Notice what's third in the mix through the whole song, right after the lead and backing vocals. That marvelous, juicy bass line by Bob Babbitt, just after he left Motown. Its own countermelody. So well crafted that it just blends right in and melds everything else, unless you think about it you might not even think it's there!

One of my favorite songs of all time. Did you know that Gladys and the Pips recorded Heard it Through the Grapevine a year or so before Marvin Gaye's version. They make his sound like a lullaby. So R&B. So gospel. So renaissance funk. So fun. And sure to get your body and feet moving like few songs can do. Please comment on their version. Reply

@@galaxyjams alamoe62's comment isn't really an opinion, it is a fact. It was recorded after the group left Motown and were at Buddha Records and was written in Mississippi by Jim Weatherly, who had nothing to do with Motown. He originally wrote it as country song titled Midnight Train to Houston. He then had Cissy Houston record it in '71 changing Houston to Georgia. That version can be found here on KZbin. The only former Motown "Funk Brothers" musician on this track was bassist Bob Babbit, who had left Motown when Gordy moved from Detroit to Los Angeles in 1972. There might have been a horn or two that was former Motown, not sure. The entire album was recorded in NJ and NY.
