Yeah the way he was expected to go from "FUCK YOU YOURE NOT MY MOM" to "FUCK YOU MOM" to "I LOVE YOU MOM BUT FUCK YOUR HUSBAND" to "OK I LOVE YOU BOTH AND ACCEPT THAT I AM YOUR SON AND THAT I SHOULD CONTINUE MY FATHERS LEGACY" in the span of like 2 days in the story, and like 45 minutes in the movie makes you actually respect his performance a lot.

It needed a couple of more script rewrites. Mostly wanted to see more of Lucius' escape from rome and how he met and cared for his wife, which should have been the opening animation instead of a rehash of the first movie. There should have been way more of Pedro Pascal's character. Sure, he's tired of fighting in wars, but I wanted more of his relationship with Lucilla and more of them plotting against the emperors. And they really dropped the ball on the drama of General Acacius serving under maximus then marrying Maximus' old flame in Lucilla, being Lucius stepfather who sets everything in motion. The family dynamics of all three could have been wonderfully juicy.
@filmneek

Tbh I felt absolutely nothing for lucius’ quest. He wanted revenge for his wife’s death, a woman who was attempting to kill other soldiers during a battle who then in turn naturally got killed by the opposing army. We’re supposed to hate the general for that? What did they expect when firing arrows during a war. In the first film we sympathise because maximums’ family was unfairly targeted.
@Qwerty-db1js
@Qwerty-db1js Ай бұрын
Tbf, i thought lucius' vengeance was more about his inner struggles of who he really was. I never felt that it was about his wife. It's all about his abandonment as a kid. Lucius also seemed at his angriest when he finally talked to his mother.

Like maybe if we had gotten to see just a shred of the alleged depth of their relationship or if she had been killed in a more brutal or unfair way I might’ve cared a little bit more. @@matthiasknutzen6061 Him being mad is understandable. The problem is that the audience wouldn't have those emotions at all. They can't connect. He wants to get vengeance because of his wife. The problem for the audience is that she is a legitemate target to kill. We don't feel the emotion for her dead. While in the first movie the audience realizes that Maximus' wife and son are unjustly targeted, people connect more to his motivation. So the motivation of the characters while both originate from: My wife (family) got killed. Only one will hit an emotional snare with the audience. It's the one with killing of innocents and not the one with killing an archer in a fight.

I found him to be a very dull bootleg Crowe. He conveyed none of those subtle glimmers of soul and spirit that made Rusty one of the best of his gen. The thing that made the first Gladiator work so well was that it was it's own self contained story. Sure, it was inspired by Hamlet and Conan the Barbarian, but it still managed to work in both to tell a cohesive story, with a main protagonist and antagonist. Sure, but Maximus and Commodus have their set of followers and allies who all have their own motivations or goals, but these two are meant to be the primary focus. Thus the big climatic spectacle and heart wrenching finale fits. But in this "sequel", it feels dissonant. Not only does it have way to many characters that don't have enough focus, nor a strong connection for the protagonist, that we want to see the two battle it out in the climax.

@@Mallemartinnn You know what, I did actually look into naumachia, and you're right, they did flood the coliseum. However, of all the naumachia that were held, the most epic and impressive ones were in giant pools and lakes. By comparison, the naumachia held in the coliseum were really not that impressive, and after a while, they became expected. I'm not saying that they wouldn't be epic by our standards, but what I am saying is that by the time Geta and Carcalla were emperors, it was no longer what they once were. That and the fact that in the coliseum, they often used props because the ships couldn't navigate or sink in an impressive way (again, compared to the first naumachia that were much more grand). I think this still fits in well with the movie, though, as Geta and Carcalla are supposed to be the kind of emperors that don't really think outside the box and that waste money on grand things. Bad ideas for Gladiator III 1. Have Lucien voluntarily return to the ring to fight this time 2. Make there a bee hive combat type. For example, the ring is covered in open beehives, who have been agitated by the bee keepers, so that the gladiators have to fend off these angry killer bees 3. Have the arena set up with multiple lighting rods, and have the gladiators fight in a lighting storm, dodging between lightning strikes. 4. Lastly, have them fight alchemists, who are throwing jars full of chemical hallucinogens, disorientating the gladiators and giving them visions

