The interpretation I saw from others was that the “boy” is her father, given they describe him early on as the son of a soldier. Basically a man with an old sense of right and wrong. And because of how the first seemingly has the girl try to act more feminine, it implies she might not be comfortable that way or even identify more as the opposite gender. Could also be her keeping her true sexuality a secret by “trying to keep her head on straight” If this is the case, it speaks to an unfortunate reality of parents who don’t accept who we are cause it doesn’t fit their idea of how each gender should be, and to many of us we may even see them as devils. Or in this song’s case, Satan.

thats a interesting take! alot of the album is insiperd by classic j (the singer)'s experience with gender and might actually be the other way around however now J uses they/them pronouns and identifys as non binary. as a trans woman this album really resonates with me
