I still think that this is the best ever a cappella arrangement ever done and the fact that they made this video in Avi's kitchen (as their venue let them down at the last minute) with just a few hundred dollars and a couple of ring lights! It's insanity! And the fact that they can do this live is UNREAL! There is a video of them singing it in a hotel room, no affects, nothing. So impressive.
@janlauderdale90173 жыл бұрын
One amazing thing about Avi is his ability to whistle-hum and do polyphonic overtone singing. He does is frequently in their videos, and I believe most people just think Kevin is creating the other sounds. He does it in this video as well as in Bohemian Rhapsody. You should watch for it! Thanks for your detailed reactions! ❤

You are correct with Kirstin. As she says, "my name is Kirstin, but you can call me Kirstie...it rhymes with thirsty." And you are SO right about her angelic voice. Hits me right in the feels every time I hear her sing. I know the arranging procedure of this was time-consuming, but the entire recording and shooting of the video took place in one day. They had booked studio time, but it fell through at the last minute. So they recorded it in a bedroom closet and shot the video in a kitchen, using just black curtains, a black light, two ring lights, and a smoke machine. The shooting budget was $400 (that didn't count the editing and post-production costs, but that was also done on a shoestring budget). The result was their first world-wide hit, international superstardom, their first Grammy, and moving from a record contract on a small Sony-owned label (Madison Gate) all the way up to the major RCA label.

You would probably enjoy watching the beginnings of Pentatonix. They were in an a capella singing competition called The Sing Off. Each week they had to prepare one or two songs based on the theme of the show for that week. Even in the short length of the show you can see growth and improvement in their singing and presentation. Those might be fun to react to as well.

Just to let you know, Avi does overtones in a lot of their performances, two tones at once. Kevin does what he calls cello-boxing. As a classical trained cellist,that beatboxes at the same time. The whole group all agree that Mitch has the most impressive technical control of his voice. Scott is a beast of riffs and runs. And together Mitch and Kirstie together create the sound of angels. Kirstie has also performed on Broadway and shows so much emotion in everything she sings. Matt, the new bass is so incredibly smooth and can't help but give you a tremendous smile in every performance.
@justlinsu3 жыл бұрын
They won their first Grammy with this video. Avi (bass) & Kevin (beatboxer) used their apartment and it was filmed in a closet using ring lights...each one was recorded separately. They were down to their last $400 so used it for their contacts & makeup etc. Editing was genius. There is a video of how they made it. Avi is a classically trained Basso profundo. He can also and has done overtone singing. Thanks for such a great analysis I really enjoyed the information you shared. Liked & Sub

This took about a week to put together. In an interview with Grammys Mitch detailed it. First was choosing which songs to use, then in which order. The main melody is figured out, then the background is put in, and Kevin and Avi work together to come up with the bass and percussion. Then it gets tweaked to fill in the holes.

I have watched hundreds of reactors & you are the 1st one I have ever found who appreciates the breath control that they have! That is also very evident in their cover of Amazing Grace. At the beginning Kevin & Kirstie hold their note under Matts solo for like a gazillion measures! (Matt's the new bass that came on board when Avi left a few years ago - it was totally amicable) I have STILL to find where they breathe! And yes, I have tried!! I was in chorus in high school & choir at Church for many, many years, and we had to learn proper breath control. It is extremely hard. And I appreciate all of your talking! Most Pentaholics here have heard these songs hundreds of times & we're here to hear your remarks & to watch you get your mind blown! It is an addictive experience! Thank you for your knowledgeable commentary! I totally enjoyed it!! I also appreciate your intelligent sense of humor! I've subbed & will be around as long as you react to Pentatonix! 2 other A Capella groups who are ultra talented are Voiceplay and Home Free, if you want to check them out. Many Pentaholics like those 2 groups as well & will watch your reactions to them. God bless!

What a great commentary and reaction! I very much enjoyed both your explanations and disbelief at what you were hearing. 😃 Pentatonix won their first grammy for this mashup of 6 or 7 Daft Punk songs and the grammy was for best arrangement, instrumental or acapella. Their arranger, Ben Bram, won it with them; he's the one that arranges their songs with them, though they often just circle jam as five until they have a working demo, then they send it to Ben Bram to put the finishing touches on it and get it ready for recording. Some songs they can do in a little as a day, and some of their large medleys like the Evolution of... series take weeks to months to create. They're really skilled at it too. For true mashups, check out La La Latch, As Long As You Love Me / Wide Awake, or New Rules x Are You That Somebody. For medleys with lots of songs, definitely have a look at their Evolution of ... series (just pick your favorite artist) or their most recent, the 90s Dance Medley. And I agree with the other commenters' suggestion of Wizard of Ahhhs (although that was the brainchild of Todrick Hall, PTX execute it masterfully). If you want another EDM vibe song, have a look at their original Love Again. Kevin and Avi will blow you away with their rhythm and bass section. 😁

Some have commented on when Mitch takes a breath during the opening verse(s) since it lasts so long and the quality of his voice doesn’t seem to change during that intro. I’m sure there are other examples, Avi holding a single note for 10 seconds or more without an apparent breath. Glad to see you are posting a few more reactions. LOVING your reactions and breakdowns of their skill and other information. Very educational at points. Two things I'm not sure you're aware of however. 1) When they do the harmonies, often Scott will be middle-harmony between Kirstin (Kirsty sounds like thirsty). Which is amusing as he's actually a baritone (covering for bass when Avi or Matt sings higher). And that Avi (the bass in this one) can do overtone singing, and often adds sounds to a song that might normally be attributed to Kevin. NOT that I am trying to diminish at all anything Kevin pulls off.
