David I love your video's. They give me strength to know I can do this. I'm 56 years old. I just recently lost my wife this past January. A friend shared your videos with me. I have watched everything. Hiking gives me a peace that nothing else has been able to. Next year I am planning my first backpacking adventure. When I'm feeling down, I watch your video's and they really help me to focus. Thank you so much for sharing like you do. You actually make us feel like we are there with you. Of course, we miss the rain, the sleet and the 20 degree weather, but I can't wait to experience it first hand!!!! Thank you my friend. Thank you so very much!

I'm very sorry for the loss of your wife - that's too young. Your words are very kind, and an inspiration to me. Feedback like yours is one of the things I think about when the 'stuff' gets tough out there - a reminder that I'm not just hiking for me. And at 56 you're just a youngster (I'm 57). When you get going on your own backpacking just let me know if there is anything I can do to help, and give me a shout if you're looking for someone to hike with. Take care.

Thank you so for your kind words. Man, I am telling you, if I feel down, I just kick back and watch your Ansel Adams wilderness video. It centers me. Your still photography is so amazing. You actually make us feel like we are part of your adventure. I am originally from New Castle Indiana and we moved to Las Vegas 9 years ago. I'm going home for the first time in all those years in a few months. I'm gathering some friends to go hiking at McCormack Creek. Thank you for the offer as well. Take care my friend! Keep on inspiring!!

Hey Steve. Thank you for watching and for the kind feedback. I'm envious that you're heading to Dolly Sods - a great place that I've been to only once but would love to hike again. If Glacier can somehow work out for you I would certainly recommend doing everything possible to get there - it is basically backpacking 'nirvana'! I'm hoping/planning to get back there in 2021 myself.

David thank you for the hard work on these videos as you said in the video. 5hrs of work for 1hr of final product is not easy. So it is much appreciated.
@davidgrayin6 жыл бұрын
It is a lot of work, but I really enjoy it (truly a 'labor of love') and it's worth the effort. I typically count on about 1 hour of editing for every hour that I'm actually hiking on the trails, and that proved about right for this video. I actually ended up with a little over 7 hours of raw video for this trip, a 'record' by about two hours for me, and this produced almost exactly 1 hour of finished video (plus 8 minutes or so of slide show). Thank you for the nice feedback.

Beautiful Adventure. Thank you for sharing. Your third night with an instant trail family is what makes for unforgetable memories. Those are the trail nights I hope to encounter as I continue my adventures.
@davidgrayin6 жыл бұрын
Yes, those are the kind of nights I just love, and they're made even more special when you're hiking solo and rarely seeing anyone else. And that one was really amazing because I had gone from what was certainly the worst night I've ever spent backpacking to the best night I've ever spent backpacking in a two day span (quite the emotional roller coaster!). There are very few backcountry campsites at Glacier that allow campfires, so many variables had to line up just right to make that night happen... but I'm sure glad they did.

Just finished watching this over the last three nites. That second day was quite the hike and then to top if off with a brutal nite at Boulder. I was up there around Aug 9 in 2017; we also had a bit of a fire/smoke issue then and we had quite the storm to greet us as well. I've been going to the Park most of my life but only recently started backpacking it. I really enjoyed the professionalism of your production. I also have been doing videos and movies on youtube the last several years of my backpacking around Glacier. I look forward to checking out the other videos.

That is really some , undesirable , beautiful territory. Thank you for filming and sharing it with us. Watching you freezing and wishing for warmer weather makes me smile. Here in Florida I'm sweating and wishing for cooler weather. What a difference some miles and a location makes. For a cool mornings breakfast , Mountain House Biscuits and Gravy. What an awesome video. Gave me chills hearing singing around camp fire
@davidgrayin6 жыл бұрын
Yeah... I know. That was a rough section of the video to edit because I had over 2 hours of raw video of that night to go through, and eventually get down to the few minutes I used (I captured all that video because as the night unfolded I realized how special it was, and originally planned on doing an entire separate video of just 'the music at Bowman', but the audio quality for much of it wasn't that great - learned a hard lesson about placing a roaring campfire between the camera and the artist!). It took a lot of editing time, but when I finally arrived upon the end product it gave me chills too... and I said to myself 'nailed it'!. I love that part of the video, and it will give me special personal memories for the rest of my life. It was truly a great evening around the fire.

