I walk through the replacement of a pane of glass held in an aluminum frame window, from removal all the way to the end of the fix. I couldn't find but a couple of videos on this particular project so I thought I'd add my own!
Credit to Blake Darling for his previous efforts getting me started...

A few things I've learned. 1. You can use siliconized acrylic latex caulk instead of silicone which is much more forgiving....easier to clean. 2. You can use an 8" long piece of tape folded onto itself from the middle for a few inches with the remaining two flaps adhered to the pane of glass to help manage the placement of the pane. 3. A heat gun or hair dryer can warm the vinyl glazing strips to make them more pliable in case of advanced age or cold weather which increases the "brittleness" and chance for cracking. Glazing strips are available in a few dimensions and a few basic basic colors online.

For a single pane replacement like this you'd pay about $150 (Materials+$125 service charge) which means for a simple phone call don't have to worry about measuring, Ordering, Cutting,tools Carefully removing bead, risking injuring yourself, and you don't have to clean up any glass dust or shards or dispose of any broken glass. You also don't have to deal with extreme heat or cold as an added bonus. If it takes an hour to a lead and a helper to drive to the location for the second time( because it would have had to have been measured for free) than the company might make $80 on your single pane. Then they have to pay taxes on that and pay for the companies insurance.

Ok bud here’s the deal for future reference and please share. Pry the tinfoil glass stops up from glass not from metal frame this will make it reusable install is the reverse slide metal lip into metal frame and push down on glass side that will lock it in place it seems counter intuitive but trust me I have done this kind of repair many many times I have been a glazier my entire adult life and and some as a teen. If you have any questions regarding ANY glass work feel free to reach out to me thanks and good job

Your "paint scraper" is a 1" putty knife. Otherwise most everything is extremely informative. You really did learn as you go. John H is spot on - if the old glazing (not caulking) is dry and stuck, a heat gun or very focused (not diffused) high power hair dryer can soften the sealant. I've been tempted to use wire brushes on a drill to clear the dry caulking but go with the softest wire brush if you do this. Older aluminum is thick, but a drill brush can be hard to control and you can bend or scratch pieces. I have resorted to stiff tooth brushes and a lot of elbow grease to get the difficult flakes out. You only need half of the area clean of old glazing product for the new glazing to seal, so don't get carried away.

Awesome! Great help. Can I measure the glass accurately by measuring the glazing strips?
@HowerDo
@HowerDo Жыл бұрын
It's been several years - I legitimately do not know, but you will have to get the glazing out to get the glass out so you'll likely do better to simply measure the glass directly and avoid any possible issues. Would assume, otherwise, the longest measurement on the glaze would provide a close proximity. Good news is you should have very marginal wiggle room (veeeeery marginal).

Hello, I'm trying to remove the entire glass window that moves up and down inside the larger frame. Do you know how to remove that section. Thanks great video!
@HowerDo
@HowerDo Жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks! And.. unfortunately I do not have anything for that. My gut tells me you take out all the glass panes, then knock out the interior sliding frame because these things were often built into the house. If you're trying to replace just this piece you might well be better off just replacing the entire window. It'll cost less, most likely, and provide much better insulation!
@euphoricmonk
@euphoricmonk Жыл бұрын
@@HowerDo Thanks for the quick reply. Well if I can just remove the bottom part of that moveable window then I will have enough clearance for my AC unit. I'm short about 1 inch which really bums me out. I know there is a way just need to figure it out. I could also make two small drimmel cuts into the frame on one side and just pull the entire window out of frame.

Can I find those little sidings? I have some that are brittle and not able to keep the glass intact. I have a few of these I like to replace on my own. Also nervous because I have never done it before
@HowerDo
@HowerDo 2 жыл бұрын
Those strips are called flashing and I had a hard time finding them which is why I just tried to be careful. If they are too brittle you can maybe find some online (amazon or speciality windows store), or, as a last measure just use silicon caulking to place/hold the window pane in place. The flashing is designed to clip into the frame and helps run water out of the seal, i.e. keep it outside. Ultimately, these kind of windows are outdated and should be updated with a newer style so if you're going the silicon route, just realize you're going to have to break that pane out and scrap it down to replace it again in the future. As for being nervous, it sounds like you'll figure out the process before you're done! No need to be nervous - just wear good leather gloves and go slow, give yourself time to learn, and recognize you'll probably screw up a couple of times before you get it right. Consider that in your materials and cost and you'll have enough on hand to embrace it and enjoy the learning process! Good luck!

Found this on Amazon: www.amazon.com/White-Snap-Vinyl-Glazing-Bead/dp/B00FYVNKA2#customerReviews. Straight ends so you will need to cut the angle in the corners for a good fit. Negative review seems to be from someone that didn't read the full description. Not sure about locally - never bought any myself and made due with what I could salvage. Good luck!
