You comparing it to its always sunny is a great analogy, they go on crazy adventures but they always end up back at the bar haven't learned a lesson. I went into S1 wanting something Konosuba wasn't. But that's not too uncommon. What other anime do better is they hook me anyway, presenting something better than I had imagined. Konosuba missed the mark for me. I also wanted a quest anime, where they leave the starter town, get more powerful, add more useless party members, and manage defeat the demon king purely by accident. I really thought the series was (and still is) selling that narrative, but they just end up back at the bar, because it's their shtick. It's a bit too wishy-washy to me.
@WaterGhost33 жыл бұрын
I mean, I don't think his point is that they ended up in the same place- but rather that the show constantly throws the same jokes at you even in the second season that it starts to get stale. Sure, every now and then there is something slightly unique but then it just goes back to the same old same old. You can have a story where, like you said, they end up in the same position they started out as without learning everything AND STILL not repeat old jokes- which is something they didn't try to do in Season 2.

I actually didn't really care about season 1 all that much. It was only untill the last two episodes that I really got into it. And then season 2 happened and the jokes got infinitely better than the previous season. And then the movie happened which is in all honesty one of the funniest animated films ever made. I am sure a lot of people may have problems with the lack of progression in the plot but I never really cared about the plot about Konosuba. It just felt like an excuse to see these characters interact and get into hilarious situations. I watch this show for the comedy and the characters, not for the plot. The plot is okay but I just want to spend time with these people and witness their hilarious shenanigans. Also the dub is one of the best in recent memory.

13:35 Touches on the core of the show that you're overlooking because you have this preconception that you're unable to shake. The characters don't have character development because they're fine the way they are. They don't need to be fixed. The show sets up their traits like problems and then show how their traits can be great in the right context. It's a show about acceptance and indivuality, and also how your friends and family lift you up. A story about Darkness learning to fight, Megunin learning other kinds of magic, aqua learning how to better serve her friends, and Kazuma becoming a braze adventurer could be good, but it would also be a very different show.

It'd be like complaining that in One Punch Man, Saitama should become more proactive at being a hero and stop being so incompetent as the series progresses, and maybe even fight threats that challenge him for more engagement, at that point it would just stop being the parody series it always intended on being. If you don't like Konosuba, that's fine, but claiming it's bad because it's not what YOU want it to be is always an argument I see and hate. If you feel like the writer should change things rather than improve things, you're probably no longer presenting objective and instead subjective criticism. Wanting the writer to develop characters, have a more interesting storyline, etc, that can be all fair criticism under the right context, but that's not what Konosuba's about. It's not that the writer failed to accomplish something he was aiming for, he was just aiming for something else entirely. And yeah, I disliked simply because of the melodramatic intro. Kazuma works as a side character in a scene (like the multiple explosions scene in season 1), *not* as the main character of a scene (like the extremely unfunny and downright irritating stealing panties scene). All the jokes centered around him are sexual in some manner, and it gets old *really fast,* and most in your face and jarring than most of the sexual jokes with the other girls (that are much better and much clever than the jokes centered around Kazuma). Kazuma was *the main reason why* I found Konosuba season 1 not that much funny overall. He is the weight holding the series down in my opinion. If Aqua was the protagonist and he was a side character, the anime would be *much better,* because Kazuma works best as a side character supporting the jokes centered in other characters.

