Is it possible to change a window from the inside only? I don’t have a ladder to get up to the second floor from the outside.
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Only if its a newer window where you can remove the sash and work on it, other than that youll need to work from the other side. Maybe can borrow a ladder, or I see them for sale all the time cheap on craiglist, or Facebook marketplace, offerup
@throwmilly
@throwmilly 3 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyDIY thank you so much I appreciate you answering so quickly. It's a hundred year old house and the windows don't look too new. One is plexiglass and the other is glass. The owners of the house just didn't fix things correctly. The plexiglass pushed out from the window pretty easily. I tried to fix it but ended up breaking a piece off instead. I'll see if I can't borrow or rent a ladder. Also means I'll have to talk to downstairs neighbors. They aren't the friendliest, the ladder would have to go in front of their window too. They'll survive.

Any window and glass shop. Just bring your precise measurements into the shop and theyll cut it for you. You can bring the total opening measurements to them and ask them to cut it slightly smaller or if you can just measure old glass or total opening measurements minus 1/8-1/4 inch smaller for expansion

any advice on replacing a window on the 2nd floor? can it be done from the inside ?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
If the window sash isnt removable or its on fixed portion it may be tricky to do. If older wood frame window the metal push points need to be installed from outside. If newer type window you could apply sealer to frame and pull window in against it and tape it to frame while drying so doesnt fall out. You will need to buy window suction cup with handle to achieve the inward pull 👍🏻
@yomman123
@yomman123 4 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyDIY I have an older woodframe, so no way of avoiding the need to install and seal it from the outside? So I assume scaffolding or a ladder will be required. Did I understand correctly? Thank you for being so responsive!!
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
@@yomman123 Yes will be best to install from outside. You can try as I said with the new piece of glass and suction cup to pull against sealant from inside the house. May be best to just hire a glass company or handyman who has a ladder though. Call around for quotes and should be able to find a good price

Good video! But I have a question. You take a 1/4" off the measurement so there's an 1/8" gap all the way around but then it looks like you put the window in so it's actually resting on the bottom of the pane. Wouldn't that mean now there's no gap at the bottom and 1/4" gap at the top? Is that OK?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY Жыл бұрын
It's ok still. It's just to allow space for expansion and contraction with the changing of the seasons 👍 it should still be able to move with the flexible sealant. You just don't want the glass to be a perfect fit or it'll break when expands

How can this be done with an iron window?
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
For metal frames you have to take them apart usually if its built in parts. Some old ones just have window glazing putty you have to remove like this video

For the iron window, once i have the replacemet, i fill the frame with glazing putty, insert the window, insert the points, then apply the sealant...and let it dry, correct?? Thank you for your channel!
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
@@peterandrews5924 you're welcome. If its metal window style with glazing putty. You remove and clean, install new glass, insert points, I think metal frame used triangle points, then glaze over ouside edges. Glazing takes long time dry before painting 👍

why no glaze on the inside of the window frame before setting the window?

You don't use glazing on the inside of the window, but if using a sealant like I did you can put small bead around opening before placing glass in 👍

We have an old window that I’m looking to replace the glass but don’t see any points
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 6 жыл бұрын
The points are underneath the glazing. Once you chip and remove it youll see them. You just push the points into the wood flush against the glass. Not too tight against though. Dont want to crack or chip glass 😀👍

What do you mean by 7/5?on my rulers a quarter inch would 6/8. It would be 31 by 6/8. I get confused when you say 7/5. Please help
@JonnyDIY
@JonnyDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry for confusion I was saying 75 as in 0.75 or 3/4. So you want to measure the opening of the window and subtract 1/4 inch or 0.25 from each side. So if the opening is 30in x 20 in, get the glass cut size 29.75 x 19.75 inches. Good luck, hope this made sense

Thanks i put in the glass my self for the first time and my dad helped. All went well but my dad crack the glass a little putting in thos little metal clips to hold the glass in. He cracked it putting in the clip on the right side of window frame. It was our last clip to and it would have been done with no cracks if it wasnt for the last mistake. Lol i felt like a pro until we cracked it at the end of our job lol. Next time if i ever do it again im do it with out the clips just use the sealant. Thanks for vid and Reply.