Thank you! I actually have one more 'bonus' trip coming up next week. I'm doing a short weekend trip to Great Smoky Mountains NP. Assuming the trip goes as planned I'm hoping to have that video published by the end of October. I also did do the planned Colorado trip in August but illness caused us to cut the backpacking short, but I do plan to publish some sort of video of the trip, just to fill in the 'missing piece' from my planned 2018 agenda - I'll probably have that one published in November.

my wife and 4 other friends did this hike last year (late july 2019). your video brought back so many good memories of this incredible park. it was nice to see how all the foliage we had, turned beautiful colors for you in the fall. one thing you likely didnt have that we "enjoyed" were the black flies and mosquitoes. pro tip heading up to bolder pass camp site : you dont need to carry water up and over the pass, plenty of water up high (sad - streaming off all the high snow fields). we always joke that the long drop at boulder pass reminds us of the em forster novel/movie: a room with a view! - a must for any quality outdoor placement. cheers

I've hiked in a lot of spectacular areas, but there are only three places that have really made me feel that way - Glacier, the Sierras, and the Four Pass Loop. And that's exactly what it feels like - you sit and look out at the scenery and it's almost impossible to comprehend that 'real' places like that exist.

Thank you for taking the time to film your trips. I appreciate every second of time you put into your videos. What a beautiful area to backpack. Well done! On a recent camp trip and on a backpacking trip I had a similar encounter with a brave deer. My first encounter I was on a solo when a deer popped into camp after dark. He keep coming towards me and it was unsettling. The second time on the backpacking trip a rather large buck made the same approach and was not afraid at all.

Awww... that is incredible! Another 'it's a small world' experience for sure, and I can't tell you how much I appreciated that pile of firewood on the first night at Kintla Lake - thank you so much for taking the effort to leave it for us! I know it's always strange to see a video showing someone else following so closely in your foot steps. A few of the people I ran into on this hike shared their videos with me, and I find it so cool to watch the experiences they had before/during/after I ran into them on the trail.

Every time I come across photos or videos of Glacier my response is "I wanna hug it!" My husband has come to know that when he hears that phrase while I'm on the computer it has something to do with Glacier National Park! I was worried you wouldn't be able to get there because of the fire but wow what an awesome adventure minus the hypo-thermic night of course. That evening around the campfire and live music was awesome made me wish I was there (I was probably in Acadia National Park then)! @davidgrayin6 жыл бұрын
The new gear - sleeping bag at least - is already on order! Actually, I washed my 'old' sleeping bag in Granger's Down Wash (great stuff) and it is now 'good as new' - or at least a lot better than it was. I had never washed it in the 10 years I've owned it, thinking it required special laundering that I couldn't do, and the accumulation of sweat, salt, oils, etc. were what was causing the down to 'clump', etc. But I still bought a warmer bag, to give me more options when it's really cold (don't want to go through something like that night at Boulder Pass again).

Way to go David! Another GREAT video! Hope you get a new sleeping bag for next year. I have a Western Mountaineering Alpinlite. Love it and it's super warn for a 20°F bag. A little pricey but well worth it for the weight to price ratio!

Thank you for the nice feedback. A few people in these comments have said that the 'kitty'-critter was likely a Pine Marten. After looking them up on google I'm thinking that is likely, but I couldn't rule out a mink either, though I don't know if minks are in that area. People have said that Pine Martens are nasty, aggressive critters - makes me wonder what would have happened if my less-than-macho scream hadn't scared him over the cliff!

As someone who has a reputation as having gone out hiking at least a time or 100 lol. I know that there can be sleepless nights, cold mornings, persistent bad weather, but as you say, that all fades away when the sun comes out. You told the story in such an inviting manner and I could feel myself getting drawn in, being part of the crowd around the fire, or standing in silence on those mountain vista's.