I mean like yeah in comparison to the first, not as good but goddamn was it a joy to watch throughout. We don't get Swords and Sandals films anymore thinking back to stuff like Prince of Thieves, Three Musketeers or Count of Monte Cristo and I love that we finally got something like that. Scott has been very messy the last decade so I got to give him credit for doing something I've liked for the first time since probably Robin Hood. As a Mescal fanboy, was a bit disappointed, found him one note and I adore his work in everything from Aftersun, AOUS and Normal People. But Denzel, Joseph Quinn and Pedro were all really good and interesting. Shoutout to Tim Mciennerney too. People can give me shit but I enioyed it. Small Things Like These is still my No.1 of the year so far though. Highly recommend that

Paul mescal did incredible. The movie was a pleasant surprise. In the age of AI slop and fan service cash cows, this was truly a fun watch. Any other director would had Luscious yell R U NOT ENTERTAINED? and it would’ve totally killed the vibe. Nah they nailed it. First review I don’t see eye to eye with you, that’s okay, to each our own. Seems like you only enjoyed the villains. Hope you rethink it in the future rewatches. Either way, was it a perfect movie? Not by any means. But a breath of fresh air regardless.

One pattern I have seen is that Ridley Scott is a great visionary but not a great expander. Whenever he returns to his own previous property he can't tap the same magic. Ive seen it with alien prometheus and especially covenant and with this one. Thank God he didn't return for blade runner. Otherwise I bet that one would have been worse than what Denis pulled off. All his greatest works have been singular visions.

The story made no sense, Denzel did give a “Denzel” performance, in my opinion he was the one who stepped into the overacting part, Pedro Pascal was seriously good, he communicated the sovereignty that his character was supposed to portray and it was sad how they didn’t take more advantage of him on screen, liked the fact that everytime the emperor bacame more paranoid his eyeshadow was darker and dramatic. Paul didn’t manage to make me feel anything during his speeches, it was just meh, this movie was a solid 6/10

#1 issue is Maximus "Lucious is safe" and then Gladiator 2's entire premise being like, "Lucious isn't safe and immediately exited Rome". If "the mob is Rome" then tell me how Lucious would be in any danger after the whole mob of Rome just watched what Maximus did. Cmon' guys. Just started from a terrible premise in general. Also, who tf are these 2 goons standing in as emperors and how did they get power from the daughter of Marcus Aurelius AND the senate? They seemed like inheritors of the throne but there was no one to inherit it from. Strange and disconnected.
@violentscorl697
@violentscorl697 20 күн бұрын
It wasn’t the Roman populace endangering Lucius, but the people that wanted the throne for themselves (read: Aristocrats, senators, Generals etc.). If you’re interested read up a bit about the intrigue surrounding Commodus‘ death and the following emperors. Lucius WAS in danger. Either they would’ve just murdered him to eliminate the threat to their ascent to the throne, or they would’ve made him their puppet, which would’ve been his death sometime down the line as well.

I wish I can undo the Horrendous Gladiator II , Erased from my thoughts, I do not cared, if they called it a commercial success globally. It literally suck, like having a nice Ferrari but no engine. They had all the cgi, performance, funding to make it better but the most important thing was the story itself. Direction itself didn't know where it was going, misleading characters. Biggest gripe was the antagonist, at 1st the General was the enemy, then the twin emperors, finally Denzel who shouldn't of even been in that film to begin with... Didn't sound anything of 200 A.D... Took attention away from film to his real life mannerism. Russell Crowe Gladiator didn't need a reboot or sequel.

The version of the film that focused more on Denzel Washington's character is on the cutting room floor alongside May Calamawy's scenes - it seem she was mostly working with him and there's speculation that she was originally going to play Macrinus' daughter. Scott reportedly compared the casting for her role to the search for Mescal due to quote 'the importance of the character to the story' - so its no wonder that what remains without her is a bland and unoriginal rehash. It sounds like Scott (call it cowardice, politics etc) cut out what may well have been the best part of the film.

The hidden backdrop is the fall of Rome. Marcus Aurelius was the last emperor of Rome's golden age, and it will never again bask in the glory of his rule. All the talk of the "dream of Rome"--but we know those days will never come. Those speeches ring hollow. In this way, the film instead becomes a tragedy, in spite of itself. Denzel is the hero, his rejection in favor of the hereditary rule and false promises of Lucius is symbolic of Rome's fall. At least that's my reading, whatever the creators intended I don't care
