“Lucius” is in fact a Roman name (Latin). Many of the names that JK Rowling took for the characters have a Latin or Greek origin. It is kind of shocking when you first read the books… There was a Roman emperor, Nero, whose first name was Lucius Domitius. And it is very interesting because it means practically the same as the name Lucifer… Did you know that this name meant “Light Bearer”? It is actually a beautiful name :)

@@midnighttoker9268 The Norsemen/Vikings actually WERE Germanic tribesmen who wandered further north into what is now Denmark and then also crossed over to the Scandinavian peninsula. You see remnants of this still today in our calendars - "Wednesday" comes from the Germanic "Wodenstag" - Woden's Day. Woden being the proto-version of the Norse mythology's Allfather, Odin/Oden. In Scandinavia, "Wednesday" is "Onsdag" - Oden's Day. So...calling those guys vikings is kind of half correct. In a manner of speaking. :) End of Historical Trivia Section!

@@lennyvalentin6485 By that standard you could call the Germanics Romans, and the Romans Greeks, and the Greeks Persian, the Persians Babylonian, the Babylonians Sumerian, hell you could just call all of them Sumerian, all of their cultures and mythologies were rooted from there, but none of that would be accurate, these were their own people, with their own cultures, territories, and own beliefs.

Two little nuanced moments I’ve always loved about the movie is the slap as a sister, and then the kiss as a subject, and when Maximus says “the time for honoring yourself will soon be at an end… Highness.” Caesar being the term used for the emperor, Maximus calling Commodus “Highness” means he still only sees him as nothing more than the child of a true emperor.

The actor with the scars on his face is name Tommy Flanagan. His facial scars are the result of a knife attack outside a nightclub where he had been working as a DJ. After leaving the club he was attacked by a gang, stabbed and slashed with a knife, leaving him with scars. The scars on his face are referred to as a Glasgow smile.

Trivia for Gladiator: 1. Released in 2000, directed by Ridley Scott (same director who did the first Alien movie and Black Hawk Down). 2. Gladiator won five Oscars in 2000 - Best Picture, Best Actor (Russell Crowe as Maximus), Best Costume Design, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound. It was nominated in seven other categories - Best Director (Ridley Scott), Best Supporting Actor (Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus), Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. Its five wins and twelve nominations were the most in each respective category that year. 3. Oliver Reed (Proximo) died three weeks before filming was finished, and so post-production forced some CGI effects and a body double to be used to replace him. Gladiator is dedicated to his memory. 4. His face is hard to realize, perhaps, but Richard Harris (Marcus Aurelius) played Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies, before he himself passed away while filming Prisoner of Azkaban. 5. Gladiator's success led to a brief revival of the genre known as "sword and sandal," usually epics of ancient Rome or Egypt. After the 1963 film Cleopatra went massively over-budget, and was known more for its behind-the-scenes issues anyway, the genre went stagnant for a long time. 6. Mel Gibson was originally offered the role of Maximus, but he turned it down, because he thought he was too old for it. 7. Connie Nielsen, who played Lucilla, was a Roman history buff, and the production crew consulted her a few times. 8. Since tigers are known to be difficult to train, it was surprising when those tigers actually were unfazed by the actors and crew. In fact, several of them had to be roused up when it came time to film their scene with Russell Crowe. 9. Before Richard Harris was given the role of Marcus Aurelius, Russell Crowe suggested Christopher Plummer; they had co-starred in the movie The Insider the previous year. Crowe was nominated for Best Actor three years in a row, with The Insider being his first, and Gladiator next, followed by A Beautiful Mind one year later. 10. Joaquin Phoenix is the younger brother of the late River Phoenix, who was seen on James' channel as Chris in Stand By Me and young Indiana Jones in Last Crusade.

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (26 April 121 - 17 March 180) was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD and a Stoic philosopher. He was a member of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, the last of the rulers later known as the Five Good Emperors and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace, calm, and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161. While on campaign between 170 and 180, Marcus wrote his Meditations in Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. The original title of this work, if it had one, is unknown. 'Meditations' - as well as other titles including 'To Himself' - were adopted later. He had a logical mind, and his notes were representative of Stoic philosophy and spirituality. Meditations is still revered as a literary monument to a government of service and duty. George Long's English translation of Meditations was included in Volume 2 of the Harvard Classics. It has been considered by many commentators to be one of the greatest works of philosophy. I 8

