@Norbert_Sattler24 күн бұрын
Not to mention that Rome invented sewers, so it makes sense they'd know how to build something water-tight. Though I'd imagine that the hanging gardens beat them to making water-tight, big structures by quite a bit of time.
@bomcabedal24 күн бұрын
It was for some time, but only until the structure of tunnels and lifts below it was built, which made this impossible. There have been two (or possibly only one), with the last Naumachia (sea battle) taking place in AD 85. Even then it was sort of underwhelming since the Colosseum's arena wasn't huge (c. 80 x 50 metres) and didn't allow for large vessels. Sea battles were typically performed in the much larger Augustinian basin to the west of the city, on the other side of the Tiber river; the river's water could be used to flood the area. By the 3rd century no sea battles had been performed in the Colosseum for over a century.

3:37 - Yes, flooding the Colosseum to do mock naval battles was a thing, yes. I don't know of any time they transported live sharks for these things, but they did occasionally add in crocodiles imported from Egypt. It wasn't just the Colosseum, either. Other amphitheaters could do it, too, but the Colosseum was custom designed so that it could be flooded or drained in a matter of minutes (other flood-ready entertainment venues took hours of backbreaking labor to do the same). It's an impressive illustration of Roman engineering and mastery of hydraulics. That said, the ability was rarely used. It was expensive to maintain the waterways and machinery and the mock battles didn't tend to be very popular.

The Coliseum could be flooded and they did in fact had mock naval battles. That was in deed historically accurate. No sharks though, instead they had Crocodiles. They also had rhinos, but no they did NOT ride them like some Chaos Warriors of Khorne from Warhammer or something. The rest is also all BS, like the twin emperors. Geta & Caracalla were brothers but NOT twins and were supposed to rule together, as their father, Septimus Severus had decided. ( 2 emperors ruling together was a thing). Caracalla though had a different idea, he murdered his brother in front of their mother, then executed another 20,000 Romams who were suspected to be his brother's followers and took the throne. He was described as a brutal tyrant and a pretty masculine guy. ( the guy's hobby was hunting lions!) The movie turned him into a mentally challenged femboy. He was eventually assassinated, while being on a military campaign & taking a piss. I'm not joking! Also, Macrinus ( Denzel's character) was a real person and became briefly Emperor. He was no former slave though and also not black, but rather of Semitic ethnicity, Middle-Eastern/ Arab looking in other words. He managed to rise through the ranks of Rome and eventually took the throne. That would have made for a far better movie.

Those ancient Romans were clever folks. That’s why their empire was so big and lasted so long. That’s why we’re still using their bridges and roads. They absolutely filled that coliseum with water to stage naval battles. They used fresh water instead of sea water, though, and didn’t use man-eating sharks. Using seawater and capturing and transporting sharks is too much trouble. However, they did drive a lot of land animals to extinction by killing them in their coliseums.

There historically were mock naval battles involving ships and filling up water in the arena, although that was limited given the size of the arena. It was primarily ship vs ship battles, not sharks in the water. Hell, the main plot of Lucius wanting revenge for his wife's death doesn't even make sense and it's the thing the whole movie hinges on. With Maximas the audience was able to understand and sympathize with his motivations because he joined the legions to provide a better life for his wife and son, was offered the entire empire on a platter but turned it down to be with them, then had Commodus torture and murder the both of them out of petty jealousy and spite despite them both being helpless and harmless. In Lucius case he SUPPORTED his wife's decision to become a soldier in a war, helped her get to the front lines, armed and armored her, and she wasn't singled out or harmed out of malice. She was just another casualty of war.

Dude you should have looked up in history books about the Colosseum being flooded and the naval battles some of the emperors hosted, yes the sharks were not needed and clearly fictional although crocs from Egypt would be brought in. Also you should have read a little into the relationship of Caracalla and Geta, joint emperors that absolutely couldn’t stand each other and in fact occupied different sides of the palace in Rome with punishment of death for those that crossed over the boundary. You’re Right about Lucius and his portrayal though he just didn’t feel right and also his wife’s death almost felt inconsequential to him. Denzel’s character Macrinus’s was miscast imho because again if you read about him he was of ‘Berber’ background, Denzel’s New York accent, mannerisms and general acting left me feeling he was filming a sequel to ‘The Equaliser’ next door with Pedro Pascal.

Naval battles in the Coliseum; yes they were a thing. Sharks; no that's fantasy. Sharks, especially great whites, don't survive out of free sea water. hence why there are none even in modern aquariums. Animals in the Coliseum; yes they were a thing but but no, not as figthing but as hunting spectacles or to kill hepless, defenseless, unarmed prisoners. Because animals were expensive and gladiators too. Commodus was reknowned for killing beasts in the arena, including some weird choices like girafes. Yes not a bad film but indeed quite needless. Small ship on ship battles though. Not really sharks. There were only a few mock naval battles held in the Colosseum for how expensive they were to get all the water in there. Most of the Naval Re-enactments did not happen in the Colosseum, but rather in the Lakes or Rivers. There were several recorded Naval Battles in the Colosseum over years from AD 80 to AD 107, when the last one happened in the Colosseum. If you were in Rome you would basically most likely only see one mock naval battle in the colosseum in your lifetime. You would more likely see such a battle in the Tiber River or in the Mediterranean Sea. Did they do it? Yes. But it was difficult and expensive to do and had to be planned very well to pull it off. Most naumachiae or mock Naval Battles were actually in the lakes or rivers since the water was already there and didn’t have to be relocated over longer periods of time.

I genuinely don't get why this movie exists or who asked for it. I could understand the motive being "I like money" if it was made a few years after the original. But making a sequel to a movie that wrapped things up with the neatest of bows, *24 years* after the fact is just insane. Its the definition of striking while the iron is *ice cold* The only logical explanation is money laundering lol

Gladiator was created by an artist/storyteller and Gladiator II was made by an out of touch failure.
