Since many commenters took issue with it, I removed "spoiler-free" from the video title. This review only elaborates on the film's setup and first 20 minutes of content, which I don't consider to be spoilers, but ultimately it's what you're all comfortable with seeing that matters. If anyone feels this will have an adverse effect on their movie-going experience, I apologize. Looking at your other feedback, it also seems like a lot of you would prefer pre-release reviews of movies like this to be shorter, more direct, and lighter on narrative context in general. In the event that I make another one, I'll keep that in mind, instead of trying to write in my usual style. I don't make videos like this often, and this is the first one I've done so far ahead of a film's release, so it's a learning experience for me, and I appreciate the feedback

Just watched the movie, was a riot and would definitely recommend! On the topic on the two aforementioned scenes, I wouldn't say the punchlines specifically have to do with transphobia or making fun of male rape victims. Maybe only on the surface level. When Kazuma nearly gets raped, it's funny because the guy who normally makes several other girls unconformable with his advances, party members included, is now on the receiving end of the stick. Not only that, but it's right after he had proclaimed it was his popular period. It's a scene where the irony is more of the punchline, rather than just "man gets raped funny lol." As for the second scene, Slyvia isn't even a trans. They're a chimera when mixed body parts. Even if Slyvia was a trans, Kazuma has every right to decline further advances if he's not into that kind of thing. Now for why it could be so traumatizing for him would more likely go to the fact that he nearly had another person's dick inside of him, a person who he willingly gave himself to before realizing that truth. But that's just what I think. I don't believe either of those jokes are sexist to the point of offensiveness.

@James Thomson agreed, i would also recommend this film to fans of the show. I really don't see the "transphobic" moment as Mother's Basement likes to put it as there was none. you can't have every moment when a person with both boobs and a dick that pokes the male protagonist and then being freaked out by it labeled as "transphobic" since i see that Kazuma is a straight (or CiS to those who like to use that phrase) guy that likes women, it's rational to believe he doesn't swing towards being gay or Bi by what we've seen in both the anime, manga and LN, and having a male organ being poked into his backside is going to freak him the hell out.

Then again I do like the lesson that Ishuzoku Reviewers taught about Simul Dubs... NEVER DO IT! I find it crazy the same people who complain about diversity, get a show like this and bitch about it for sexual appeal despite it has yuri, futa, corpse, scalies, furries, fucking fat, thin, and everything in between. Basically has more diversity than a diversity casted hollywood film, with ten times the quality. I honestly hope the anime does great and the manga gets a more panels. All of that stuff you said about the movie making fun of Kazuma for being traumatised by the attempted rape from the orc was literally your headcanon and not what happened in the movie at all. None of the three girls were laughing about it afterward, and crucially Aqua was genuinely consoling Kazuma which was a very rare scene indeed from her. Whether any person watching found it funny or not is entirely subjective but the fact is none of characters in the scene treated it as a joke whatsoever. I personally wasn't laughing but the amusing factor of the pervert who has sexually harassed women in the past now getting chased by lusting orcs during his "popular phase" was not lost on me, and I'm sure this is partly why the Kazuma was traumatised picture came in. Overall I think you were reading a lot into the scene and basically chose to interpret it in a really negative manner that wasn't really portrayed by the film itself. Dude... You're seriously reading too much into the Sylvia is a trap scene. Just because Kazuma expected her to be female but then is very troubled by the fact she has a dick while he's literally physically bound to her, you know, a demon chimera who could literally rape him if she chose to, isn't mean spirited at all. It's called sexual preferences and everyone is allowed to have them. Kazuma being traumatised by that is entirely his business. This wasn't a bad review, and I really appreciate your content in general you're a good KZbinr overall absolutely, but it seems like you must have watched the film only once and missed some pretty critical details of certain scenes which lead to you making negative assumptions about them.
@SoggySoup5 жыл бұрын
delta_reg Honestly I’d say a review that spends the first half getting all protective and unnecessarily offended at 2 jokes of what I assume is a demographic he isn’t even a part of than spending the latter half going “oh yeah and it continues to be funny” a fairly bad review. All while While saying that he doesn’t consider 20 minutes of the plot from a 90-minute movie spoilers a bad review.
@ThatLaloBoy5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I saw it twice in theaters and on KZbin again earlier today and not once were the girls laughing at him. Throughout the chase they were scared and even afterwords none of them brought it up. Darkness was unusually worried about their trip, Aqua was legitimately consoling him, and Megumin tried to cheer him up by talking about YunYun's "tattoo". And even the joke with Sylvia was a quick one that didn't linger too much on it and quickly moved on after Kazuma's trauma. Kazuma never brings it up again after she lets go of him. And while yes he did kind of manipulate her at the end, at no point did he ever show any disgust for her because of her gender; rather he was more focused on saving Megumin's family and village. That was the reason why he was fighting her. I just think he got caught up in the moment that he ended up either recalling the scenes differently or was too distracted to focus on what else was happening.
@KageRyuu65 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm kinda disappointed in MB for missing how genuine the group's concern for Kasuma was, and how at no point in time did the group turn it into a joke. Doubly so for somehow inventing the delusion he did. Not to mention that he so easily glosses over the fact that Kasuma was sexually assaulted by a hermaphrodite, and says it's transphobic because Kasuma didn't want to be anally penetrated, suggesting that men can't possibly rescind consent at any point in time or dare to have sexual preferences of their own. Especially after going on his short lived tirade about the often comedic portrayal of male rape victims not five minutes earlier.

