big agree re: Challengers. I watched it with my sisters in theaters and you just can't beat the sensuality, humor, and drama. For a movie about lust, watching it perfectly captures that feeling and translates it to the viewer's experience.

I REALLY appreciate you putting your sponsors at the end, it allows me to just listen to you gush about movies while I work on the house without having to come down off the ladder to skip through 60 seconds of content. Always enjoy hearing your almost universally positive takes on movies-- even if the film isn't great, you always find something to dissect or discuss, but mostly you're just praising art you really enjoyed and it makes me realize why I love film.

I think the substance is also a deeper film than people give it credit for, love reading it as a parasitic mother/ daughter relationship For me that’s the movie of the year, idc if people say the third act lost them, for me I didn’t want it to end any other way
@luigiwiiUU2 күн бұрын
movies dont need to be deep to be good, they need to be good to be good.
@kashoot47822 күн бұрын
@ fully agree, I just also genuinely think this about the substance
@pigg902 күн бұрын
I too think it's deeper than people give it credit for. The mother/daughter parasitic relationship was one layer that I too noticed. Another was the similarly parasitic relationship between our authentic selves and the person we pretend to be to live up to the expectations of others and gain external validation. The more we bury our authentic self, the more it festers and makes us feel a growing void of dissatisfaction and self-loathing. The body horror felt like a visceral visual representation of the psychological impact of repressing our authenticity.

All of Us Strangers, The Holdovers, May December, and Poor Things were in my top 5 for 2023 in that order (I'm in the US so they were released here earlier), and The Outrun and A Real Pain, along with His Three Daughters, are my top 3 of 2024. It's always easy to come up with excuses and talk how the situation "isn't that bad". "No Other Land" really gets you to understand how it feels when some soldiers come over and just "decide" that your home isn't your home anymore. It's incredibly cruel. Unfortunately ths people who ought to be watching this won't and will just say that it's propaganda taking things out of context. I cannot imagine any circumstance where this kind of thing could ever be justifiable.
