I never liked the Engineers, David the Android and their black goo story. Alien works when we don't know the origin of the xenomorphs. Their mysterious background made them scary. The derelict ship in Alien is creepy and it felt like the space jockey was a grotesque creature grown out of the chair simply to fly the spaceship. This was in line with HR Giger's nightmarish fascination with imagining creatures grown inside a machine just to be trapped inside that machine for all its life. Aliens started to move away from the horror and mystery. But Prometheus and Covenent screwed it up completely by giving the xenomorphs a back story

Alien Isolation was apparently a massive inspiration for the movie's direction. And you can honestly tell, for better and for worse.
@steppingstonemediagroupllc5 ай бұрын
According to IMDB, Alien: Isolation is a game based on Ripley's daughter, Amanda Ripley trekking out to find her mother. If that was the case, they should have used that theme as motivation to drive this film as well. Instead it is just a bunch of orphans who somehow can just lift off into outerspace using their own space shuttle that's been doubling as a doublewide trailer park, without clearance or a flightplan at the drop of a hat. They then board an abandoned science vessel that no other seasoned space pirates or salvagers bothered to investigate for 20 years.
@JacobPaul-ix7oc5 ай бұрын
The game was great as an _Alien_ story and as one of the best survival horror games ever made. Here's what I could find on the movie being inspiration for the game. From CBR The highly anticipated next installment in the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, has entered theaters. With a promise to return the franchise to its more horror-based roots, director Fede Alvarez took inspiration from not only Ripley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens, but also from Creative Assembly’s 2014 survival horror game Alien: Isolation. On the Inside Total Film podcast, Alvarez spoke about how the game influenced him and the movie. "Alien: Isolation was kind of what made me see that Alien could truly be terrifying and done well today. I played a few years after it came out. Don’t Breathe was coming out. Or was I waiting for Don’t Breathe to come out, and I was playing the game. That’s why, at the time, I was like, ‘F***, if I could do anything, I would love to do Alien and scare the audience again with that creature and those environments.’ I was playing, and realizing how terrifying Alien could be if you take it back to that tone.” There’s More Connections to Alien Isolation Alien: Isolation did more than influence the general tone of the movie. Elements of the game actually made it into the movie. In the first behind-the-scenes image from the set of Alien: Romulus, fans of Alien: Isolation might have spotted the Emergency Phone kiosk in the background. For those unfamiliar with the game, the Emergency Phone serves as a savepoint for players and usually precedes an encounter with the terrifying alien onboard the ship with you. This is something Alvarez took note of and even implemented in the movie. “The movie is set up in a way that every time something bad is about to happen, you will see a phone. In the game, every time you knew there’s a phone you’d go, ‘Fuck, I’m about to go into some bad set-piece.’ It’s the same thing here. You’ll see they’re planted strategically throughout the film. When you see the phone, it’s like: brace for impact.”
@steppingstonemediagroupllc5 ай бұрын
@@JacobPaul-ix7oc OK. So Mr. Alvarez admits, he was more concerned about riping off a video game, than creating a truly good stand alone film that would re-energize the franchise. Geez. Where do I sign up to get $80M to rehash someone else's work. I can do that!

To say this film took a wrong turn in the third act, and then went completely off the rails in the last 10 minutes is the most accurate, and most polite way of stating the facts without condemning the entire film. Acts I & II were indeed headed in the right direction, but something went wrong in the third Act. It is almost as if a studio executive walked into the writer's room along with their 8-year old child at their side and said, "We need a giant monster at the end so we can sell some lunch boxes when the kids start back to school next week.... Isn't that right sweetheart?" [Update] It just occurred to me that this space station Romulus and Remus was large enough to house at least 30-50 scientists, but when the protagonists of the film arrive to pilfer cryopods, it only had 5.

Besides, the out of control bio weapon angle has been done to death, and the notion of nature doing it better is more in line with the powerlessness and fear of the original films. *1.* Let's go back to natural origins. Say Xenomorphs are native to a world that undergoes regular extinction cycles (perhaps its orbit takes it near an asteroid belt every few thousand earth years, or solar activity periodically increases to the point it causes intense, planetwide fires). The eggs last so long in order to wait for life to return. They incorporate the host form so they're always ready for new environments. Acid blood prevents vermin from eating the eggs before suitable hosts can re-evolve. This means that their homeworld can be anywhere, and if they haven't woken up yet in that cycle, you'd never know they were there. It also means they don't have to be part of a balanced ecosystem. They are apocalypse survivors whose only concern is to eliminate all threats and produce as many eggs as possible before the next apocalypse, which in turn gives them a reason to be so vicious. Sustainability isn't a factor for them because their eggs can wait for a wasteland to become lush again. All they care about is wiping out all threats at any cost. *2.* The Space Jockeys are experimenting with xeno DNA via the black goo, but xeno DNA is extremely good at reasserting itself, hence all the failures. *3.* David may think he created the xenomorphs in their "perfect" form, but all he actually did was strip away the Space Jockey tampering, thus allowing the original DNA to better assert itself. He's been patting himself on the back for something he has no idea he played no part in. ______________________________ *-- Potential Mini-Series Plot --* A garden world full of life. A xenobiologist's dream come true. So much variety! And beneath the surface, paleontologists find even more variety of extinct species in their excavations. Thanks to the apocalypse cycle, this world produces new species at ×10 the normal rate. The research opportunities are endless. But something is odd. The same "spike to the head" wound appears over and over on different species throughout the geologic columns, even through several apocalypse cycles. Eventually, they uncover a network of caverns, and deep inside, things start looking very different. There's more remains here than in the entire excavation, and the walls don't seem right. They discover fossilized nests with millions of eggs waiting. And since the next apocalypse is known to still be centuries away the humans had gone ahead and built numerous settlements on this world to exploit its research and resources (building massive infrastructure on a place about to go fubar would be stupid, Hollywood 😑, so no using that for an "explosive finish"). So, if the nests are planetwide, then each settlement is sitting on a time bomb. It's a world too good to be true, with biological resources beyond imagining, hiding its darkest secret just beneath its inviting exterior.

