He is from spain. Hence, "Spaniard." when he was describing his home to marcus, he said he was from "Tahillo", which is a region in spain.

@@okchristina For the first Caesar "Gaius Julius Caesar" it was actually a part of his name, a kind of hereditary nickname. None of the Caesars that followed him were his direct offspring, though "Augustus" who directly followed him was his adopted nephew, so it became a title taken by all the subsequent Emperors.

20:46 They were chained together as battle buddies - one with a shield for defense and one with a sword for offense. The better they worked together - the better chance they had at surviving. When they were testing them and marking them - that's when they were setting which would be shields (yellow) and which would be swords (red).

I just love this movie. I had to get the Hans Zimmer soundtrack to this because it's so perfect. The ending with Maximus going to Elysium to join his wife and boy always gets me. Yeah Commodus pursuing his sister was creepy, but probably common back then. Great reaction.

It is a good soundtrack. He definitely borrowed a few things from other composers, but it doesn’t mean it doesn’t sound great!! If you want to hear what inspired Zimmer, I recommend listening to The Planets by Gustav Holst. Specifically Mars, but the entire work is AWESOME!!!!!

So refreshing to hear a woman say she's interested in history, especially history movies. BUT BEWARE, Christina: movies are definitely NOT the best sources to base one's historical knowledge on. Hollywood does not follow history's true stories; Hollywood loves to "color outside the lines" a lot of the time! Screenwriters take many and deep liberties with actual history, twisting time lines, character traits, and true events to suit THEIR needs, which don't always include enlightening the viewing public. But continue on with your history-based movie watching; seems like you'll get a lot out of your efforts. Thanks for reacting to "Gladiator."

By the time of Marcus Aurelius Hispania (Spain) had been a Roman Province for hundreds of years so there were Romans living there for that amount of time. Maximus and his family lived in Spain, that’s why he is called the ‘Spaniard’.

Historical note, though this movie is mostly fictional, the story of Maximus was loosely based on the life of Marcus Nonius Macrinus who served as a general under Marcus, then Commodus. However, Marcus Nonius Macrinus actually ended up living a long life and dying a wealthy man, having never been sold into slavery. The real Commodus was also not a very moral man, and had an unhealthy adoration for the gladiator games...though he wasn't the worst Caesar ever, I believe that one is still a toss up between Nero and Caligula. Nero for ruthless brutality and Caligula for being a totally sick and twisted nut bag deviant. Regardless, I think this film is a masterpiece. It reminds me of big production films of the past, like Cleopatra with Liz Taylor and Richard Burton...huge epics that will always be a great watch.
