MOUNT OBERLIN VIA HIDDEN LAKE TRAILHEAD: SCRAMBLE UP AT LOGAN PASS IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Mount Oberlin is located at Logan Pass and is likely the easiest peak to summit in Glacier National Park. Mount Oberlin is visible from Going to the Sun Road and the parking lot of Logan Pass. Mount Oberlin summit is just over 3 miles out and back and 1,500 feet of elevation gain. A faint trail leads toward the saddle of Mount Clements and Mount Oberlin almost directly out of the Logan Pass parking lot. The very popular Hidden Lakes Trail is also the beginning of the Mount Oberlin hike. Do not let the hoards of people at Logan Pass detour you from the summit as the crowds dissolve quickly once you peel off towards the saddle. Once you make the saddle, prepare yourself for a fun scramble up to the Oberlin summit. There is no trail to the summit after the saddle, however goat trails are visible here and there. Wildlife is abundant in this area so keep a look out! This would be an ideal summit for a sunrise or sunset in Glacier National Park.

Did that hike myself this past July (no smoke clear day no little wind) in the late afternoon and saw the most beautiful sunset I’ve seen in 25 years of my now 50 And the Rocky Mountain Goat is not sick at all. He lives there as king of the castle because of all the salt. Nice fam & videos

Nice! I’ve been lucky enough to be there 3 separate weeks over the past year and we’ve only had decent weather for 1 of those weeks. So hard to time that place. We did have 80s and sun this last time we were there though 😁. Otherwise clouds, smoke or storms. It’s definitely my most favorite place, so unique! Glad you took advantage of that short and easy scramble for a killer sunset 👍🏼. I try to explain to people how great that spot would be for a sunrise or sunset.

I wonder too if people have fed the goat for him to come that close? They can be aggressive and dangerous if that is the case. A few years ago a man was killed by a goat in Olympic National Park when they stopped for lunch.

Is there any place in GNP that isn’t amazing! Love the channel. Love the music. Love your style. Love your family. Your kids are a bit older than ours and your hikes are a level or two above us. This will be great for us to watch and find hikes like this one to do in the future. Inspiring!

The Medicine Grizzly area in the Cut Bank entrance of Glacier is flat and long 👍🏼 when we were there in August we had the entire lake to ourselves. That might be your best bet. The Polebridge area is also less visited than the others. Have a great time Tammy!

It’s a tricky scramble to the top but just take your time and be careful. If my girls can do it you can 😁👍🏼 let me know how it goes! I’d love to hear about it. We’re headed back in August as well!

I’m in Glacier for the summer and I’m thinking about doing this Solo, not to sound silly but with all the twist and turns and clinging through and over the rocks.. is it easy to know the way back down.. I wouldn’t want to get turned around and confused and not see how to get back down haha

Hi Jennifer, Oberlin is a nice quick fun scramble. If you have some experience scrambling and a little experience with route finding you should be ok 👍🏼. Just start early enough so you have light to find your way down and you should be fine. Let me know how it goes 😁👍🏼 enjoy!

How long did this round trip hike take you guys to complete?

If I remember correctly we started around noon and were back at our car around 4. A solo hiker could probably get it done very quickly as we like to take out time and my recording eats up time as well. That hike would be a great sunrise or sunset hike! We saw nobody up there that day, except that mountain goat. It’s a great quick scramble to an amazing perch.