About 1. I like the idea of a ecosystem with cyclical extintion events. But the cause of those extinction events could be the xenos themselves. It goes like this: the xenos destroys all life bigger than a cat, then stay dormant for thousands for years because no more prey is available. When life returns to the zone, they end encountering the eggs at some point, and the cycle begins again.
@Shoutatclouds5 ай бұрын
I ain't reading all of that... (I read all of that)

0. Seeing xenomorphs as ambush predators is a flawed point of view. In what movie or game have you actually seen xenomorphs hunting and consuming prey, like predators do? Yeah, they probably have to sustain themselves of something, but it's clear that they are, actually, parasitic creatures, parasitoids, who absolutely NEED their victims as hosts in order to reproduce, because they can't mate with each other and produce the final stage of their reproduction cycle, which can become an adult. Just like parasitoid wasps can't survive without their arthropod hosts, xenomorphs can't survive without humans, engineers and whatnot. They don't hunt, kill and eat them, they use them as means of propagating their species.

Ridley Scott is (inexplicably) the producer for all things alien at Disney. He is also producing the upcoming Alien Earth TV Series. This is despite him being on record as saying the Alien is "baked" as in done. You will notice that all alien films since prometheus have used his Scott Free studios to produce them tho. When it comes to cinema in recent years for this particular franchise, Prometheus was the better choice with how they handled their approach (not the best, but was very pleasing) to the series of Alien saga. Let me first start off by saying I was highly anticipating this film to capture exactly what I was looking forward to. Biggest waste of money and a major letdown (they should’ve just released this on the sci-fi channel or Netflix). Some People in the theater act like it was something phenomenal and Horrifying, and I was becoming less entertained by the minutes looking at my watch waiting for this piece of shit to be over. Certain moments caught my attention, but it wasn’t good enough. Alien Covenant was better than this…AVP was more entertaining imo, and I hated that movie. Even ALIEN 3 gets more credit than this shit! I’m not gonna be one of the ones Dissecting the whole entire series with how this installment crashes, but what a complete joke. This was Disney tier, teenage drama bullshit! Fede Álvarez is pretty hype with he’s following, and I will never go see any of those works again that come from this guy. Thank you for turning this into a dead ending experience. I have never been so bored in my entire life of viewing cinema. BORING!!!

There is a story already practically written that I don't think people realize. Alien, Aliens, and Alien Isolation are the only ones I care about, but if they were going to make something for the franchise I'd like to see Newt's Tale. Weyland colonizing the planet then shipping in the colonists, scientist, engineers, security, and the blue color families etc. to Acheron (LV-426) many years after the Nostromo incident. Colonists slowly start disappearing mysteriously and members of their families. One by one the alien queen's horde grows building the large infestation that became Aliens. Someone had to catch those face huggers in the lab Berk laid out for Ripley and Newt. Who did it? Also ,these things were being studied. Who was studying them? The movie could be set up like a huge boring Weyland orientation video pitching to the best and brightest to work for Weyland off world,... why you can even bring your families to live among the stars and make a ton of credits working for The Weyand Corporation. So Rebecca, her brother and family mount up with their clever top blue collar construction leader Father and plant Operator Mom for a promotional opportunity or because the company staff is slowly turning up missing there and they need good replacements who don't ask questions. Colonist improvising weapons to fight, kids running to hide, Newt getting separated and cunningly outsmarting the Aliens until the Space Marines and Ripley arrive. Boom! now that's the Alien movie I want to see.

@@lordy6666 Also, in fairness, from a pop culture standpoint, way more people associate Romulus with Star Trek than history. Sad? Yes, but also true. It's not unlike people in a movie having a problem, a character picks up a phone, and someone asks, "Who you gonna call?" No one can say that line in a movie without it incepting Ghostbusters into your head.

I have seen pretty much all of the installments of the Aliens series and have to say this is one of the best made sci-fi movies I have ever seen. I did not try to compare this movie with any other film rather wanted to see if I could genuinely enjoy the plot and for the most part the acting was pretty spot on and the scenery was quite outstanding. Treating each piece independently of other movies made me be able to enjoy the film. I really can't wait for a sequel to this movie.

Aliens and predators are in the same universe has the engineers... Because the xenomorph scale was in the yatja spaceship and the engineers created the xenomorphs and humans and it's Canon...

I cannot make this clearer: EVERYTHING he says is fucking on point. Everything I loved and hated about this movie he has nailed in less than 13 minutes.
