Um, Rome did learn some lessons along the way to become that empire... But listening to the expert wasn't one of them. By in large the experts which there were, you might call them commanders - largely took what they wanted to some extent. It was other innovations that made them great.

6:09 that tactic he did back there has been the classic strategy on how to defeat units like chariots and Elephants. Massed formations would form columns of men, hurling missiles upon the enemy chariots or the enemy Elephants. Examples of this tactic used are at Gaugamela by the Macedonian Hypaspists and the Agrianian skirmishers and at Zama by Roman legions and the Velites skirmishers of Scipio Africanus.

In the Battle of Zama, which the Romans, against all odds, win against not just a numerically superior army (50,000+ vs less than 40k) but one with dozens of thousands of strong veterans, I'm willing to lay the conjecture that the Carthagenians lost because their elite veterans were thinking more of their positions and prestige rather than working together as a team like Maximus inspired the slaves here to do. Just imagining that the Roman chariots, at the end of the battle, laying a curbstomp on those more worried about making the other guy look bad rather than survival... The Roman army had no choice but to work as a team or be annihilated. That's how they were able to sustain the brutal assault by Hannibal's armies. It may be a lesson that titles and names ultimately mean little. Anyone can become a solider. Not everyone can become a team player.

@Luke_Danger6 жыл бұрын
You know what the awesome thing about this is? It's basically a giant 'fuck you' from actual Rome to the mockery that Commodus created. Scipio would personally strangle Commodus for the mockery of his proud ROMAN legionnaires by portraying them as (female) chariot riding archers. They weren't - they were the old fashioned pre-Marian checkerboard of heavy foot and auxiliaries... among whom were the Triarii, old grizzled and nigh-unbreakable veterans whom acted as the reserve... of which Maximus' team resembles with their shields and spears. And so the "barbarian horde" in this mockery of a recreation better resembles the actual Roman army that fought and won at Zama, is the one that destroys the mockery of the actual army. Which really works on a subtle symbolic level - for all the liberties the movie took (like portraying pila as thrusting spears), it still manages to nail certain things incredibly.
@fighterck62416 жыл бұрын
I guess the point was to create an unassailable advantage for the "Romans" by giving them and easily predictable advantage, ie chariots. Commodus wanted to "recreate" a great victory, but it's difficult to do so by simply putting the gladiators out there and telling the "Carthaginians" to lose (ie die on purpose). So he gave the "Romans" chariots and placed the side that was supposed to lose on foot. This ended up backfiring miserably because one of the gladiators on the ground was an actual Roman general and several of the "barbarians" were former soldiers who understood what Maximus wanted to do. Yes it's ironic from a historical perspective that Commodus got the actual tactics more or less reversed, but the crowd weren't historians and would hardly have cared. He just wanted to create a spectacle for them to cheer the glory of their empire even if it was based on a lie or at best a faulty interpretation of their history. All that mattered to him and the crowd is that the right side won. Propaganda at it's finest.
@dynojones6 жыл бұрын
Nailed it bro, the demographic of the 'barbarians' is fucked up - it also i think is meant to show the over confidence/arrogance of Commodus and the fact he has no idea what to do, that and Maximus is a don of a leader
@mikec80866 жыл бұрын
Also most cavalry the Romans used in that era were contracted from local areas. Celtics and gallic people were used, some of the most famous were the namidian cavalry that switched sides after Hannibal didn't enter rome and had to go back. Those namidian cavalry had previously forced the battle of cannae to play out like it did.

This movie's 20 years old. I've watched it one zillion times. But Maximum is by far, IMO, the most admirable and formidable character ever put to screen.

One of many excellent scenes from an excellent movie. Maximus doesn't waste any time putting his leadership skills to the test to flip what would have been a one-sided exhibition match into a slaughter. All of the "main" slaves have character development here, too; Juba's ferocity and skill with spears, Hagan's strength and speed blocking an arrow, Proximo's glee seeing his gladiators emerge victorious against impossible odds.

A legendary film that is not always repeated. You watch it up to 20 times and never get bored. Creativity in directing and performance, but the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer gave the film great greatness.

Love this scene, and espeacially after when the emporer asks Cassius, "correct me if im wrong, but I dont remember the barbarians being the victors of that war", of which he could only answer, "uhh - no, your majesty" ..... great pic worth every minute watchin it, got me interested reading plutarch and herodotus and thucydides, tacitus, a bit of Aeschylus, absolutely enlightening and enjoyable (if you like reading ancient history). Edit: Thanks for Posting!

