The “trendy” houses now look so dated and would need to be renovated to keep them current while the traditional homes are so much more timeless and still look great decades on.

The second couple is smart. The interest rate on their student loans was probably much higher than the mortgage so good for them for paying those loans off! And they’ve decided to put their money towards buying vs renting at a reasonable cost.

I would love to be a neighbor of Amy and Tacky. They seem marvelous! (EDIT: I wrote my comment before I was finished watching this episode and saw a quick shot of A&T walking out of a room, placing their arms around each other. I actually gulped a tear away. They are as Phil just described them [37:26] and it's easy to enjoy their charm and common sense.)

Personally, for the younger couple, i would have gone for the shared ownership flat. Yes, it would have taken longer to own it but at the end, i would still own it. It takes a lot to fill out a rigorous application for something & you are successful, that indicates one is meant to have that. It's location, those views of the river, being brand-new and two bedrooms made it a better option for me than the one they eventually bought. For the other couple, that 1st house was the one i would have chosen. It had great potential, just needed a little reconfiguration..
@ginacrusco234
@ginacrusco234 Жыл бұрын
Buyers like Tony are overly influenced by the current state and staging of the houses they view. Sometimes you have to look past the presentation and envision a house's potential. Then you can say "wow" to the way you know it can be. For example, the first property they viewed was really quite good and probably would have needed less alteration to come up to their standard than the one they finally chose. And they would have had 75k in their budget to work with.

Student loans were £3k a year back then and 100% mortgages were available, wow. We've really been screwed over. They make £50k combined, do you think anyone their age now on £25k could pay off their £9k a year student loans while saving £25k minimum for a mortgage? Do you think that flat is still £250k? Lol, they definitely sold that flat for twice the price once they were ready to buy a house lmao. Watching this in 2024 fills me with resentment lol.

Wow watching this in the context of the subprime mortgage crisis and financial crash of 2008 (this is all before, when 100% mortgages and repayments of over 50% of the household income were deemed acceptable) is crazy. I hope they held their nerve when they inevitably fell into negative equity and came out the other end with a little bit to never get into that type of debt again.

@anneavenell3691
@anneavenell3691 11 ай бұрын
Shared ownership schemes are quite common in the UK. As time goes on you can increase your ownership (as & when your finances permit) until you eventually own the whole property. Different schemes have different options though so it all needs to be checked out before you buy. Several friends of mine purchased homes this way. For two of the couple’s, when they came to sell they had to offer the home back to the scheme first. If the scheme didn’t want it they were then able put it on the open market.
@aniajagla6032
@aniajagla6032 11 ай бұрын
@@anneavenell3691 hi. Thx. And so what happens if you decide to sell midway, do you sell on same basis only? or die leaving unpaid house. Is this inheritable? Do you know anyone who lives this way? Are they reccommending it?
@anneavenell3691
@anneavenell3691 11 ай бұрын
If you sell midway then you may have to give first refusal to the scheme. If they don’t won’t to buy it back you can sell it on the open market. You receive whatever percentage of the same price you own. So if you own 25% you’ll get 25% of the same price etc. It worked really well for my friends. They were able to increase their portion of the ownership as and when they could afford it. Without shared ownership they’d never have got on the housing ladder. I don’t know anyone who has died while in a S/O scheme but just had a quick look on Google and it appears that the deceased’s beneficiary would inherit the portion of the property that the deceased owned. As said previously, a lot depends on the original scheme, not all are the same.
