Simon and Garfunkel sang the song as a forewarning, Disturbed sang it a as a post- warning. Pentatonix sang it as a hope for change. A return to before Simon and Garfunkel’ warning.

With all due respect to Simon & Garfunkel & Disturbed... PTX’s version of this song is BY FAR the best I’ve ever heard. It felt like I was having a heart attack when I first heard it. It was soul shatteringly good.

Yes disturbed has a strong voice but felt it was the same throughout. With Pentatonix you get goosebumps from all of their voices. That's my opinion PTX made this song refreshing made it their own. I listen at least 1x a day every day. Goosebumps every time

The Pentatonics version for me is the best. I mean no disrespect to disturbed, but to me, it was like a very good black and white photo. At best, two-dimensional. PENTATONICS version was like surfing a giant wave with its beautiful feelings. So say I to the silence grows. You have met your match!!!

Ah, need to add - they call themselves a 'vocal band' and with good reason. The members are: Matt Sallee (Bass - he replaced their original bass Avi Kaplan in 2017 whom you will see in older videos), Kirstie Maldonado (mezzo soprano), Scott Hoying (baritone who quite regularly sings tenor and covers the bass whenever the bass singer has the lead) , Mitch Grassi (counter tenor - he was singing in his lower register in this song), and Kevin Olusola (beat boxer, cellist, tenor - he's pretty much the quiescent over-achiever of the group)

Avi , their Base in Hallelujah, left the group, but did a guest appearance, with Home Free, " Ring of Fire" Scott, Kirsty, and Mitch have been together since they were in grade school! Kevin, the Beat Boxer, also plays cello, and sings! Pls react to more!

As beautiful as this song is, it's a shock that what they are talking about is a nuclear explosion with people walking aimlessly about and those that remember write the story on tenement walls and subways halls so that people won't forget what got us there. This was a song first created by Simon and Garfunkel singing about the cold war when we feared a war with Cuba. As a child, I remember the , ' duck and cover' training that we practiced under our school desks. This was a song written in the 60's when I was a child,. But Pentatonix has made it's song for today with our hearing of certain countries practicing with missiles, not knowing where they will be aimed. Pentatonix does this song so much justice. So many of the younger generation do not remember those times and try to figure out what this song means. What I just wrote explains it all. An earthshaking reminder. They do a fantastic job! 💙 I Love Pentatonix!

If I might recommend you react to their version of John Lennon's 'Imagine'. They do to it, what Disturbed did to The Sound of Silence. The song has a message - and Pentatonix brings it into the present. It also has what we Pentaholics like to call their 'wall of sound' - a five part harmonic coda that will blow your mind! And you will get to hear Kevin (beatboxer here) sing. Added note: You will see a different bass in Imagine than is here; Avi Kaplan was their original bass who left the group amicably due to personal reasons in 2017 and helped find his own replacement in the form of Matt Sallee. This is the ONLY change to the group since it formed back in 2011 to compete on the TV show The Sing Off. (Mitch and Kirstin change their looks a LOT and it is fairly common for new reactors to think they are different people.) Subbed and looking forward to more!

Very interesting analysis. It is cool to watch somebody taking a technical look at the music. I was 10 or 11 when the original by Simon & Garfunkel released the original. I think it will always remain my favorite. That said, I also loved Disturbed's version. To my ears, Pentatonix took the two and sort of merged them. They kept a lot of Disturbed's intensity, but restored the harmonies from the S&G origonal.

There are SO many amazing PTX songs. Their harmonies and arrangements are stellar. Since you are savvy in terms of music theory, you should watch some of their evolution videos (fantastic transitions, key changes, beat/tempo changes) and their original "Run to You" and "Mad World," which have haunting harmonies AND "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," because they kill it even though it's instrumental. But seriously, all their stuff is great. They're brilliant in terms of arrangements. For sick beatboxing and bass, do their Daft Punk Medley. Other favorites: "Gold," "Say Something," "Amazing Grace," and their Sing-Off performances (especially: "Born to Be Wild," "Love Lockdown," "Let's Get It On," and "Dog Days are Over." Kevin, the beatboxer plays a few instruments, and you can see him cello-boxing in "Say Something," and "Radioactive."