Long comment/LN information ahead: As an anime adaptation of a light novel, you have to remember that the anime was covering an ongoing series that started as a web novel around SAO's time. Konosuba's LN series is around 16 novels and the anime has covered up to the 5th book (the movie.) Each novel has a theme/revolves around one of the main characters in a rotation (one of the main characters hasn't even shown up yet in the anime.) It's fine to not like a book, since each book is focused on different things and are meant for different parts of the fanbase, however this is why Konosuba is so popular and loved by many. The author progresses the story subtly throughout the series, since it's a lengthy story and the point of the series is the journey, not the destination. Konosuba's slower progression makes it feel somewhat realistic, heck it's even a plot point later on. It may seem slow for some, but the author's writing gets better as it progresses and the story and world becomes very fleshed out. The movie is the start of the LNs becoming longer (each season covered 2 books, while the movie was most of the 5th book.) Book 5 is basically the equivalent of Araki finding his art style for part 5 onwards. (Also, seems like GR didn't realize it, but this is the start of Kazuma and Megumin's relationship in the series, which is why the movie focuses on Megumin and her village. The anime sadly didn't include all of the build up/subtle hints, so I can't fault people on this.) Konosuba's anime adaptation is good, but it definitely feels like it's meant for the people who read the LN. Neither the manga, LN, or the anime are 100% the same, which makes all of them enjoyable in different ways. I highly recommend GR to read the LNs, since he would be able to satisfy what he wanted from the anime, as long as he understands that the fun is in the journey. Fun Fact: In the WN, everyone was older, then they are in the LNs. On another note, the Konosuba author's next/last series to be adapted into an anime next(?) year is called: Sentouin, Hakenshimasu!/Combatants Will be Dispatched! It was written before Konosuba, but was published after Konosuba, so you'll see the author's progress as a storyteller. The main characters are villains from a Futuristic Earth, trying to take over another world. Think of Invader Zim. Sorry for the long comment from my phone, but I wanted to help clarify who Konosuba is for/give information for anime only viewers or people who are unsure about the series.
@Fred_Costa3 жыл бұрын
Your praise of the first season was that the fun part was just watching the interactions. Also, so many shows have episodes that don't progress the story and that is fine. More that half of Cowboy Bebop's episodes have no impact on the story whatsoever and it is still great. That said, it is just your opinion, we're all having a discussion here.

I feel like this is a case of you just having completely wrong expectations for the type of series Konosuba is, but honestly you put forth a good case for why you have these assumptions. But many of the things you highlight as negative aspects of season 2, you could just as easily say the same things about season 1. Sure we have less time with some characters because they were just introduced in S1, but there's not really any character development in any of our main casts by the end of that season either. The demon general they fight in S1 is just by chance, it just happened that the castle they were attacking was owned by a demon general, just like how it is a coincidence that the spa they went to was getting poisoned by another demon general, so this is obviously going to be a recurring theme for the series as a whole. You are looking for something in this series that it was never going to truly provide, being disappointed that Konosuba doesn't have character development, is like getting upset that “Run With The Wind” doesn't focus more on running, or getting mad at “Hibike! Euphonium” for not focusing more on the music, because those series were never really about those topics. If anything, I actually feel that season 2 does a better job of developing the world of Konosuba, because we finally leave the town, and are able to see other environments than the ones that we have seen. Also, like you said in the video, I think one thing that is trapping you in this mindset that there should be more character development in a comedy, is this fixation on the episode length and how it should be equal to quality of the narrative. Personally, the reason I think Konosuba has a low episode count per season is so they can spend more of the budget on each episode instead of dividing it by 12, that way the show can look as good as it does, because they are getting a 12 episode budget and spending it over 10 episodes instead of 12. Not to mention you also have to remember that this is a series based on a light novel, all of the jokes were written years ago, all they're doing is adapting it, so you looking for new hot takes on the current state of the iseki genre isn't going to happen, because the source material was written before the current state. Anyways, This comment is basically redundant since you touch on a lot of these points by the end of the video, just thought I would say it anyways since that like/dislike radio looks like a direct outcome of what you said in the first minute of the video. Either way, I still thought the video was good, and while I disagree with you on Konosuba, you did a great job of explaining your problem with Season 2, so good job, keep up the great work😊

Honestly. I think this comes from wanting konosuba to be a narrative. To me it’s just slice of life meets isekai. It’s literally a bunch of mates going around doing dumb things every day. And nothing actually changes. When you think about our own lives. In a bizarre way we see our own reflected in the cast. We get up. Go questing for money. Get back. Spend our money hanging with our mates. Pass out. Then do it all again tomorrow. And occasionally we have crazy shit happen. That first episode montage is so perfect as it sets out that adventuring in an isekai and boring ass life aren’t much different. We turn up to watch Konosuba because amazingly enough. It’s relatable.

