on. Hopefully he figures it out sooner than later.
@davidgrayin
@davidgrayin 10 жыл бұрын
Christian is a little quiet, especially when I'm filming him, but I'm confident he enjoyed the experience and wanted to be there. In fact, we did Glacier again in 2014 largely at Christian's insistence. And though I will gladly accept any opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with him, based on my own experience as a 19 year old, I agree that in time the trip(s) will mean much more to him than they may today.

Nicely shot, and seemingly a fun time. I'm a little envious insofar as I've "only" backpacked in the east. I like the prospect in Glacier of the communal mess area. Did you see any camps that a hammock would NOT work for?
@davidgrayin
@davidgrayin 9 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Bruce. I'm from Indiana and have backpacked and camped in the midwest and east - great times, and great scenary. But there is nothing like the Rockies - low humidity, amazing blue skies, incredible mountains. I know it's a long way to get there from the east coast but if you ever get the opportunity, it's a different experience that I'm sure you would find worth it. Regarding the hammock possibilities, I'd never given it much thought but in the two trips I've made I don't recall seeing anyone using a hammock (strange, because they are very common in the midwest). For the campsites we stayed at: (1) Granite Park - probably not a problem in most of the 4 sites, (2) Fifty Mountain - same, probably not a problem in any site, (3) Stoney Indian - it would have been tough to hang a hammock in the site we had, only small brushy trees, (4) Elizabeth Lake - not a problem in our site, not sure about all the others. I haven't checked myself but you should probably check the Glacier NP regulations, perhaps hammocks aren't allowed (?). The fact I have never seen one in two years makes me wonder. Glacier is a highly 'regulated' area for being a wilderness backcountry, made necessary, I'm sure, by the fragile environment and the popularity.

+Joe Kylen Thank you for the kind words. I'm getting amped for my 2016 trips - not sure where I'm going yet - but it's going to be hard to beat all the places I was able to go in 2015. I keep learning and will continue to try to improve. I do have plans to do a couple 'off season' videos - a couple more 'gear' videos and maybe a re-release or two of older videos with full HD quality and better editing. Stay tuned, and thank you for watching.

David, great trip. I am new into hiking and your video was great. I love the outdoors and hiking is just another way to enjoy it. I have four children and we have done several short hikes this year. I just videoed my first hike with them but your video was far superior. What kind of camera do you use? I am looking forward to future videos

For the 2013 Glacier trip I used a Panasonic SDC-HD9 3CCD HD camcorder. A very nice piece of equipment. I've since upgraded to a Canon Vixia HF G10 'semi-pro' camcorder but I'm holding on to the HD9 because even though it is 2008 technology it is still pretty remarkable for what it can do.

Just watched your video. Love it. I'm planing the same trip with my wife and daughter. She was wondering if you are allowed to wash up in the lakes or streams? Can't wait to go. Hope we get the permit. Thanks

Awesome video!I didn't think I could see prettier scenery than I did a cpl weeks ago in Snowmass Wilderness.But your trip at the very least rivals it...definitely better water falls!!What was the elevation?

Is that your bank check with account and routing info at the beginning of the video? I'd be wary of having it exposed like that. GNP is awesome and your video is great.

Awesome video!! Ive watched it like 100 times. Can you do this trip in mid-late july?
@davidgrayin
@davidgrayin 8 жыл бұрын
+William Murray Thank you very much for watching! Mid-July is typically a bit early but it all depends on the snow pack that year. This trail in particular would be 'difficult', dangerous, to impossible in snow/late season ice because a couple of the sections - Swiftcurrent Trail, and Granite Park to Fifty Mountain have long stretches where the trail is carved into essentially a cliff face. There are a few other areas after Fifty Mountain that could be 'exciting' with snow too - the last climb up to Stoney Indian Lake, Stoney Indian Pass (well, passes, there are two) and the last part of the climb to the Ptarmigan Tunnel. I certainly wouldn't rule it out though - just depends on the season. You can good information on current trail conditions from the Glacier backcountry website, and a call to the rangers at the backcountry permit office would get you the most current information. Last year someone commented that they had done the North Fork area passes in late June (similar in parts to the Northern Loop trails) so it certainly can be done.

Love Cody! I guess you didn't bring a tarp during this trip? Thanks to your vids I ordered a small tarp and will be dry on our camp sites!
@davidgrayin

No, I didn't have the tarp prior to this trip. In fact, it was the storm at Elizabeth Lake on the last night in this video that motivated me to buy the tarp I now have. If you look at the 2014 Glacier Trip, I brought the 'new' tarp and we set it up when we were at Kootenai Lake in the rain, and it made all the difference in the world.

Well done, thanks for sharing your trip. it helps me plan for mine. Would you mind sharing what video camera you used?

Carl - I used a Panasonic HDC-SD9P for Glacier. It's an old, but relatively small,l 3CCD camera. I've used more modern single sensor cameras - including GoPro Hero 3 Black and Sony HDR-AS10 - but nothing seems to be able to compare from a video quality standpoint with the old 3CCD cameras (newer cameras all seems to use one sensor element, except the big high-end professional cameras). I decided the extra 8 ounces for the SD9 were worth it for Glacier.
