Loving this board. I've been planning to make my first board... a blue tinted twin fish coincidentally. Did you only do the two resin layers and then sanded/polished the second? Also what was your progression of sanding grits? Cheers :)

Hey thats awesome you going to shape a board, it’s so fun/rewarding/special to surf a board you made with your very own hands, Stoked for you man! Glassing a board is divided into two big steps, the lamination and the hot coat. The lamination is where you are applying resin to the fiberglass weave, you let that harden, and then after you brush on a very thin layer of resin that you sand out and polish. Interesting tidbit of info, all the strength comes from the lamination phase where you are applying resin to the fiberglass cloth, the resin you add after the lamination (the hot coat) just gives you a surface to sand ultra smooth and doesn’t add any strength to the board and unfortunately increases the boards weight a fair amount (the laminated fiberglass cloth is bumpy and has texture). I rough sand 120 grit, then 240, next 320, lastly 400. Then i pour on a 1000 grit “compound” and buff the board. Lastly i polish it with Meguiar’s #7 car glaze🙌🏻

Hey bro, great work, board is looking good 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙Do you use high density closed cell EPS , Styro or Exps, they have to be super high density since you glass them heavy, if you don't mind me asking what kind of blanks and epoxy you use?

Slavick, hey I use Marko Foam Virgin EPS blanks 2lb density and apple core stringers (my favorite stringers in the world, super strong but light)! markofoamblanks.com. I really like Resin Research Quik Kick ULTRA Epoxy, the work time is around 25min which is nice, not too fast, not too slow, nice thing is it cures faster for epoxy so you don't have to wait around forever, takes about 2 hrs before you can flip the board to glass the next side! greenlightsurfsupply.com/collections/resin-and-fiberglass-cloth/products/resin-research-2000ce-ultra?aaa=john

Nice board man!!! If I can recommend you one thing it is that you tape your rails before hot coating, it will save you a lot of time sanding. What did you use for the reinforcement on the tail? Was it volan or regular fiber glass? Greetings from The Basque Country.

Whoa Basque Country! That’s awesome!! I normally tape off my rails but saw a video posted by the legend @kazumasurfboardshawaii on Instagram where he mentioned that he doesn’t tape off the rails (except for resin damming the tail) and just kept brushing the drips off. I tried it on this board and it was a horrible decision hahaha, i was brushing off drips forever, thought it had kicked thoroughly to the point it wouldn’t drip anymore, but the next morning found a ton of hardened drips hahahah. Maybe he is kicking his resin super hot, it sure would be convenient to not have to tape off, but for now I’m not risking it anymore hahahha

hello friend...I made the pin line before the last layer of resin...but of course when sanding I also took the pin line....now to correct that my idea is to paint the black line with a Posca marker and give it a resin hand on top.. When giving the resin, will the black line be removed? Thank you very much friend.
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely have done that before, resin pin stripes are so hard to not sand through! I love POSCA pens and pretty much exclusively pin strip with them now. I’m not 100% sure what you are asking but if you worried about hot coating over the top of Posca pen, unfortunately I’m not sure about that, when I use Posca pens I always just do it on top of the hot coat, it’s generally pretty durable and doesn’t get scraped off easily

How did you glass the tail, I’m having a lot of trouble trying to figure out we’re to make cuts
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 3 жыл бұрын
Dude glassing the tail is seriously hard! I do a center cut to the base of the fish tail, and then trim the excess off of the tips of the rails. A master glasser would probably do it somehow different or better button me, for the tight tricky areas where it’s hard to get the cloth to adapt well, like right in the v of the tail or the very tips, i cut a few small patches of cloth and hit those areas. It’s just easier to get a tightly adapted lamination on those crucial areas with small malleable pieces. Hope this helps, if not feel free to reach out for more help, always stoked to help out other enthusiasts 👍🏻

what tape do you use to obtain FINE lines in paint? Just regular paint tape?
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 3 жыл бұрын
For pretty much anything on a surfboard it is worth getting high temp rated tape, the resin heats up as it cures and the adhesive was of normal masking tape will fail and resin will seep underneath your tape line. (Hard lessons learned😭😂). I use Indasa tape shapersupply.com/products/indasa-mty-tape?_pos=2&_sid=09d5c711f&_ss=r or 3M 233+ or 3M 401+ tape. These tapes have higher temp ratings and are super adhesive 🙌🏻

How do you get the same color on both sides? I assume you just make sure you’re adding the same proportion of paint/pigment to each sides resin?
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 4 жыл бұрын
Hey good question, i used to try to match color between different batches of resin, and definitely had a few off batches! The easy hack is to just pour a pot with enough hardener for both top and bottom lam. Add in pigment to your desired color (realize that color will be diluted when you add in resin) and then just split your pot of pigmented hardener and save the second half for the 2nd lamination. 🙌🏻

hello friend... could you tell me the percentages of peroxide that you use according to the temperature of the environment? I bought a thermometer for my garage and I'm going to start laminating the board this week. I would like a catalyst that gives me time since it will be my second laminating board... thank you very much...you are a genius
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 2 жыл бұрын
Are you glassing with epoxy or polyester resin? Each epoxy manufacturer has its own specific mix ratios, typically 1:2 or .45:1, for polyester resin I typically mix just 1% for slower cure times and 2% for hot coat. Temperature wise each epoxy manufacturer has the ideal temp, I use resin research epoxy and they recommend about 75 Fahrenheit, for polyester resin if it’s above 80 Fahrenheit, the resin will kick a little faster than normal so I always add just a few drops of catalyst less than normal, maybe about a half mill less catalyst per 16oz resin is my go to. Hope this helps!

@@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop With 1% there is a risk that the resin will never catalyze? I think 1% is too little. Thank you
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 2 жыл бұрын
No worries! Poly is actually really sensitive, just a little more or less will really change your cure rate, absolutely will cure with 1%, 1% is the base level and slowest cure mix for polyester resin. Just by upping a little catalyst to 1.25% you speed up the cure, Here is a link to a catalyst mix chart I use

How long after you glassed it did you cut the cut lap?
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop
@RockandSeaGarageBoardShop 4 жыл бұрын
Raddon Jooste good question, so it depends on how fast your resin is curing. This board was with quick kicking epoxy that kicks in 10-20 min. With this resin i cut the lap 60-80 minutes after mixing the resin. So 40-60 minutes after I’ve laminated the board

Hey thanks man, Turned out pretty beautiful! You know for groveler boards built for smaller waves I typically don't throw a patch over the fin boxes, I haven't had any problems blowing out fin boxes. For step up boards or boards for more powerful surf I always throw on patches or better yet I like to install the fin boxes before I laminate the board. Do you throw patches over fin boxes even for small waves, guess it wouldn't hurt?!

Also have a soft spot in my heart for fish, absolutely love high volume little boards. Pretty much all my old vids were about variations on this fish shape, some shorter, some longer, pulled in tails, Asym etc…. Resin tints are seriously hard, I still struggle to get consistent color distribution, especially around cutlap lines. But hey honestly working to get good at all these little details is half the fun, super cool functional art you can slowly perfect over time. Fin cant is a bit of a personal preference for me, I like them canted slightly, I swear the boards are more lively when your on-rail hahahha 🤷🏼😂. The cant of a general thruster is around 6.5 degrees and quad fins are usually set around 4 degrees, I like to set my fins on these fish usually 5 to 6.5, lots of twin fins are set at zero degrees. The more vertical a fin is set the faster it rides but with cant I think boards ride with more control when your on rail. But that is just me, im sure everyone has their own preferences and swear by them hahahha.
