The faces that you're making during the chord changes reminds me of myself every time I listen to this. How can you not--it's pure joy. The progressions are so unconventional, yet sound inevitable, once you've heard them. Nice job on copping the changes.

Donald Fagan and Walter Becker were such clever composers They are up there with the likes of Burt Bacharach and George Gershwin in my humble opinion and the musicians they used were ridiculously talented.

This (Glam P) sounds foreign to any 16 year old who listens to pop radio(Taylor Swift, Cardy B, etc.) because it's very complex and nuanced. Jazz and groove literacy is ZERO among our youth. And when this age group writes music it, sounds like the middle school marching band(mostly). So simple. All four on the floor, shouting and chanting in 4 part unison. Sad. My twenty-something child agrees.
@MrSteelyDaniel3 жыл бұрын
@@roundtownKen I consider myself lucky to appreciate the chord nuances and structure, but think that mainstream pop, such as those you mention, is liked by many, not just 16 year olds. I don't think there's nothing inherently wrong with catchly little pop tunes, but for me, why would you want to eat just baked potato all your life when there are thousands of different tastes, textures and flavours out there? I'm 46 and I'm still discovering new music every day (Hippocampus Serenade) new genres, new styles, hell, even new instruments from artists/groups young and old, from all over the world. As far as young people are concerned, have a listen to Jacob Collier, his understanding of reharmonization, dissonance, microtonality and polyrhythms, which are all relatively uncommon concepts in pop music, is amazing. He rewrites the musical rule book and who is also (unsurprisingly) a huge Steely Dan fan. Because of his experimental, out of the box thinking about music, his delivery technique and methods, his fan base is attracting many of those 16 year olds who perhaps now have a real appreciation for musical technique and theory outside the mainstream pop bubble.
@alexterwilleger55808 ай бұрын
@@roundtownKenYou need to realize the survivorship bias around the pop charts. Do you think this song was a hit? Was it a number one single that played on every radio station? No, and it doesn’t need to be. My point being that you ONLY know about this song because it’s from your era, and you refuse to look for any new music, so you immediately discount anything that’s new because it’s “not the same” anymore. The truth is that the radio is dead and you aren’t getting spoonfed good music anymore, you have to make an actual effort to find it. If you look at the charts from the year this came out, I guarantee it is filled with songs that have been forgotten and aren’t nearly as good as Glamour Profession.

I'm not sure if this is spot on with the original, and I'm not sure if its not. All I know is, this has to be one of the most insane chord progressions in popular music, and what you're playing sounds amazing!
@unforgettablejazzfusion5546 Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your comment! The 3 chords at 1:32 are a bit more spiced up by me. What they play is Bb6 or Bbmaj7 13, A6 or Amaj 13, Abmaj7. I altered it a bit but the functions of the chords stay the same. The chord after that I called Eb add2/G but some will disagree and call it a Gmin7#5. I don't like minor #5 chords because no matter how much I play them, the #5 will make the minor chord sound like another major chord with a third in the bass. The rest you could consider as accurate!
@EddieG1888 Жыл бұрын
@@unforgettablejazzfusion5546 I'm totally here for it! This was the song that sealed me as a 16-year old Steely Dan fan almost 34 years ago. I can play the bass line to easily, but Anthony Jackson is more outlining the chords than relying on root notes, so trying to figure it out from the bassline is pretty difficult. But I love the chords you're throwing in, it would be great to hear your piano part in isolation or over a rhythm track.
@EddieG1888 Жыл бұрын
I've been listening to this again and playing it myself over the past few days, and I think there are a couple of chords that might be slightly wrong, which is where I'm getting thrown off. I think the A9 in the verse over the "outside the stadium" is actually an Em9 to E6, and the chords over the "local boys" line is Ab/Bb to Bb/C. But I'd have been nowhere near getting any of this under my fingers without watching this video in the first place!
@Stavboy10 ай бұрын
@@EddieG1888 Agreed, largely. The "Outside the stadium" chord is Em6/9. Essentially the same voicing as A13, but it's definitely an E in the bass there. Also agreed on the Ab/Bb to Bb/C. There are some places where for me the #11 (or b5) really should be included in the chord names as that extension is so integral to the sound (although it could basically be added to every chord in this song since it's 90% dominant chords). Another correction is that it should be a G7b5 (not G7#5) on the "silver bowl" line. Still, great work UJF, and what a ridiculously crazy and fun progression this is!

I would guess C due to what sounds like a clear 2-5-1 from Ebmaj7 - D7#5#9 - G7#5#9 - Cm. "Living hard will take it's toll" It definitely does mode mixture and lot of borrowing for harmonies, and seeming willing to also just completely drift. This one is beyond my ability to completely understand the writing concept though, although it's very possible there wasn't a strict concept.
