I was in charge of the financial reporting for the MI franchise while working at Paramount from 1997-2006. This movie was huge when it came out, a highly anticipated continuation of the beloved 60s series. In the original series, Jim Phelps was a really honorable man, so a lot of people were upset that he was portrayed as the traitor. For the second film, to help with the up front budget, and so they could obtain the trendy, upcoming (in America) director, John Woo, TC took the SAG minimum salary of $56k in exchange for almost 50% of the backend profit. Two weeks after the film was released, we cut him a check for $52M. It was just a piece of paper, but it felt kinda surreal holding that much money in my hand. Had to get every studio executive on the lot’s signature/approval for that one. Saw offices I’d never been in before or since that day. Lol. MI:2 is a very stylized film, very much in John Woo’s directing style. A lot of people downright hate it. I actually like it a lot. The films get more and more ridiculous and outrageous as they go on…have to outdo the ones before. I actually don’t care for the ones past 3, but I also haven’t seen all of them.

This series is one of the greatest ever made. Showing someone this series is a lot like if you have an AMAZING family and you invite someone over for Christmas and you can't wait for them to meet everyone...except the second movie is that fun-loving zany over the top uncle you kind of feel like you have to apologize for to your guest in advance, even though you know your guest will secretly still love that uncle the same way you do.

This is the start to a (mostly) great series of movies that continues until today. This one I remember watching in cinema. Some great, memorable scenes. And an overall amazing cast with Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Jean Reno, Ving Rhames and Kristin Scott Thomas. If you enjoyed Jean Reno I strongly recommend the movie "Leon: The Professional". Also with a young Natalie Portman in her amazing debut and an equally great Gary Oldman.

As others have said, this entire series is absolutely incredible. You need to do all of them. The 2nd movie is a little slow and probably the worst of the series (and it's not awful), but everything really picks up and is phenomenal from MI:3 on.

Mission Impossible was a TV series back in the lste 60s to early 70s. The series was briefly rebooted in the 80s. This is the first movie in a long movie series that is still going. Mission Impossible 2 has a very different tone (more actiony, less "cerebral"), Starting with MI3 and going to the present (MI7, Part One came out last year, with part 2 expected May 2025) are the best with each one better than the last. From the 4th movie to the 7th, they follow a single plot (each movie still works alone, but they have the same characters/actors, and the stories connect). It is definitely a series worth checking out.
@bebop_5579 ай бұрын
Other espionage films that I would definitely recommend are Atomic Blonde which is a throwback to old espionage movies (a lot of the stunt guys from Atomic Blonde were also involved with John Wick). As well as The Killer Elite, the 1975 film. There's a 2011 Killer Elite movie which is way different, it's about dirty SAS operatives. The 1975 film is about expendable private contractors hired by the CIA to handle certain discreet matters for them.

Mission Impossible Movies In Order of Release Date Here’s every film in the Mission: Impossible movie franchise, in the order they were released in: Mission: Impossible (1996) Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) Mission: Impossible III (2006) Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015) Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018) Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

This 1996 movie was based on the 1966-1973 TV Series, and there are Seven more movies with one of them being filmed to be released in 2025. Tom eventually "owns" this franchise and does his own stunts later in his career. I.M.F. stands for Impossible Mission Force Fun Fact, Tom was made aware of another KZbin channel (Popcorn in Bed) when they were watching the 6th movie and invited them to the red carpet premier of Mission Impossible 7
@deckofcards877 ай бұрын
Hey James, you should react to the original TV series Mission Impossible. Peter Graves, Martin Landau, the original cast are legendary. It was made on the same CBS lott as Star Trek. Won tons of Emmys back in the 60s and the creator was a real ex-government operative, who based many of show's plots on real life operations. Basically they pull of elaborate cons using illusion and deception. The first two seasons are awesome 👌 The 1996 movie is the only one that sticks to the cerebral tone of the show, whereas the sequels are more or less action/stunt movies. The show was all about the team, whereas the movies are mostly centered on Cruise. And Jim Phelps was not a traitor in the series, he's a good guy.

