I was a teenager when this song came out. The marvelletts were fierce, with many hits. A lot of times the flip side of record was a hit 2.

I was a long time member of The Doo Wop Society of Southern California. We finally had to call it quits because so many of these great performers lived back east and as they got older it was hard to get them to travel so far for a concert...really sad to have to have let the club go! The number Beechwood-45789 was really 234-5789 (23-45789)...is anyone out there old enough to understand why this was the real number???
@jamielabadia7596 Жыл бұрын
Sure do Cliff!!! Telephones would have letters groups associated with the numbers. To make it easier to remember the first two exchange numbers, they would often give it a word name. The first two letters of the word would contain letters from the first two numbers' associated letter group. (except of course Q, which was used in telegraphy and teletype signaling.) "Pennsylvania 6-5000 is another example. Growing up in Schenectady, our "exchange" word was Excalibur. (39x-xxxx) Brother,.....do I feel ancient.

So sad that such a great voice was not acknowledged by the group that gave Motown its first hit. One big slap in the face was not even putting them in the Motown Museum in New York. The other one was not inviting them to the 25th Anniversary of Motown. So many slaps in the face. But that was just two. Also Motown bought their name or copyrighted it and tried to put a Marvelettes group with none of the members! Talk about slaps in the face! I love the Marvelettes and remember grooving to their songs. They had so many hits. I loved The Hunter Gets Captured B The Game. I also loved My Baby Must Be A Magician, but there were so many other ones like Too Many Fish In the Sea. I loved their themes too, so real to life. I also loved Danger Heartche Straight Ahead. Gordy could have put them on the Dick Clark Show if he wanted to, th same way he put the Supremes up there, same with Ed Sullivan.

Sad but true, these girls (the Marvelettes were among one of the more talented groups along with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. However the Marvelettes were one of the most neglected groups that Motown had during that time. Shame!!!!
@jackjules75523 жыл бұрын
I don't see that Motown neglected them. Smokey Robinson even gave them a second wind of stardom when he started writing and producing for them in the mid-sixties. They always had songs on the charts no matter how low they charted. They went from having five to four and then to three members and yet they continued on. However, they could have made more TV appearances but they made but few appearances on national TV. I don't think they were even invited to be on the Ed Sullivan Show as most of the other Motown groups had been. They were not invited to appear on Shindig either. I think the death knell was when Gladys Horton decided to leave the group in 1967 reducing the group down to two members. An unknown singer became the third member, the first member who was not an original member. Gladys, who was the original lead singer kept the group balanced and was able to keep the group focused. However, after Gladys left, Wanda became a problem with her alcohol and drug addictions and Motown just wrote them off. Even Gladys admitted in interviews that the Marvellettes were not as versatile as the Supremes and did not sound good singing all those show tunes that the Supremes incorporated into their nightclub act.
@sirblack16192 жыл бұрын
@@jackjules7552 I disagree with saying that the Supremes were very versatile. The Supremes could not handle Soul and R&B music which by 67 was topping the charts. Wanda's voice definitely fit Soul and R&B music. The Marvelettes were neglected by Motown despite having great material. How did they not get to do Shindig nor Ed Sullivan when Don't Mess with Bill was a huge hit? Motown did not push their material as much as they did the Supremes after they had their first #1 hit. Management did not do right by them either. But at the end of the day The Marvelettes were an amazing group with two lead singers, distinct soulful sound, dance moves that wowed audiences and were very beautiful. Which is why I will take them over any other act on Motown.