For reference to anybody scrolling by new Konosuba has 17 volumes and the anime on average cover two volumes per season with the fifth volume covered in the movie. Progression for the characters only begins to ramp up around volume 5-6 where the second season left off. Uh I always felt that season 2 was better than season 1. But I agree with you that season 2 feels lacking in new content and continuing the story. However, all faults season 2 had I can point at season 1. So the question is then, why did you enjoy season 1 so much? Is it possible that your taste, and expectations, was just different because of the time difference between the seasons? Because watching season 1 and 2 right next to each other really does show you what it is: just more konosuba. Nothing different, just more konosuba. And that's all it needed to be since it's a comedy. That's why atleast I enjoyed them equally.

@@rhyssuy8361 Forgive me, but the text will be quite long. First, my bad, there are 3 generals they didn't kill, the other was the one in charge of the strategies of the Demon King's Army, they didn't kill her because she had a curse, if someone inflicted her damage, directly or indirectly, the other person suffers the exact pain in the exact zone, but if you killed her, all the people in a 100 meter radius will die. Now to the fight. He had a lot of help before the fight, he recieved a magic sword from Dust (the blonde guy introduced in episode 9 of the first season) before they left Axel, he recieved Aqua's magic boost, Eris gave him magic boost too (he died before fighting him, so Eris was giving him some magic boost before getting resurrected) and Kazuma realized that if you get support magic from different religions the effects will stack, the Demon King got his stats reduced by Aqua with an ability the gods have (which she forgot about it until that point lol) and he was already old, but still powerful. Besides, Kazuma learned an insane amount of skills and had like 40 or 50 skills points left, which he planned to use them to learn advanced magic after they came back (he didn't have time to learn it because of other events that happened in volumes 15 and 16), he had some high quality manatite (a mineral that has a lot of mana) and a lot of tools like dinamite (he created it in this world). First, Kazuma teleported him and himself to the deepest dungeon in the world (the place he went to raise levels with Wiz and Vanir in a previous volume) and the strategy was "hide and shoot him with Snipe or use the darkness to place traps" (before I forget, the Demon King was an archwizard), doing that he damaged him quite a bit, burning one of his knees and below, then Kazuma used one manatite to create and Earth golem, and now both of them were chasing the Demon King, then he destroyed the Demon King with a very powerful magic skill and he created an Earth Golem more powerful than the one Kazuma created (the Demon King had an ability that increases his allies stats if they are at a certain distance), chasing Kazuma now. After barely escaping, Kazuma used his dinamite to destroy the upper half of the golem, but now he was in a dead end, after some magic exchange between them, both got serious injuries, the Demon King got a hole in his other knee and Kazuma got a hole in his shoulder, lossing a lot of blood, he healed himself using Heal but he was already weak after that. Then, Kazuma was crouched (I don't know how to say it, because he was on one of his knees, but because he was tired) and proposed the Demon King a truce and letting the fight in a tie, then both of them would be teleported to the Demon King's castle and they would leave him alone, but he refused, so, after that response, Kazuma used his skill points to learn Explosion magic, to use it, Kazuma used his last manatite, killing the Demon King and himself in the process (he was gonna die either by the explosion since they were close or by the fall of the rocks above them after the explosion, making the recovery of his body impossible). Obviously there is more after that, but that is the end of the fight. I totally recomend reading the light novels, there are 17 volumes of the main story and there are like 4 Spin-Offs, one is for Dust, one is for Vanir and the other 2 are for Megumin, but in different times, one is a year before the main story and the other is between volume 9 and 11 I think, but I'm not too sure. Sorry for the bible I wrote, but I don't know how to make it shorter.