The fact that John Woo was the director of the second movie in the series shouldn't be a coincidence. The hanging rope scene in the computer room is , believe or not, a scene ripped out of an old 70s HK comedy crime directed by him called Money Crazy (1977).

I absolutely love this franchise. The first is the most grounded and I love the flow of it. Yes, it's a bit dated with technology, but that happens. There are a *lot* of Mission Impossible movies. I personally feel the weakest of them all is #2. It's still a fun movie, but it's the most different of the bunch. But 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are great. The 8th comes out next year. I personally love 5 (Rogue Nation) and 6 (Fallout) the most. Hopefully you keep up with the franchise, but because there are so many it's one of those ones that you may not be able to get around to again for a while.

Wow you finally got to this series. Mission Impossible was a tv series back in the day and starred Peter Graves who also was the Captain in "Airplane", the silly funny spoof comedy. I unfortunately don't care for the next one which quite a few people also agree with. It's a shame because it starts out pretty good. Should still watch it if you're gonna go through the whole series which you should but it is the weakest of them all. Mainly because of the over the top direction, but after that they get way better. Jon Voight who you knew as the dad from "National Treasure' is in a cool movie called "Runaway Train" you may want to watch. Also Emilio Estevez who gets killed on the elevator is in a good buddy cop movie with Richard Dreyfus called "Stakeout". You would enjoy that also.

Before Peter Graves it was Arthur Hill. He did a great job coordinating the missions.... He had a difficult time with the shooting schedule interfering with Jewish holidays and Sabbaths and so stopped being in MI. Graves then took over that character.

Just to mention, NO ONE calls it 'the Chunnel'. We do like to shorten things but that one was too ugly to catch on. The most absurd thing about this film is not the constantly switching plots, the masks, the helicopter in the tunnel - but the thought that the UK could have a train that runs that fast. This is a great series and don't listen to anyone who tries to say that #2 is bad.
@markharris11259 ай бұрын
By the way, this was the first film, but there was a TV show that ran from 66-72. I've just discovered that there was a 2-season reboot in 1988. Was that ever shown in the UK? I've never heard of it but wouldn't mind trying to find it.

The smartest and best movie in the franchise. The Mission Impossible movies are based on a 60's tv show that had a sequel series in the 80's. This movie is the most loyal to the tv series (both 60 and 80) compared to the other movies. Fyi the original actor who plays Jim Phelps Peter Graves Rip refuse to play in this movie because what happen in this movie that is why Jon Voight plays in this movie. You should also see Jack Reacher and Sneakers.

This used to be an older television series. Tom Cruise has made it into his own personal "excuse" of a franchise to do all his own ri-DICK-ulous stunts. But nobody's really complaining, it's a wonderfully entertaining series that constantly keeps you guessing characters' loyalties, and you really come to love all the returning characters between each installment. There are 6 standalone films (parts 1-3 are called just that; afterwards they're given full subtitles), parts 7 & 8 tell one continuous story, and I believe that will be the end of the franchise...at least with Thomas the Cruise.
@lennyvalentin64859 ай бұрын
Interesting tidbit... The channel tunnel actually consists of two separate tubes for the most part of the distance - there's a couple crossover points along the way, but mostly the tunnel tracks are separated, for safety and other reasons. So you really wouldn't be able to fly a helicopter down the tunnel anyhow (as the main rotor wouldn't fit), even if it was aerodynamically possible, which I kind of doubt, especially in the slipstream of a high speed train barrelling down said tunnel. A little bit of movie magic there at work. But who cares, it's fun, and exciting. Action movies are meant to be an entertaining timewaste, not a marvel of scientific accuracy... :P

You are just going to waste your time and waste a reaction video for minimal views. It throws off the entire series. Just skip to 3 and you’ll have a lot more respect for the movies and you’ll finish them faster.

When, if, he gets to M:I2 I will be here defending it because I think it's a great film, with a charismatic villain, an entertaining plot, Anthony Hopkins ("This is not Mission Difficult, Mr Hunt"), self-destructing sunglasses, great car chases - and Thandie Newton is blinkin' gorgeous. The tension in the final minutes is twisted up to a level I've rarely seen in a film. Bad advice, @mofosoto