Dude, Kazuma being turned off by finding out a girl was actually a futa does not make him transphobic. It just means he doesnt swing that way and was traumatized by having a male member rubbing against him. Its not the same level as being nearly raped but its still a trauma to an extent when you are unable to escape due to tentacles holding you in place. Transphobic would mean that if he think they shouldn't be treated equally or wanting to commit hate crimes or stuff against them. Your sexual attraction not extending to a certain gender or something does not make you a hater of that group. Doing stuff like that trivializes the terribleness of ACTUAL transphobic people in the world and media. @Ian R. Those were decisions of the anime, and while I wouldn't say the novel is completely blameless, it is certainly the anime's fault for needlessly magnifying those points.

@garbouwdeark91035 жыл бұрын
@@benpearson49 I'd agree that any humor from it is derived because it's at Kazuma's expense. At worst, the jokes can come off as uncomfortable (especially the female orc joke), but the main issue isn't really the jokes themselves. I'd say the main issue is that there's a group of Konosuba fans that tend to overlook the fact that Kazuma is a terrible person, in the same way that some Metal Gear fans think the franchise is free of "politics" or how some WH40K fans think its universe is showing off ideal forms of government. The number of "true gender equality" posts on r/animemes is proof enough of that. It sucks, because imo Sylvia was handled relatively well on her end, given how she made it clear that she had no romantic interest in Kazuma until he was pumped full of Charisma steroids. You’re not transphobic for being shocked that what you perceived was a woman turns out to be trans. People have their preferences. The joke is played as Kazuma being trash and being his typical misogynistic self and then having his expectations flipped on it’s head. Real transphobia is him being aware Sylvia was trans beforehand and then attacking her because of that fact and him being intolerant of it based on his own preconditioned prejudice rather than her just being a villain and being a general in the Devil King’s army. But typical liberal Geoff sees a sensitive issue and immediately resorts to white knighting 🙄
@awesomechainsaw5 жыл бұрын
Kevin Mairena Yeah I would agree. If I was really into someone sexually and had been fondeling their tits for the last five minutes. Then found out they had a dick. I would be rather traumatized as I’m not into dicks. Especially if they start rubbing said dick against my ass and give me no way to escape. Which Sylvia does, and that’s kinda male rape again or Atleast molestation. So Geoff’s comment is absolutely bullshit. Hell Kazuma actually gets over the fact that she has a dick rather quickly after that. Especially when she mentions she has the skills of a succubus.
@andimason33705 жыл бұрын
As a trans person these comments are so hard to read. Geoff's sensitivity around this kind of subject matter is one of the reasons I really appreciate him as a You-Tuber. I'm not moaning at anyone for their views on this film, but it does hurt to see the ridiculous amount of abuse being fired at him for addressing an issue that for many people it's important that it's addressed. Asking for viewer discretion around potentially distressing content is not censorship, it is not white knighting, and it isn't attacking those that like this film. It is certainly ironic however that people are so offended at someone asking for care around something that is potentially offensive.

I'm bigender myself and I still laughed at the second potentially offensive joke, but perhaps it was more a mix of 'yep, Kazuma continues to be a scumbag' and that they didn't dwell on it too long. It's not the best joke, but I didn't find the villain to be the absolute best villain, either...can a villain be summed up with the trope of 'satellite love interest'? Because that was what she was - I honestly don't remember much about her apart from her falling for Kazuma nigh-immediately and focusing in on that. Granted, this was a comedy movie, but you know. Taking that for what it is. The first one just seems like Kazuma getting a bit of a taste of his own medicine, considering before that he was jumping to go at Yunyun and he has an entire crisis about whether or not to jump at Megumin later. Not to say that that fully justifies it, but it at least proves that his 'popular phase' isn't entirely positive. If that's offensive, then I'd consider the fact that Megumin's mother basically sleep-drugs the entire party apart from Kazuma and leaves /her own daughter/ in a room with him alone at night entirely because Kazuma is rich far worse than that. (At least the orcs are killed. Megumin's mom? ....She doesn't even really get chewed out for that.) Again, however, I don't go to Konosuba for tasteful commentary. One of my friends described the series as 'Fantasy It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia', and I'd agree with that. All the characters are awful people and they do awful things. Don't aspire to be like them and don't take their views as absolute, because you /will/ find yourself in hot water if you do. But in the basis of the show, know that they're also seen....as awful people. So take that as you will. If you see one anime movie this year, in my completely bias opinion.....see Osomatsu-San the Movie. (I haven't seen Promare, and I don't really intend to until the hype goes down, lest my expectations get set too high.) But this is a close second best, and the screening I saw was lively as everything (which was surprising, bc I went to the second screening of the film and it was still packed). Good shit.

