Should be just fine, if those fins aren't solid you might want to bring it over to Joe Roper's, they can just pull them out and fix them worst case.

it will work maybe 1 or 2 surf and then , it will drink water and delaminate if it didnt break before in half before that =), glassing is the most difficult part on surfboard shapping. Your resin mix seemed very liquid too me , you didnt cut your lap enough obviously you should have waited before hotcoat . sanding all bubble wrinkle , is very important because your board will be weak if you dont do it and it will delaminate it is really hard to fix afterward once everything is hotcoated... bare with my english im french .

Like you, I've watched dozens of other glassing videos. I learned more from yours than all of them combined. We really only learn from making mistakes. And the first time you try any job, it always takes 3x-5x the time you think it should. "I never want to do this again." Haha, something you can only learn after having done. Totally been there, brother. Thanks for sharing the best glassing tutorial on KZbin.

I always found the best time to glass a board is when the surf is shit and its gone raining or on a colder day. That'll help with working time and keep you in the mood rather than thinking of the surf. I wasn't blessed with You Tube back in the day. This dude is really brave posting this attempt.

I hope it rides fun and I catch you with it somewhere in the local SD line-up and I can try it out for shits and giggles. You did it! Amazing, glassing is the toughest part for most board makers, because there are tons of things you need to learn to do it right, and for the pros they need to do it without any mistakes and fast. Respect to the pro glassers out there! If you knew how fast the epoxy was going to set, with color mixed right you would have a much better experience, but you still saved the board, awesome! The fish looks like it works well, congrats to you! Ray StPierre

Everyone has to start somewhere. Here's a to-do list for the next time 1. buy your supplies from Surfsupply in Oceanside, not Mitch's. The cost savings are well worth the drive. Plus, they give your your glass fabric on a roll, not folded and stuffed into a plastic bag. 2. Their Apex line of epoxy is a great bargain. If you buy a 1.5 gal kit your cost for resin is ~$40/board so long as you don't waste it. 4. Don't do color with epoxy until your glassing skills improve. It messes with the mix ratio, it cuts into your working time with the resin and color in epoxy never comes out as even or as clean as color in regular polyester resin. Just don't do it. If you want color on a board with epoxy glassing then you can put your color directly on the blank: chalk, spray paint, posca pen, etc. Or you can put color on the outside of your glass job. 5. Use vinegar from the grocery store to clean up epoxy. Never use acetone or other thinners. Vinegar is way cheaper than acetone, it works, and it's not toxic like acetone or paint thinner. 6. Blow the blank off with an air compressor or canned air. Dust on the blank interferes with your bond. 7. Tape the foam around your finbox install so that when the cavity overflows you won't get it on your foam, You may need a couple inches of tape around each side of the cavity 8. After you rout your finbox, lay the finpatch over that - by itself. This is a trick for beginners - if you do this you won't have to hassle the bubble factor around your boxes during your main lamination. And you can cut a really clean finpatch. Finbox installs need more glass over them, especially if you're running large twins or keels with a lot of surface area - and which applies a lot of torque while you're turning. Never do just one layer of cloth over a finbox or plugs. Or even under a glass-on install. 9. Tape your lap lines off on the "dry" side of the blank relative to your lamination, and plan on laying the glass all the way around the apex of the rail to the lap line. Lay the tape flat and press it down hard so it really sticks to the foam, otherwise epoxy will seep under the tapeline. This is another reason you need to make sure there's no dust on the blank when you start to glass. 10. Razor cut the lapline after the resin sets to the hard but still slightly sticky stage. If you cut too soon you'll make a mess and if you cut too late the hardened epoxy will be hard to cut 11. Do not touch a lamination with your bare hands. Always wear gloves. The oils in your skin will mess with the resin. Epoxy is super sensitive that way. Now go back and take another swing at it.

I would avoid all black. Can de-lam easily from the heat. Also suit up, glove up, and wear a respirator when you sand, brah! You’ll get a bad rash with the fiberglass dust. One more thing, try using UV curing. Gives you all the time you need. Work in your garage with windows n doors blacked out, and when you’re done glassing, just expose it to sun light or turn on an UV light set up. Don’t forget to label your dimensions and sign it
@HoStevie

Im not a shaper, but i have fixed some ding on my boards. I belive that you should have done it away from the sunlight. Some resins cure very fast when exposed to UV light. Maybe if it was done inside the house, you would had enough time to saturate de cloth properly. But it came out really nive for a first board! congratulations!