I think the issue with expecting the series to parody more recent isekai tropes is that it's an adaptation of a light novel that began in 2013. Each season covers approximately two volumes (the movie covering volume 5), and all five of those volumes released by the end of 2014, before the isekai genre really began to take off. It might have seemed like it was running out of ideas because it was rather ahead of its time, all things considered, and it probably would have fared better if the author had begun writing it in 2016 instead.
@CommunitySpIash3 жыл бұрын
The anime follow the light novels pretty well, and the first 4 volume is really no character development. Then volume 5 which the movie covers is when development happens for Megumin. Then volume 6 and onward gives Darkness development. Other chat get developed too. So if we ever get a season 3 it’ll show all the characters get development.

As a reader of the first 7 volumes of the light novel Konosuba (there are 17 in total) is based on I can say that the novels are much better story wise. Some key arcs are cut from Season 1 (based on Volume 1 & 2) that I loved in the novels, tho enjoyed it nonetheless. Season 2 (based on Volume 3 & 4) felt more or less what the novels presented. The movie about the Crimson Village (based on Volume 5) felt nice when I watched it in the anime, but they butchered around a third of the story from the novel that had nice character moments. Volume 6 and 7, some of my favorite ones, would make a great 3rd season (which will probably never be made, who knows), that would challenge our understanding of the characters presented before with great twists, have the most badass Kazuma action moments ever. Tho I don't argue the status quo being a problem overall, I also feel like the character hardly change volume to volume and some development that was made in one volume, was washed down in the next one, hope the second half of the Konosuba light novels will start to actually challange this status quo.

The phrase that best sums up my feelings about Season 2 is "Missed Opportunities". They had so many chances to stir things up without deviating too much from the set formula, to give us that "something new" that we craved, and indeed generally expect from something with a 2 in the title. Chief among them, Vega, the adjudicator who comes to arrest Kazuma for blowing up the noble's house at the end of Season 1; she is clearly shown to be an intimidating authority figure with an ironclad (and possibly downright erotic) penchant for law and order, but who becomes flustered when the tables are turned and it is revealed that despite her haughty show for justice she has no idea how the outside world really works as demonstrated by her being just as useless as anyone when hunting giant toads. This is comedy gold and the stuff that second seasons are made of! Have her join the main cast as Kazuma's parole officer, let her keep her passion for law while also making her the wide-eyed innocent city girl seeing for the first time what life in the real world is really like, maybe even shake things up for her by showing her own weaknesses (maybe she's a lightweight to alcohol or something). There's other points they could have worked off of too, like the revelation that Darkness really is a noblewoman and wasn't just faking this whole time. Heck, Season 1 set up a second character trait for Darkness that everyone, including the writers, seems to forget: She can't hit anything with her attacks, and this embarrasses her and in the good way. There's episode potential right there: have her secretly approach Kazuma to ask for sword training, show her trying to resist her normal urge for punishment while trying to raise her own combat capability to the level of "half-assed", show her making progress, end with a big crisis where Darkness needs to make the killing blow... and misses. Kazuma saves the day, everything more or less resets but with the hint that now Darkness has at least a chance to not be totally useless. But no, in the end they chose to toss most of these new characters and potential development to the side in favor of the same old jokes that were starting to feel tired by the end of Season 1. In a way, I'd even say that thematically Konosuba Season 2 isn't really a "Season 2" at all, just a straight continuation of Season 1 with nothing substantially changed between them. Edit the two together, cut out the intro/outro, and I defy you to tell me the difference.
@therightone57083 жыл бұрын
I have a diametrically opposite viewpoint of you. I really don't like when a show like konosuba tries to showcase "character development" bcoz these kinds of development are mostly for the sake of ticking a box rather than add to the experience in my viewpoint.
@Blankace.3 жыл бұрын
I mean you're stating your opinion on fact which is kinda iffy to begin with, you shouldn't be going into Konosuba expecting "How will these characters develope in this episode?" And instead go into it like "How are they going to fuck up today?" or "What kinda character interaction are we going to have today?". You are expecting from the show that it's not trying to give, it's like saying goblinslayer sucks because it didn't make you laugh. Another thing is that some of the things you bring up are setup for future gags or stuff that is going to have an impact later on.
@grayrook86373 жыл бұрын
So you make the Sunny in Philadelphia reference which I think is important. You keep going on about character development but you are analysing this as some sort of long running narrative. I think you should look at it from a sitcom writing perspective, in that case it is actually really on point. Sitcoms are ultimately circular in their story telling always coming back to the sitting on the couch discussing the moral of the week moment with incremental growth over long periods of time. To each their own but I though season two was fine.
@williamhestilow40213 жыл бұрын
Arkada is forgetting this is NOT an isekai action series. It is a sitcom. You do not expect heavy character development in sitcoms. You look at comedy, and season 2 to me was far more comedic in tone than season 1. The movie, however, dwarfed both series in comedy.