Ridley Scott is one of the biggest directors around, or at the time this film was made, as mentioned I think a lot of the budget was on production/CGI so the cast was a little on the budget side. Although Russel Crowe may demand a bit of money, and over recently years Joaquin Phoenix may need a few more dollars (has become more recognised for some good acting in numerous films, mainly 2019 Joker). A lot of the cast was British, actor and comedian Omid Djalili played the slave trader, a fair few of the politicians are British, how can I forget a British icon in Oliver Reed (stared in a real old Christmas film called 'Oliver). Maximus african warrior friend is Djimon Hounsou has appeared in a few films over the last 5 to 10 years. I believe Sven-Ole Thorsen who was the Gladiator legend (undefeated, wore silver armour) has a strong link to Arnold Schwarzenegger (from his body building days), and I think the same applies to Ralf Moeller (one of Maximus friends, big guy that cut his fellow gladiators hand off because he was dead). Sorry I am making a meal of this comment, so I will leave you to research the rest, if I have left anything for you to find out.

5:25 you mention the resources and cost to film scenes like this, and while usually a large amount, this wasn’t the case as much with this battle scene. The forest was scheduled to be cleared for fire prevention and land management by the government there on location. The production company was able to negotiate a deal with the government to clear this he land for them. This way they could film the battle and use the fire bombs catapulted into the trees. So the movie was able to save money of the location and helped the government by paying them for the use of the forest.

The gritty, high contrast, jumpy style of the fight scenes was something Ridley Scott pioneered for this film, though some people say it’s a rip off of the Wachowskis “bullet time” innovation in The Matrix a year or two earlier.
@lennyvalentin6485
@lennyvalentin6485 Жыл бұрын
As I recall, the initial battle scenes were shot with cameras set to high shutter speed - like you typically see in cable TV sports broadcasts of football matches (not meaning the US handegg variety here) and so on, which removes the film blur so typical of 24 frames per second photography. It's not really anything remotely like the "bullet time" scenes in "The Matrix", it just makes everything look really sharp (to simulate the adrenaline rush, I guess) and as a result, more stuttery, due to the low framerate of movie photography. I suppose someone unfamiliar with the technical details of how cameras and movie trick photography work etc might conceivably confuse the two tho... :) One must remember that the "bullet time" effect from the original matrix movie was a very analog process which required A LOT of setup, as it was shot using a combination of high-speed movie cameras and still picture photography. A highly dynamic, long battle sequence couldn't be done this way, it would take forever to shoot and cost way too much money.

Yes, bullet time used multiple cameras in a circle, all firing at the same time, allowing the camera to jump around in space time. The end effect of both was a jumpy action style that was new to film. Not the same, but similar in feeling. Both styles went on to influence most of the major action films that have come along since.

One of the best epics ever made. The real Commodus actually had incestuous relations with his sister and had children. And he did fight in the arena and yes he cheated and set up his appointments to lose.

Undoubtedly, the Roman Colisseum fulfilled a similar function as the gothic cathedrals did during the middle ages - they towered over the rest of the city, filling the little people with awe.

One thing that never made sense to me was how Maximus never made more of an issue that he was literally taken off his own land, made into a slave and forced into fighting. You would think he would've pushed back a bit more on that. Is that how they did things? What keeps them from making anyone they want into slaves?

Hiii! did anyone told you already that the actor who plays Proximo (Oliver Reed) aka Maximus "owner" died before the end of filming so in the moment when you see him died you actually seeing a cgi version of him.

Interesting fact. In Roman times, thumbs up meant death and thumbs down meant live, but the story got mixed up over the years to mean the opposite.

Nick Cave tried to write a sequel. It would have involved Maximus waking up in Elysium where he finds that the old gods are being overtaken by Christianity. So they send Maxiums to kill Jesus. Only Jesus tricks Maximus and sends him to earth in the body of a Christian martyr. He eventually becomes immortal with the end of the film being a montage of him fighting in every major war throughout history (Crusades, World War 1&2 Vietnam) with the final scene being him working for the Pentagon.

Vikings? LOL You literally JUST GOT DONE reading the text saying they're in Germania. Vikings are from much farther north. "How much time and money was spent?" You just read the text telling you that it was a 12-year campaign. "I'd rather die like the Emperor, in my 70s." In reality, Marcus Aurelius died at age 58. LOL

NOTICE TO EDITOR............ I bet you edit the reviews with either headphones or earbuds. In doing this you make the reviewer 2-5 times louder than the movie, when you finish. This makes it really difficult to watch and listen without headphones or earbuds. I wish you would go back and watch without headphones or earbuds to understand that not everyone is using them to watch. Just trying to pass on information. It might have more people watching than just clicking off. Because the volume is so far off. Regards Rollerball.