Next time; mix up a small small amount of resin, put the boxes in with dummy fins and use a protractor to check the angles are correct. Let those harden. And then put the cloth over the board, and pour a lot right down the stronger then slowly work it into the cloth. Don’t just pour small bits on different areas. It’s easier and the finish will come out better. Also make sure that you don’t leave pools of resin on the board to dry, it will have a weird surface. You wanna be able to see the weave all over uniformly

1. Horrible routing! Ask somebody how to keep router in your hands at least. 2. Mask finboxes with tape in advance, before glassing and cut out extra tape!! Glass boxes in board in advance before glassing too!! You forgot to put football shaped glass patches over finboxes before glassing to reinforce boxes in foam. 3. Glassing was a mess. Pour all the bucket around board and spread resin well towards the edges. Be quick. You must saturate the edges and wrap them around from bottom to the top of the board. If you cant do it in time, mix half of the needed resing and glass only half of the board. The immidietly glass the other half of the board when the first batch is still wett and tacky. All the glass must be saturated and mesh and fiber must come invisible after proper saturation!!! This is the most important moment of the glassing. No saturation of glass = no strength = crappy board! 4. You didn't laminated and cut off most of your overlaps! Wrong, very wrong! 5. Top glassing was way more better! But you can see how uneven unsanded overlaps from bottom bulid up to ugly ridges and you will have to sand them down later. 6. Wrong! Unfinished top overlaps = more messy work later and more sanding! 7. Your sanding was not sanding. You must sand whole board to really clean smooth shape without any ridges before gloss coat or you get more huge unwanted build up ridges to sand down!!! 8. You must glass unglassed exposed places! 9. Gloss coat was the biggest disaster. 🤦‍♂️ 10. Hey, you didn't sand it at all! You barely touched it. Sanding is very very important and creates final shape of your board. I usually put one more hot coat of epoxy after proper sanding. I fill all the bubbles and holes! 11. That seller from shop which told you to put whole pigment in resin is complete idiot and should pay u all the wasted money!!! Kick his ass. Ruined work allways sucks. 😤 That shape before glassing looked very good. 👍 12. Get rid of pigment until you really learn glassing 😉 13. Always use the best respirator when you sand, that resin/glass dust is very nasty stuff. 14. You gained lot of experience. Do another board, get better and don't forget to share it with us! Youe progress will grow very rapidly since now. 👍😉🍻 15. Watch more glassing videos over and over, you will learn a lot. 16. Save your first shape work your board No. 1 and be proud of it. Hey your forget to sign it! 😉

@@HoStevie yeah.. or joint compound or wall patching compound. you water it down with distilled water til it's the consistency of pancake batter then spread it on the blank thoroughly. give it a light sand to smooth it off after it dries. blow the dust off and then you're ready to glass. otherwise the epoxy resin will soak into the foam and the laminating layer won't cure properly.

How were the fumes from the epoxy? I used polyester to fix/glass the nose of my board and I feel so sick that idk if I ever want to mess with glassing again

The window of time to trim the glass hanging is like thirty minutes.the grinding room is a dirty pit wear protection ...paper clothes and mask for dust protection .add more glass and reinforcement ..it will work...I used to paint a few boards and watch the shapers.

Hey, for your first glassing on your own, not bad at all. This is how you learn. Plus, I think all the errors when glassing and sanding that appear in white gave to it a cool style and desing. Way to go. Fuck it! It's a fish, it's black, it's messy and I like it. Surfing punk style!

Didn’t turn out the greatest but hey man keep it up if that’s what you want to do and you’ll get the hang of it. My first board turned out so so but thankfully the company I ride for let’s me work in the shop so I’ve been getting better and schooled by some of the best shapers on the east coast.

You probably could’ve stuck to 4 x 4 x 4 glassing if you’re using the epoxy resin. It would be lighter and the epoxy resin would be stronger

no but it does get very hot if I leave it in the sun. The nice thing about this fish is that I put front traction on it instead of wax, so there is no wax to melt hostevie.com/shop/surfboard-front-traction-pad.html
