Thank you for this interview. I can't wait to watch the film next month. Denzel is my favorite actor, and Ridley is one of my favorite filmmakers. 🗡⚔️🗡⚔️🗡⚔️

Denzel Washington is a great actor. His accent in this film is so distracting. I don't see and hear a Roman oligarch, I seen and hear a guy from someplace in New York. Somewhere on the East Coast who does an awesome job playing criminals, tough guys, attorneys, cops, assassins,...he did such a great accent playing Stephen Biko...they couldn't make him more classical for this?

That's bullshit. It's NOT distracting AT ALL. People who say this tend to anticipate hive-mind negativity. Roman accents weren't regionally British or vaguely Received Pronunciation, like 99% of the accents in this film and all historical dramas--but people instil a cultural bias that British linguistics are the superior baseline or possess a universality that all cultures can and should cinematically adhere to--which ultimately is prejudice in its most microagressive form. "Making him sound more classical" is actually absurd. I don't remember complaints about Joaquin Phoenix sounding like a Chicagoan used car salesman as Napolean. Denzel is so utterly dazzling, charismatic, and intelligent as Macrinus that his accent is utterly subsumed by the hypnotic rhythm, persuasive cadence, and crafty power of his delivery. It's quite astonishing how he pulls it off. His portrayal as Steve Biko was perfect for a film released in 1987 of events that mostly focused ten years prior in 1977. Cry Freedom's verisimillitude was extremely necessary at a time where Apartheid hadn't even ended yet.

Fred Hechinger is extraordinarily inarticulate for an actor.

He seems sweet and without much media training. I'm sure he'll improve. 😆