If you’re looking for a parody anime that doesn’t just stick to a status quo, might I recommend Machikado Mazoku/ The Demon Girl Next Girl? Starts off as a fairly simple magical girl parody, but as it goes on the characters become more fleshed out and the comedy evolves along with them. It’s only got one season so far, but the manga has enough for two more and it keeps surprising me with both the comedy and the surprisingly good character writing, especially for its two main leads.

I also agree with your point about beating the dead horse with repeatable jokes. However i don't agree with completing beating it into the ground. Development in comedy shows is done slow most of the time, that's just how it works and it doesn't help the fact that konosuba has pretty few episodes. But it's nothing we can do about the later. And development in season 2 exists, it's just focused more on world building than the characters, which is ok. Considering it's a fantasy the world also needs it's fair share ov development. But the thing this show needs the most in order to fix those problems while maintaining it's identity is more airing time.

Arkada, look, I love ya buddy, always appreciated your videos and your consistent quality on this platform, and I love your genuine opinions even though I may not agree with them. BUT I will just straight up say this. Second seasons ARENT SEQUELS. Subsequent seasons of any series of any kind are by and large, just extensions of the original season. Which means, they are not going to diverge too much from the tone established by the first season. A true sequel would be something that addresses that the original series's plot has already ended and tries to tell a different story after the events of the original work. Its the reason why Star Wars Episode 5 & 6 aren't really considered true sequels to episode 4, because like seasons, Episode 5 and 6 are still telling the same story, the Luke Skywalker Saga, and just laying out events in sequence to the plot. Thats why episode 7-9 are considered the Sequel trilogy, because it acknowledges that the preceding story has already finished its course and is now telling a new story for its run. Konosuba season 2 did and accomplished in what it wanted to do, like any good subsequent season, and that is just more Konosuba. Which includes over the top characters, ridiculous scenarios, and zany comedy. Sure there is an overarching "plot" as established in the first season. But any viewer watching this series knows that even after season 1, Konosuba's main priority isn't story, its being a comedic parody on isekai/fantasy. Not saying it will ignore its story, there has been progress as seen whenever Kazuma and co encounters a demon general, but for the most part, Konosuba is going at its own pace in terms of story.

I enjoyed season 2, but I also understand your frustration thanks to your comparison to "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia". The first 2-3 season of that series was some of the most hilarious T.V. I ever watched! After that, however, the jokes started getting stale. "The gang sinks to new lows" could describe most episodes of the series. I think the problem with IASIP and KonoSuba is the jokes weren't thought out beyond that first bit. Now IASIP did end up improving on this by giving the cast some very distinct issues and such that made it so they could imply in certain episodes that one of them MIGHT be a serial killer and the writers trusted their audience enough to not spoon feed the clues and let them see the evidence themselves. And the comedic payoff is that, no, Dennis is not a serial killer, but the fact that there was enough red flags that him being one is believable says A LOT about his character. I think that's what this series needs. Darkness' masochism is well-established. Why does she have such a thing for punishment? When did she learn about this kink? There's so much to dive in with the other characters. Just because they have one-note jokes doesn't mean their personalities can't be more complex.

