17 minutes in and it is so nice to see these women talk about glamour and not YELL or be full of angst like most everyone today. I can't stand a single talk show today so this is a very nice treat to see all of these women who I have enjoyed their movies and their beauty, except only started to watch Debbie R in Halloweentown with my kids in the last 5 yrs or so.

No one notices Ms. Russell is drunk? Jean Peters next to her & Diahann Carroll are uncomfortable/concerned. This is actually incredible & priceless .. all the different dynamics between these famous iconic women .. Ms. Carroll the only woman of color handling the inevitable self consciousness of her position beautifully ... handling the awkwardness of naming "Men she found beautiful" ... at that time, she basically couldn't really say anyone who wasn't black without being really controversial & of course, she wants to uphold black beauty which is literally what she is invited there to do (intentionally or not) ... Ms. Reynolds intent on stealing the show (no malice, it's just her personality) ... Ms. Peters not really part of the Hollywood crowd anymore, Ms. Powell maybe the most authentically comfortable of them all .. and Ms. Russell LOL ... well, this whole vibe reminds me of early childhood LOL
@sisterluke
@sisterluke 4 жыл бұрын
1970s variety shows are interesting to watch from a historical perspective. I think Carrol and Powell were the only ones that seemed sober. Everyone else sounded loopy. Most awkward moments were definitely regarding race and ethnicity and Carrol was clearly brought on to give her opinions on “black beauty” and when she made a great point on how she wasn’t allowed to be glam on Julia or whatever sitcom she starred in because she played a black nurse but that character in That Girl had glamorous dresses for not really having a job, nobody commented on it or said that they agreed. When that clothing designer talked about someone looking like a “dark dirty gypsy” I was thinking WTF? Also Debbie pretending to be a black maid while serving the champagne was also awkward. Lastly, that designer talking about that Debbie Reynolds gown while she was pregnant must have brought back terrible memories since she lost that baby.

I like Debbie.She's very funny, but she went too far at times. She threw some indiscreet comments at Dinah, Jane Powell and Jean Peters, and bounced some questions asked by Dinah at Peters and Jane Russsell. But I don't think she did a parody of Prissy, the black maid in Gone with the Wind, with the champagne. Diahann Carroll was the only one she didn't try to upstage here. Very likely these ladies knew each other well, and -I agree- there was some backstage chatter between them about glamour before the show started.

Not entirely sure but I don't think Debbie Reynolds personally liked Dinah Shore. There were some staring looks at times and Eddie later wrote (in his autobiography later) with his ego of all the women he had and Dinah was allegedly one of his claimed many. Miss Reynolds may have been aware of that possibility thru the inner Hollywood grapevine. She at least appears unhappy to be there compared to the other ladies here.

What a difference between "then" and "now" as far as movie stars. Now they look great at 60 and then, over the hill. First of all, except for Jane Powell and Diahann Carroll, the hairstyles are matronly. Second, they are way overdressed. Third, Jane Powell was never a clothes horse in Hollywood but a perky kid and then woman. Fourth, the conversation is boring. Again, way too matronly and I'm 80 and it looks like something by parents would like. Finally, it's really amazing how different things are now. Exercise, no smoking, health compared to no exercise, women over 30 being treated like behemoths, and worst of all, the stoppage of mental growth. They seem cast in their life roles, they will never change. I'm thinking particularly of Jane Russell and Debbie Reynolds. Ten more years and they will resemble the card players in "Sunset Boulevard."