Proximo told Maximus that he had to win the crowd if he wanted to be the best gladiator, and Maximus did it so well... It is amazing to see the change, in my opinion, even in Commodus preferred side during the battle, from 4:32 to 6:21. Commodus at 4:32: "WelI, I didn't expect to see this and I'm not sure if I liked it" Commodus at 6:21: "Yesss, wish I could drink her blood!!!!" lol

At 2:23 Maximus asks "Amyone been in the Army" and he recieves a reply "I served with you at Vindobona". Maximus's identity wasn't revealed yet in the movie but this guy knew all about him and said nothing to anyone?
@infinitlycool5 жыл бұрын
Even if he did what difference would it make? As far as Rome was concerned Maximus was already dead and no one else would have really cared. Maximus was practically on his own at this point and anything that guy said wouldn't have helped except make things worse.

I think that was a little touch that served as a testament to how much Maximus was respected by his soldiers. He knew who he was but assumed that something greater than what he understood was happening, and so he just quietly supported him.

Fun fact. This never would have happened. The gladitorial combat in reality was much less brutal. Gladiators had to be trained, housed, fed and kitted out with weapons and armor and otherwise cared for. It was FAR too expensive to regularly kill them like this. They actually fought more like WWE than murderers. The idea was to cut your opponent in the arms or legs, or even just wrestle them. People rarely died in combat, more so from accidents. They were kinda like boxers with really s**tty contracts

I think the last one dying had the worst death ever: imagine being desperate to survive and then you get grabbed from behind and dragged off your Chariot, while thousands of people are joyful because they like seeing you dead. Then you look up and see a bunch of people that you have never hurt in anyway, but still they want to kill you so bad, and acknowledging you're harmless, you just hope in a merciful miracle, but then that one soldier smashes his shield on you, while others around are still so excited about it.
@redfox8514 жыл бұрын
Marco T I always thought the woman who was cut in half had the worst death. Everyone seeing her cut in half I’m sure she didn’t die immediately. She probably had a couple of mins of agonizing pain to see everyone else die while she laid their half and everyone was cheering because of how she was sliced
@FimbongBass4 жыл бұрын
yeah I always think about the ''miracle'' that most people on the verge of death must feel, they are hoping, something or someone will save them last second, i'm sure almost every human must have felt that way at some point in times of war or disease but most of those people will not get that miracle, most will die rather ''pathetically'' or at least not with the glory they were hoping for and its scary to think about, we like to think of ourselves as special and not like the rest but war completely destroys the young man syndrome and makes you realize that your destiny is technically to lay dead in the dirt and its up to you to try and leave a legacy or not
@ronaldojohnny77747 ай бұрын
@@redfox851 agreed the woman sliced in half had the worst death. i think one of the woman archers who crashed into the gate survived since her horses flipped her chariot but then you can barely see her rolled over after the chariot was jumped. She of course, had armor so that saved her most likely, if not, the other guards by the gate probably killed her or imprisoned her to serve in the next game. Guards normally don't killed gladiators and/or waste their lives unless they try to escape, do a revolt/rebellion and/or commit a crime. Unless I am completely wrong, but then the Romans themselves were savages in a "ciivilized society."

Maximus turned a bunch of unorganized gladiators into a disciplined fighting force... This is why you always need an experienced and tactically competent general in your army to ensure your troops don't lose morale at the first sign of trouble and route from the field, with a general like Maximus they held firm.
@ryan78645 жыл бұрын
True in a broad sense...however, Roman Commanders were rarely the reason for Roman success. It was their professional training, rigid discipline and primarily the Centurions that delivered success.
@Bullet-Tooth-Tony-5 жыл бұрын
@@ryan7864 But it's the commanders like Julius Caeser and Scipio Africanus who were at the helm of the armies, an army can't function efficiently without leadership, it's the commanders who order them into battle and employ the tactics and strategies for the troops to follow. At the Battle of Yarmouk the Byzantine army was better equipped but was poorly commanded and as a consequence they lost the battle against a competent general ( Khalid) this highlights the importance of leadership. Napoleon as another example the man in your picture, what would the French army have been without his genius? Wellington admitted his presence alone was worth 40,000 men. Notice how the French lost battles when Napoleon wasn't on the battlefield despite their professional training and discipline ( Battle of Maida, Battle of Alexandria,Battle of Waterloo) An army of lions led by a lion is better than an army of lions led by a sheep.