I know this song since the sixties but I didn't put much attention to the lyrics until I heard Disturbed and the lyrics hit me like an earthquake. In Disturbed you don't " hear " the song, you feel it in your soul like the message it meant to be. More PTX, please. There are MANY. You might like their the Hallelujah, or the Grammy winning. Daft Punk, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the third Grammy singing a duet with Dolly Parton on Jolene. Note: From 2011 - 2017 the bass singer was Avi Kaplan. He left the group amicably. From 2011 - Present the bass singer is Matt Salle. (White jacket on the end - this was recorded in 2018 or 19) Note#2: When the bass singer, Avi or Matt, is singing the lead, Scott Hoying (middle blond who started the song) takes over the bass. Otherwise, he is the baritone. The countertenor is Mitch Grassi, the soprano is Kirstie Maldonado, and the beatboxer/tenor (he does sing on some songs) is Kevin Olusola. Finally, there are a lot or original songs by them as well. There isn't a bad choice whatever you choose to listen to next.

It's always great to see people discovering PTX, especially musicians! PTX is unparalleled, in my opinion, when it comes to arrangements. They are only five voices and yet, always manage to sound full, while maintaining individuality. So much talent in this band...it's unreal. I'd recommend Hallelujah to check out more of their harmonies, Bohemian Rhapsody for another very clever arrangement and the Daft Punk medley, because it's hard to believe it all comes from their mouths alone. Great reaction!

Imagine and Amazing Grace are a must to listen to from PTX or Pentatonix, the rest of their songs are ear candy all the way around. I love the original as it was in my youth and the time then was also in a lot of distress and pain. The Simon and Garfunkel always felt sad and wistful, like a please listen but I'm afraid to shout to loud. Disturbed felt like anger that no one has listened, PTX feels like we haven't lost yet, there is still time but now need to not only listen but to respond.

Yes, PTX is arguably the best a cappella group today, thanks for sharing this! I've also tried to get 4th Impact to cover this song too, to no avail yet, lol. And you already know about their harmonies!! They would do much justice to this song. Take care, GK, and thanks again! Stay safe!

I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel. I love their songs. I know a lot of folks will disagree with me, but I do not like Diturbed's version at all. Now PTX...I love their rendition, I think they actually improved it. Love them!

Disturbed is still my favorite too. PTX is a close second.

Simon & Garfunkel's version, was a soft warning about those who fear rejection and don't share their talents. Disturbed's version was an angry, why did not heed the original warning, and Pentatonix's version was a hopeful shouting of the warning, and showing the world what only 5 voices can do. My wife thinks Disturbed's version is a lot better. I just love what PTX does with this song. All versions of this song are rather unique, so each can stand on their own.

Great reaction! If you want to hear guitar check out PTX'S Bohemian Rhapsody and for harmony it would be Havana. Cello can be heard in their Shallow and their Perfect. I agree with Gabrial Miles, Come along is wonderful but sadly underrated.

I love PTX but imho I still greatly appreciate Disturbed’s version the best by far. This song is very pretty but the way Disturbed does it brings much more emotion to me than any other version I’ve heard. I’m not even able to get through it without tearing up…and that’s after listening to it 100s of times since it was done.

I think Disturbed's is still my fave, but I'm a HUGE Pentaholic, and this may be the only cover I don't give to them as the best. It's a VERY close call, though.

Also you should know, they have only had one change in their group. The original bass singer (Avi Kaplan) left in 2017. Replaced by Matt Sallee. The counter tenor, Mitch Grassi and the mezzo soprano, Kirstie Maldonado, change their looks a lot.

I sub'd in hopes of more Pentatonix. I am sharing your reaction to the Facebook group Pentaholics and they will come to see your reactions. For my opinion, the Disturbed version of this song was just too Negative, this version offers hope. AND if you really want to be amazed with their INSTRUMENTATION, you really need to check out their version of Bohemian Rhapsody, I can't wait till you hear the Guitar Solo!
