I'll share with you that even though I am white, I came from a working-class family. I always knew that I could rise from my situation and do something meaningful with my life. But working hard at school, setting standards for myself and refusing to partake in anything that hindered my progress set me apart from the others in my community. My sisters called me "a snob who thinks he's better than us", and one even called me Jesus every time I encouraged her to improve. "Yes, Jesus! Thank you, Jesus!" she would say, mockingly. But she never finished high school, got pregnant and married at 18. When I got my first drgree and was invited to do my master's drgree at Oxford, they asked me how I got to be so lucky. I have traveled the world and worked abroad for many years, and they have envied every moment. We cannot be accountable for the choices of others.

Black women having class always triggers the majority for some strange reason. Though I wasn’t a diahann Carrol I was the very reserved, quiet, pretty type in school. Secretly I was very creative and down to earth but because I was an introvert not too many ppl knew. Being petite, and quiet but always put together I had my fair share of Girls trying to bully me. Though I was quiet I always stood up for my self when I had to out of defense. Even as an adult it’s the same ol same ol. Women at Jobs, neighbors..etc..there is always some woman trying to try me. Last year I had to file harassment charges for a neighbor who started harassing me when I didn’t want to befriend her. Though I was nice to the woman and friendly, she took it as an insult that I didn’t want to be friend her and started ringing my door bell all times of night, doing menacing things to get my attention n when that wouldn’t work she started making ridiculous complaints to the property manager that I was talking too loud, my heels were too loud coming up the steps, just nonsense. As soon as I filed the charges she cut all of it out. Classy and seemingly confident women tends to trigger the insecurity in others. Men included.

To live in the black community, and not be confined by the mental restraints the environment places on most of the people is rare and it stands out . When You are optimistic, confident, and want better for yourself( the complete opposite of what you’ll find in most black communities, )You become an automatic target by a lot of the hopeless souls who will work overtime to break your spirit.

I am a 65 year old (white)woman who decided that after seeing the TV series "Julia", that I wanted to become Julia when I grew up. I saw her as a role model. People don't like individualism. If you stand out from the crowd, you are a natural target to others. Just think back to your school days, everyone wanted to "fit in" so everyone did the same things and wore the same things, ect. I think the reason for the backlash towards 'boujie' people is that the stereotype often depicts them as indulgent, self-entitled, snobby, better than, demanding, superficial, materialistic and judgemental people based on class or status. It's the overt negative attributes of stereotypical wealthy people. Some wealthy people do have tender attributes like kindhearted, humility, thoughtfulness of others, genuine, and are not classit, but these aren't often publicised in connection to being rich or 'boujie'.

As a white male growing up in a predominantly black area , there was a young girl I always admired . Her name was Tiffany ! She was multi racial and stunning to look at ! She had tremendous self confidence ! Never talked about race or racism , she was just herself ! I recall one instance that caught me and I loved about her ! She had friends of all races ! One day she was out and about with mostly white girlfriends that day ! A bunch of white guys came back looking admiringly at the girls ! She never wavered from her confidence holding her own with the white girls who were also very oretty! When black guys ridiculed her for letting herself be admired by the white guys ! Her attitude was , hey , you guys flirt with white girls , so why should I limit myself ! She didn’t try to be white but was confident in who she was ! No, I never dated her as I was engaged and far older but I admired her recognizing she didn’t have to be typecast and stereotyped ! She just wanted a good guy . She dated both black and white guys but wanted mr. Right ! When I changed jobs and met other people of different races, I always remembered her just being herself ! All young people need that self confidence and quit playing race games ! Just recognize we are all created by the true God and should stay true to His calling !

I love Diahann Carroll. Bougie has become a bad word but it is really a high quality of life reflecting a person with high standards. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Carroll. She was not only beautiful inside and outside she was gracious and kind and oh so talented. I love her singing voice and she nailed it on Claudine. She never looked down on anybody and was fiercely proud of being black. She broke down so many barriers. If only she had married David Frost. He really loved her, valued her ad a person and supported her.

Many people don’t talk about this type of bullying and I honestly still experience it to this day. The portrayal has had an immense impact on how people treat real life women who are like Ms. Carroll. Society teaches that black women are not to take the time on themselves to articulate ourselves with grace and poise, in essence, feminine. There is something radical about a black woman taking the time to embrace herself and the finer things in life. I will say, as a person who has experienced this type of bullying, it gave me the opportunity to show other women how to show grace, set boundaries, and elevate their paradigm to see that we are all queens of our own territories. Therefore, there isn’t a need to be angry or upset about another woman resting in her feminine grace, there is room for us all. Also, we can all can learn from and appreciate one another. 💜👑💜

