That just how it is people need to stop thinking that any spend venture that fail is just laundering scheme. It's Hollywood accounting. Honestly if you look into it the way these places operate it should be illegal. The studios even loan themselves money at high interest rates to inflate the budgets and get more of the investors cash without actually having to show anything for it. Currently it's all legal but it really shouldn't be. Studios rake in cash, claim a LOSS so they don't have to pay the actors/director revenue percentages and claim stupid amounts for basics like kraft services, paperclips etc They even make up their own LLC's to supply themselves with the items and they charge themselves a pretty penny for it. They put all that money back into their own pockets. The movies don't have to make a profit they just have to look professional enough to suggest it's all above board and they use they bare minimum to make it. In any other type of business it could be fraud.

American film studios almost always had more money than studios from anywhere else. But in the past, they at least had the wherewithal to keep budgets within a reasonable range. Plus, many of the great filmmakers of the past came up under Roger Corman, the king of low-budget filmmaking. Nowadays, it seems like the Hollywood studios all exist in some kind of bubble where films have to cost at least $150M. Meanwhile, due to digital distribution and streaming, worldwide audiences have access to more different kinds of films than ever before. Films that are made in Korea or Japan, where they can't throw oil tankers full of cash at every film. They have to actually be clever about how they do things. And, since they can't compete in spectacle with Hollywood, they have to focus on well-told stories and well-written characters (things which are in short supply in big-budget Hollywood films)

The shine is most definitely off The Rock. He hasn't had a hit in a while now and certainly isn't a draw anymore. I think he knows it as well which is why he's started making sporadic appearance for WWF again - prepping his backup!

Modern budgets are a clever trick. Let’s say you need to make $300 million. The way to guarantee that is just pay everyone out of the budget. Relying upon box office numbers is a big risk. When the movie inevitably fails to earn a profit it also acts as a tax reduction tool. Two birds with one stone. Essentially they’ve socialized the film industry by paying themselves without earning it.

Problem with that is that less budget comes from investors interested in the craft (or making money) and more from advertisers who want their stuff advertised. Which makes the movie worse. Which drives away investors and viewers. Which means we"re starting to get movies made not for the audience, but the advertisers that paid for it, i.e. for nobody. $250million slop-jobs that will go largely unseen and instantly forgotten.

I read that movies have to make 2.5 times their budget. which makes it even worse because that means they needed to make $625 million to break even.
@n0m4nic2 ай бұрын
The exact number is not set into stone, the 2x is a general estimate. What is important is when they make the bulk of their money. Elemental likely would have needed to make 2.5 times, probably even more, its budget because it started generating money late into its theater run. The theaters take a bigger cut the longer a film is in the theater so the box office is a skewed metric.
@fattiger69572 ай бұрын
Yep, because marketing is not accounted for in the announced budgets. Plus, theaters and international distributers take their cut. This is doubly true for China, where the Hollywood studio has to give an even larger cut than anywhere else in the world.
