I had a Jane Fonda moment. For 18 years I was a member of a posh health club at the Hilton International Hotel, with an indoor/ outdoor pool, weight and exercise room, huge whirlpool, and saunas. The hotel offered reduced rates to sports teams which stayed at the hotel and many famous teams would visit. Jane was married to Ted Turner at the time and the couple rented the entire 32 floor of the hotel for themselves. And their baseball team had a floor to themselves, as well. At one point I was the only person in the pool and then one of the baseball players joined me. He was very musclebound, like a professional athlete should be. Standing up at the shallow end of the pool I watched with disbelief and the sight of a handsome Black man who was something of an athletic machine. His huge energy was unforgettable. We never chatted. I just let him be. And upon leaving the club, in the weight room, there was Jane herself. She was smaller than I would have imagined, which often happens in the movies. Recently I had a chat with Mark Ruffalo. He was warm, friendly and diminutive. And Jane was also on the short side. It was tempting to approach her as she exercised, but she was wearing oversized, dark sunglasses, so I figured she wanted to be left to her own devices. So I respected her privacy as she took on the exercise machines. My one brief but still memorable Jane Fonda moment. I have also met Sophia Loren and she was tiny! Marlena Dietrich years ago was quite tall though, and very beautiful, finely dressed in a red Chanel suit, and she had a larger-than-life charismatic energy that was unforgettable.

Maybe she didn't want to talk about it, but she was a born again Christian and wrote her memoir 'My life so far'. You could look at her eyes in the cover photo and see the glow. Unfortunately, her apology to Vietnam vets in the book didn't go down too well and she had tobacco spittle spewed on her when she was signing her memoir at the launch. Something like that can be discouraging but it is further proof that we belong to Christ.
