What do you think of trailer? What’s your favorite historical fiction book/movie?

I’ve never thought about how integrated the culture of Rome is in our modern, Western sci-fi and fantasy genres-such an interesting insight!! I guess I really do think about the Roman Empire every day…

I never saw Gladiator. My favorite historical fiction movies would have to be Dunkirk, Saving Private Ryan, Titanic, and Little Women (2019). I don’t have a favorite historical fiction book but I have 3 books of that genre on my list that I’m interested in reading which are “A Study in Drowning” by Ava Reid, “What the River Knows” and “Where the Library Hides” both by Isabel Ibanez.

As someone who has a degree in Ancient History and Classics, and loves Gladiator, this leaves me pretty damn unsure. Gladiator was less a film about the Roman Empire than it was about the then-modern state of all-consuming, maximalist entertainment for the masses. It worked on that level. What is this sequel's reason for existing? The problem with these kinds of legacy sequels to singlular films is that they capitalize on the film's genre and not lead to any similar films of the same genre. If it fails, you don't get more pulp adventure romps or sword & sandal epics...

That’s fair, aren’t you interested to see this period of Rome on screen though? The two emperors and what not?

@@TheStorytellersGuild1 Oh absolutely. My relationship with historical epics is pretty extensive. And its not just Gladiator that I love, there's also Ben-Hur, Quo Vadis, Cleopatra, Spartacus, Agora, and HBO's Rome. And the Ancient Greek epics from the star-studded like Troy to the stylized like 300. I even enjoyed Oliver Stone's final cut of Alexander! It's not lack of curiosity, especially about seeing Emperors Caracalla and Geta on screen, its just... has Scott still got that visual storytelling flair beyond simply putting historical settings on screen with varying degrees of accuracy? We'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, I completely agree! I have the same fears, but I’m happy with the cast and the two emperors, depending on how deep into the history they go will be very interesting.

I’m also happy to Pedro Pascal as a villain. I’m a bit tired of him tbh

I think we're all fascinated and excited by the roman empire because it's just a little bit fantasy like. A world so different from ours and yet the people are the same. Destruction, death, corruption it's all there. Alongside all the glory and kleos is the debasement of humanity too. The best and worst packaged in a fascinating backdrop of gold and silk and empires and honour. It's part of our history too. Something we can claim as 'real' and yet it's all far enough away that we don't take sides and break out into fighting and political messaging. We can finally see history as what it was - and embelish it a little for what it could have been.

Interesting how both the roman empire and the U.S use the eagle as a symbol

Why are you still running this channel and not White Noise Reacts. Can't you run both channels

Because I decided to move on from reacting and I’m working a full tile job as well as writing. So, sadly I just don’t have the time to do that