There are other little details, but no big deals like for example at the end of the Alcanretia Arc it's shown that that the high priests of the Axis Order know that Aqua is really the goddess Aqua, but they decide to hide the information to protect her.

@@usuarionorepetido They also skipped the introduction of Wiz, or sped it up. The movie also skiped some things, and added new things.

@@DekArosaro The movie decided to skip a bunch of comedy to instead make the final fight like 15 minutes longer. Which IMO was a bad move.

@@AnimeFlyz i agree, alone the way how they got to the village was different, i missed the scene with the mandragora girl. And so much fun stuff in the village was just glossed over.

Less episodes allows to have more budget to more visual comedy apart from the lines themselves. The movie having even more money demonstrates that. The reason why i love konosuba is how jokes and characters are consequential The stuff that these people do because of how they are clashes around and produces (hilarious) consequences. There's character development even if you don't notice. At the end of season 2 you see that kazuma starts showing respect for Aqua and in the movie we see her caring for him when he's traumatized or when he pulls up his pants like a mother. It's the attention to detail in a storm of jokes that makes me love it, you could do a comedy show just throwing around them but having them built in an natural to the situations is what's difficult and them being top tier too? That's a masterpiece.

*Konosuba S1 was the best anime of it's year* Also *(...)rather stale character setups(...)it got stale rather quickly* jezus, either your standards for that year were low considering you think something that got stale quickly was THE BEST.....oooor you're going into season 2 (and even season 1) with the unfair expectation of "this COMEDY anime will also have some character growth or otherwise non-comedic substance to it" Like, i get it, YOU want something else, something that Konosuba is not.... and it's great that you are aware that you are in the minority...because...your analogy with Always Sunny in Philadelphia was great, but let me give you a better one: This is like ordering and drinking a cup of mint tea (or substitute with whatever spice you enjoy in your tea), liking it, then ordering a 2nd one that's exactly the same and complaining that it doesn't have cinnamon / ginger (/ substitute with whatever OTHER spice you enjoy in your tea)... Like come on man...people who order the 2nd tea, will expect it to be like the first one... you're the only one wanting extra spice in it. (inb4 "your analogy a shit cuz a sequel is about evolving, not ~being exactly the same~" --- if the tone of Konosuba S1 didn't dictate to you that it's commitment is to comedy, and nothing else... i don't know what to tell you mate)

i think the episodes are supposed to be fun and that is all. I actually somewhat agree with you - it does lack story development and glosses over important parts when it shouldnt. its not going to be a 5/5 or maybe even 4/5. However, the characters are charming, the jokes are a love and hate and that has created a fandom. It just wants to be likable and ask for nothing more. I came away thinking this is ok - its similar to big bang theory. Junk anime, but appeals anyway

I actually agree with you, konosuba was one of the rare stories I liked enough to go and read the light novel for, and while I didn't read everything it got old. Like really old, the jokes fell off as time progressed and there wasn't a significant story progression. The thing with the princess ended up feeling really weird, and something about kazuma as a main character felt unrelatable after a point. Him actually succeeding as a businessman felt kinda jarring.

It might just be the formatting of how many episodes they have. I think them skipping over the introductions of past episodes and only referring them in passing is unique but not as bad as it's made out to be. It could have been done to skip over stuff the creators didn't wanna touch upon or just because the source material skipped over it.

For some reason the jokes just haven't gotten old yet.

It had a bit pacing maybe lacking at the end, but the trial is a pretty good first main conflict to go in. And aquas cult, is character progress. And darknesses background is explored quite a bit. Even yunyun apears, well megumin doesnt get developement but both aqua and darkness develope. It just tells me jeff likes megumin and cares about her?!

What I've heard is the anime series was simply an advertisement for the light novels. So maybe we're expecting too much?

the second was similar to the first. I don't understand how one can like the first and dislike the second. I can't wrap my head around it. why was there an expectation for this series to progress more than a standard slice of life anime in a season? I would like more character progression too but i really never expected it beyond what maybe the movie held. i guess the imagination runs too wild sometimes? idk