She has amazing eyes. I watched her in Claudine and she was amazing, should've won an Oscar for that performance. She is elegance! I spent a year in Michigan with my grandparents while my mother and older brother were trying to move to the suburbs outside of Chicago. I was very lonely and I cried a lot. I think it's common in the black community, it's just that it wasn't really addressed as trauma. There was this tweet that I put on my wall in my office at work: 'Being clean is not antiblack. Being healthy is not antiblack. Being well-read and educated is not antiblack. Being level-headed with self-restraint and impulse control is not antiblack. Being kind, polite or soft spoken is not antiblack. Being loved is not antiblack. Stop this.' Your video on Diahann just reminds me of this tweet. Haters just assume that you're better than them because of how you speak, education, etc. Just because they feel a certain way about it doesn't mean you have too. And Ms. Carroll is the proof of that.

I came up in the 70's and we all knew who Diahann Carroll was and disdain for being bougie was at an all time high. Thankfully I, as a young black woman, found it refreshing to see a black woman with natural grace and elegance and strived throughout my own life to be the same, critics be damned. Currently our culture again seems to have disdain for natural grace and elegance and young women today - of all ethnicities - strive more to be over made up and what they consider "real" and "down to earth" just translates to just so much tackiness. Women should understand we can be sexy and full of grace simultaneously. Another black woman of the past who oozed sexiness and refinement was the singer Nancy Wilson! Stunning and sexy without being overtly so. These were great role models .

At school I was bullied alot for being I guess what some would say "reserved" I wasn't elegant or anything but I was definitely mature for my age and carried myself different and it bothered alot of people. I liked to read alot, I was obsessed with old Hollywood movies, fashion from the 1940s and 1950s, I still am I haven't changed. It took me till the age of thirty to understand why other women made my life hell. It's not even that they were jealous of me I think alot of it is just not understanding someone. So when others were going out getting drunk, smoking and obsessed with getting boyfriends at fifteen. I was drawing, painting, writing making things, watching films. It bothered them that I didn't care about the same things they cared about. It annoyed them that I just kept myself to myself. I would get stuff thrown at me, spat on and even had a girl pull my hair out at the root! I was called "stuck up"and "posh" I don't hold any hate for those people who did that to me, I send them love and wish them well. They did what they did because they couldn't figure me out, I didn't want to be like them.

I was always told I act white because I always presented myself well even as a child I was always very intelligent and articulate and even as a young adult in some spaces with my own black women I was looked at as more of a threat than someone who could be a true friend I've even had men that I've dated expect me to act what they deem as ghetto instead of acting as a lady should it's odd the way that we're looked at is if we're not human but more of a trope a stereotype a verb or a noun just sad

I have always been called a white girl or oreo because of my posture, speech and preppy taste too. No matter where I go, middle america, south america even the UK but i am just myself. My mother was always professional and well spoken so I thought it was normal. I was always kind of teased about it but i dont care anymore because i am genuinely being myself and my interest, poise and speech have gotten me very far in life. Elegant, confident women will always trigger people at any age. Even more so if they’re black. Maybe it’s the audacity to present as the best version of yourself without apology, in a world that automatically expects you to feel less than. Generally speaking though, women like Diahann Carroll have such an innate elegance that people either feel compelled to admire, consume and possess that beauty, or, they feel the need to envy and destroy it. Some women have the ability to enter a room and influence the energy and ambience of it without saying a word. Some who possess this are aware of it, and some aren’t. Either way, they affect people. A woman simply holding herself in high regard should never affect another negatively. If it does, that person needs to ask themselves ‘why?’, figure it out, and fix that trigger. Most children don’t have the maturity and introspection yet to do this, hence the whole ‘bully the pretty girl in the class/school’ scenario. What’s an adult’s excuse though? Ironically, most women like Ms Carroll are simply minding their business and being their authentic selves. That’s why they flourish. That’s why they stand out. Monica Belluci’s character in Malena is the perfect example of people not knowing how to behave around pure, innate feminine energy.

I can relate I was taught as a child to be poised and carry myself in a certain way. I was bullied as a child for being "bougie" and I still go through it with the mistreatment and outcast to this day. It's been a very lonely and hurtful existence. I loved Diahann Carol. I loved her show "Julia" but found out later that most black Americans thought the show and character was unrealistic. I was shocked because my aunt was a registered nurse so the show was real to me. Unfortunately, many black people internalize the image that America presents to us instead defining our images ourselves.

I remember meeting Diahann Carroll in 1973 in Harlem they was between takes on Making the film Claudine on 145th st and Bradhurst avenue I was 17 I was coming down Sugar Hill with my brother and 3 friends and she was sitting right on the corner with James Earl Jones sitting in the actors seat, we just look at her and she said " how you boys doing" we acted shy we said hello to her she was so pretty with those beautiful eyes, James Earl Jones didn't say anything he just look at us, I will never forget that day.
