Man, i never understood the beauty of this opening when watching as a kid. the sudden cut from him walking through a warm place touching the wheat to the windy, cold, germania showing maximus' deep yearning for home, but also foreshadows that his ultimate return to peace and family will only come through death, because in the ending we see it's actually the elysium. Also i love him watching the bird fly away. he is bound by duty, honor, and the expectations placed on him as a general, where the bird embodies for the liberty he craves. what a shame ridley could not recreate this magic with the sequel.

My dad, who is in poor health, told me that when he was in Vietnam that he would sometimes dream of being home and would wake up in the dirt with tears in his eyes. When I worked in the oilfield I'd dream of waking up at my dads house with the smell of pancakes and eggs that he used to make. I would have a tear in my eye.

This is what makes me value this movie - 00:42 - because think of this. He's not excited about whats coming. Hes confronting the very real possibility of dying in the next few minutes. Hes remembering his family with sadness that he may not see them again. And yet, something catches his eye. A bird. The bird is beautiful and fragile and simple. It brings him a fleeting moment of pleasure about the beauty of the world before heading into the hell of battle. Such a unique brief moment.

Saw the sequel and it makes me only cherish scenes like this even more! They tried to match the "epic" scale of this battle in the sequel, but it came nothing close to it. In the 3 minutes you have with Maximus before the battle, you got so much more taken away from that than the few you got with Lucius other than he had a wife and that's it. Here in the three minutes, you see how much his misses his home, him cherishing the "peace" like a bird flying away before the eve of battle, how the soldiers respect him, showing command & calmness with his top generals before the battle, and him being fully cognizant of the situation once he hears the Germanic tribes shouting once they see the messenger's horse coming back.

I legitimately have just copied and pasted this for the 5th time in the last 10 minutes. because once again, it's nonstop with you people..... There is quite literally a film called Gladiator 2 in theaters, as I speak. Love the generic comments in every comment section of movies who most enjoyed. Every single fucking one is full of "They don't make movies like this anymore," or "I wish there were movies this good, but since "woke Hollywood democrats....." and shit like that You commented that for a single reason....Likes. That's all. You know it, and I know it Edit: That wasn't a political statement on my part, whatsoever. It's nothing more or less than a type of comment I've seen over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.....and it's always said regarding a film that has absolutely no political undertones, of any kind.
