What an honor! The legendary Empress of Soul, Gladys Knight blessed our Shade 45 studio with her presence and gems. With over 50 years of a soulful career, she told us stories that we have never heard before.
Like the time Diana Ross kicked her off her tour as an opening act because she was too good! Or singing "Heard it From the Grapevine" before Marvin Gaye did. She even spoke about her Mother putting together Gladys Knight & the Pips group and earning $10 at their first gig.
There was so much good energy in the room, that Sway had to call his Mother and share his excitement for having this legend as a guest on his show!
Ms. Gladys Knight has been around since the 50's, but transitioned so well through the decades and shifts of music, she explained that that was because her parents "never allowed us to have one kind of music," encouraging her and her siblings to listen and be inspired by other genres.
Watch above and catch her on tour with The O'Jays!

Sway is another one who needs an award of some sort. He's so great for the culture. His interviews, this one specifically, is always conducted with such class. Love his mother talking to Gladys, you can tell he where he gets his interviewing skills and musical knowledge from (as well as his own hard work and merit). Gladys has the hits, License to Kill and If I Were Your Woman are my favourites.

@@gracegreen1859 You are allowing mainstream to determine who and what you feel are standards. They promoted Diane because she was closer to what they uphold as talent and beauty. Why do you think Barry told Gladys to stop touring? Whoever in power can make standards in all area of activity. The area of entertainment is control by certain individuals in power. Wake up out your matrix. My mother is an elderly woman but Keke is a super star to her and she holds Keke in high regards. However, I do not think she has a clue about who zendaya is. I can assume you have certain standards of beauty as well because you have allowed yourself to be brainwashed to accept what is promoted to you.

Gladys deserved better. She was (still is) old school when it came to the gimmicks and drama in the music business. That's why she never sold her soul or sleep her way to the top. She is a true icon. Motown birthed icon after icon. You'll never see that level of artistry ever again.

00FA Not taking anything anyway from Ms. Diana Ross but she was most definitely what little black girls could look up to in the mainstream entertainment world (Dionne Warwick did it for pop music, until her cousin came along and blew everyone out of the water.) back in the late '60s, early '70s and the '80s. She, in Berry's eyes, was his vision of what black entertainment should be at that point in time. Just as Josephine Baker was the first black superstar to do it on a worldwide level unheard of back in the '20s and '30s. Diana followed suit. Diana is to Gladys what Beyoncé is to Mary J. And I'm super fan of Mary J. because Mary showed time and time again that her testimony was real and she was looked as a hero for the young girl growing up in the ghetto during hip-hop's renaissance in the mainstream. Josephine Baker, Dorothy Dandridge, Eartha Kitt all preceded Diana, and people like Tina Turner, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé came through and found success because of Diana. Although that can be widely debated. Gladys is very underrated, and her classic music from the '70s and '80s are just as strong now as they were then. Diana is a great performer, but Gladys is most definitely one of the best SINGERS in R&B music history.

+David Richardson then you don't understand show business. Gordy was interested in one thing..making $$. @ that time no one was bigger than DR and Gordy was correct in his assessment that DR launching the Jackson 5 would be far more successful than Gladys doing so. Gordy was right. Don't blame DR for Gordy's business decision. # 2 Gladys was one thing a soul singer. DR was far superior as an artist with world wide multi genre appeal. The same appeal Gordy wanted for the Jackson 5.. and that's exactly what he got.

This is *legendary* right here. Somebody that has a catalog of classic and timeless music and somebody that can sing like no other. It seems like everybody can still sing from her era. Meanwhile, these 80's and 90's "legends" can't do anything. Let's face it, Miss Ross couldn't blow like Patti and them, but she did what she could.

What a fun interview! Great job, Sway and team. I'm 54 and Gladys was my first celebrity crush when I was in 6th grade. I would say she taught me what SOUL music was all about. In fact, when people would ask what do you wanna be when you grow up, for a time my answer was an immediate "a PIP"! Have followed her all along since then: bought the music, went to the live shows when I could and she's as strong, wonderful and beautiful as she was back then. Grateful to have grown up in a time with the music of Ms. Knight. On and on, Miss Gladys, on and on.

MyAmysBad You know damn well you said Diana Ross played Josephine Baker and I was not the only one who checked you on this. I don't have the time to find your post because most likely you deleted it after being checked on it by most likely several people after I posted my comment.

Gladys Knight --- still the amicable, classy, down-to-earth music legend five years later (2021). Still listening to her wonderful music and STILL enjoying it! Thank you Ms. Knight for decades of "real" songs with lyrics that listeners of every generation can relate to.

Gladys is the ultimate R&B/soul singer. 💖 Diana was just great with the Supremes 💖

I feel like Diana was only great with The Supremes is because she had her damn way and Berry Gordy allowed it and she was screwing him, although he was already a married man. To be honest, Florence and Mary could sing way better than her, but Berry kept his side piece in the forefront.

@@sufundasamuels2313 TBH they had stronger voices than Diana but she had the crossover voice that made them mega Stars 🤩 if any of the other 2 ladies was lead singer don't think they would have had Pop crossover success.....

This video made me cry!! I am looking at the tissue as I write. The part when they talk about "save the overtime for me" it brought me to tears. That's my one of my favorite Gladys Knight song, I love her, and her songs are tattooed into my soul. Gladys Knight if you can read this, I love you and thank you for your music. It has followed me where ever I have been on this planet. I love this video.

My mother was a GK&P fan, so I grew up on her - Empress is right. And I liked her version of "Heard It Through the Grapevine" better than Marvin Gaye's. Yes, I said it.

Gladys Knight is a classic example of what happens when you mix gospel with rhythm and blues. Aretha did the same thing. I have always liked Gladys' version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" better than Marvin's.
