Why do you think so? I know this is just a fictional movie but seriously it wasn't for Maximus leadership and majority of the Gladiators that cooperated with him, I'm pretty sure they all would have perished right there, the only gladiators that perished are the ones that were individualistic, except for the last two, but what I found insulting is the Gladiator that wasn't part of the group they got shot by an arrow and rescued by a Maximus is now given orders, I'm assuming he redeemed himself.

One of my most watched scenes ever and I have two favorite parts: 1) 1:50 "Hold, hold, DIVE IN!" this scores Maximus's squad their first tactical victory. Up until then he'd done a great job of organizing their defense, but they still need to score hits and kills to win the battle. I can imagine how the conversation went inside the turtle formation. Maximus: "ok everyone, the chariots are getting closer but that also means they're more exposed. Try to time a hit on the weak point of the chariot- the wheel. After the horse gallops by, I'll signal the attack and you guys try to hit the wheels with your shields". And you know that they had time while defending in the circle so this is totally plausible. Then to have the nerve to actually dive for the attack under a chariot is commendable too, but it's easier if you trust your teammates at that moment which is why cohesion is so important. Masterclass in leadership. 2) 2:10 this is such a small detail I didn't notice it for years! The friggin' MVP javelin thrower scores the second tactical victory for Maximus because when he hits the chariot driver, it starts a chain of events which disables this chariot and makes it knock into another one, also disabling it- so basically that one javelin throw scored 2 chariot and 5 enemy kills. After that, the numbers are balanced enough wherein Maximus's troops can organize more aggressive tactics such as laying the trap. But I can also imagine how the conversation in the turtle went. Maximus: "alright, who here throws a good javelin?" This dude: "I think I can". Maximus: "alright, you hide in the middle of the circle with javelin ready, and if you see a good shot, take it". And thus it went, behind every good play is good team preparation. Another masterclass in teamwork.

The deep subtle irony casual poked at is under Commodius, things are exactly opposite of how they're suppose to be. Scipio's legions were dishonored, exiled veterans while Hannibal's forces were seen through an Exotic African lens. Considering the gladiators matched closely to zama legionary times, flip flopping the names of the two opposing forces would have made this whole battle scene make sense.
