Ugh I became a victim of the Jheri curl in the Kindergarten (which just happens to be the same year my sister got her cosmetology license 😣). I got delivered from that sin & shame around 4th grade when she started giving me regular perms (equipped with scalp sores of course). I really thought that was a way of life until I went to college. I started transitioning but that is a tough process so I started perming only about 2 times a year. Then, I convinced myself that I really didn’t need the chemicals since my hair broke off regularly. The healthiest head of hair I’ve ever had is now at 40, where I wash, condition, and place in a protective style (braids usually). Periodically, I pull out the old-fashioned straightening comb. But it’s not a need-I love my natural hair and its struggles. After all, it is healthy. BTW: I GOT MY GLAM FAM T-SHIRT! 🤗🤗🤗

@GetGlamFam
@GetGlamFam 4 жыл бұрын
A lot of stylists don’t do them correctly, primarily because you don’t learn how to texturize hair in cosmetology school. The only thing they teach about black hair, honestly, is how to manipulate it straight by pressing or relaxing. There are a few schools that dive deeper, but not many. I’m working hard on this channel to try and help out with that, but babayyyyy! It’s work lol! And for the sake of healthy natural hair, I’m glad the texturized didn’t work too! Blessing in disguise huh? 😉

Thank you! Yes! Reading is fundamental! I tell my clients all the time, they’ve been saying for years that if they wanted to hide something from us, they’d just put it in a book, marketers appear to have that same ideology. They just put it in smaller writing on the back or the side of the box. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I appreciate you! ❤️❤️

I already been doing my natural hair myself so I'm not suffering more than most. The worst thing is that I really need a profession trim because my hair is tangle city and uneven. But it does not look bad at all because I know how to care for it and I do not dye it. As I was French braiding it today I was thinking how dense it was getting. I have 4c hair. Curly coily kinky dense hair hides a multitude of sins.

Taking msm helps make your hair softer. Use conditioners that soften hair. This may sound weird but I used a beard softener on my hair because it was so coarse but it worked over time. You might also want to try using a detangling spray combing your hair in the shower might be helpful as well.

I've been struggling with it daily for the past 8 months. 3 days ago I texturized it. Had I seen this video before that, I'd never have decided to do it. I was looking for greater managability. Sodium hydroxide (near the top, not the bottom of the list) many things have it, including toothpaste and all natural soaps, but it’s neutralized and in smaller amounts. My hair is too sensitive for perms and texturizures I use to get them because I thought I could easily manage may hair by using chemicals to change the texture but I noticed I would experience hair breakage and scalp burns so I stopped using it. I still havent found a way to manage my nautral hair so I usually just wear wigs. Natural stylist are hard to find.... I have to figure out more natural products to use to get curls. My hair is 4c hair which is very course. I'm ready to go natural just not short what to do with my hair.

So why are we always shamed about taking the route towards having more manageable hair? People of other ethnicities apply chemicals to make their hair less frizzy, etc yet they aren’t shamed into thinking their hair is any less natural.
@GetGlamFam
@GetGlamFam 3 жыл бұрын
That typically comes from within the community. Now that being said, if you are perceiving this video to be shaming anyone, you would be incorrect. If relaxing your hair makes you happy, and you can keep it healthy, you’ll hear no qualms from me. The concern I have is when people are lied to and manipulated into putting a relaxer into their hair under the guise of it being a different chemical that is “more gentle.” A texturizer is no more gentle than a relaxer, and if someone does get one, they need to increase deep conditioning and care to ensure their hair is not breaking off, dried out, or damaged. I hope that helps clear any possible miscommunications. Thanks for watching!

@@GetGlamFam I didn’t really say you were shaming, but our culture definitely does. I want to get a smoothing treatment and my mother in law went nuts. I’ve been without a perm for 12 yrs, however my hair is extremely thick and tangles easily. A lot of fine hairs. Silk presses don’t last due to the porosity. People go nuts if you say you want more manageable hair. Most hair products contain sodium hydroxide. We all are putting some kind of chemical in it.
@GetGlamFam
@GetGlamFam 3 жыл бұрын
For some reason the culture, especially the natural hair community does that a lot. I will say, make sure that you are selective and well informed on the kind of smoothing treatment you select. Some require 450 degrees of heat, others you can do with as little as 385. Some are more of a straightener, and others just make straightening and blow drying easier when styling, and lightly loosen your curl. There are tons on the market to select from 😊

I didn't know that about texturizers. I thought of them more as a step before a jheri curl. And I wondered if they were what I'd heard my mother talk about male black celebrities getting in the 60's? I think she called it a "process". If you look at early pictures of the "Temptations", Little Richard and Chuck Berry and even Nat King Cole you'll see what I'm talking about. I've been natural since 2013. I haven't put anything in my hair to help chemically manipulate it. But I did use a product that I was told was a good detangler. And for some reason I ended up having a sore spot in the back of my head. And that was one of my issues with relaxers. It didn't matter who did them, if they put oil or whatever on my scalp beforehand or not. No matter what they did I'd end up with at least one sore spot in the back of my head just above where my hairline ended. And that area would be sore for a week or two. I now wonder if this is an allergic reaction to something? But I'm not sure what chemical or ingredient would cause that.
@GetGlamFam
@GetGlamFam 4 жыл бұрын
I had a client that had a spot in her head that was hyper sensitive like that, turns out it was a spot of psoriasis in her instance, so back when she was getting relaxers, they would always burn in that one spot. As far as the “process” question, that term is commonly used for any chemical treatment in the hair, some likely had curl reformers, but many back then wore relaxers and wetsets, such as finger waves and rollersets. Some did press and curls as well.

@@WeezyJeffersonYo I thought that was their actual hair texture. Even now Diddy, Usher and Nelly seem to have the same hair texture as they did back then. But it's possible that they have something in their hair. So I'm not ruling that out.