- contains some spoilers - He's been an asshole to everyone but he gets along with them if the time comes like Vanir or Mitsurugi. It didn't feel like it's shaming Sylvia for being trans. She's still a respectable character especially in the chaos that is Konosuba. The fact still remains that she's hot, benevolent and a capable leader. She's not even human since she's technically chimera so that's just a setup like the orcs being rapists since no males are left or the crimson demons being chuuni for being overpowered or Darkness being sexually charged because she's a sheltered rich blonde or the more obvious one like Aqua coming from a higher race but dumb. About the orcs, we've seen Kazuma being a molester in the tv show so what's a rape joke really. There's even a grooming joke when Kazuma gave food to Komekko. People's outlook won't change much anyway. If people aren't willing to be open-minded, they'll believe whatever they want. That goes for people who wants to be offended as well. There's even people who find rape victims disgusting as a partner and I'll respect that if that makes both of us less uncomfortable since I'm a rape victim myself. It wasn't really offensive or at least hurtfully so. Of course this is just my opinion. I'm not trying to speak up for everybody here.
@kylegreen67114 жыл бұрын
[e:LLUSIV ] Kazuma explicitly says that it's because Sylvia had a male organ - so it has nothing to do with her being a Chimera. And it's not just that one joke. The show takes that and basically says she deserves to die for wanting love in a non-normal way. It's what Kazuma uses to murder her at the end. How is that not terrible?
@ellusiv51214 жыл бұрын
@@kylegreen6711 Again, I'm not shutting down the distasteful representation but this is Konosuba. You think the sexualization of the other characters are not? My point at the end is that Kazuma can be a sexist character but YOU don't have to be to enjoy a piece of entertainment. That's all it is, a piece of media and it's not an objectively a bad movie. We should reserve getting outrage to actual hateful agendas because it cheapens the whole thing. There's a lot of people out there that cry fake concern for women but have other thoughts inside their minds. So Sylvia is either an offensive character, just another character or a justification and whatever choice people took, that won't change. To why they wanted to kill her, wasn't that because she was waging war? She was still one of the Demon Generals, I don't think it would escalate that much if she just retreated. Beldia and Hans died because of that as well while Wiz was spared because she was disinterested in the war. Vanir is still alive because he's stronger than he's letting on.

Good animation, even if it wasn't anything super spectacular (but exactly what I expect of Konosuba), some great humour throughout and a pretty nice plot, did feel like it fit right in with the previous anime season and OVAs. I do agree with the male rape played for laughs being rather distasteful, but was more ok to overlook it since it sort of goes with the theme of all Kazuma's misfortunes being treated as jokes. However I thought the trauma of the "female with penis" was more due to Kazuma(while being held captive) feeling something hard poking into his rear as it was revealed(implying possible incoming rape), and not so much the thought of it alone nor any trans phobia.

Thanks for the trigger warning, as a male victim of sexual assault the way we are treated in media reminds me all to well of the scorn and derision I received when trying to talk and work through me trauma. Now I just don't talk about it. I don’t need the additional shame and humiliation people are all to happy to heap on

@juamnji yes People do care. Saying "no-one cares" is just a way of trying to excuse your own terrible behaviour by pretending it's normal. That is blatantly apparent.

This review would be great but right now it's really bad. You talked too much about plot, overanalysed and missed the point of "rape" jokes. If 1/3 of your review is about some unrelated and false shit than I can't take your videos seriously anymore.

ok, but just having one more scene of kazuma moving his hand in a hipnotizing and flown motion was just awesome

SPOILERS: As a LN reader, I was mostly fine with a lot of what they cut like the tranqulity girl, but there were some intimate details I wish they'd included like Kazuma finding the manga and games, more about the attractions there instead of just the montage, the crimson demons fucking with sylvia more by acting like they're losing before teleporting away, as well as Yunyun's popularity after her big moment. I also thought the whole Sylvia coming back to live with Verdia and Hans was very odd, but her loving kazuma was an interesting new idea, as well as Hans and Wiz showing up was interesting. Also thought it was good of them to include some details from the explosions spin-off that we'd be unlikely to get otherwise, but that really worked in the context here quite well. It almost felt like the movie expected you to be a LN reader to some extent, as some details have their explanations removed with the joke still there so LN readers can enjoy the reference but others don't get it. Like Megumin being called a Tsundere, when originally it was because she was worried for her sister instead of Yunyun, but for some reason it was changed to being worried for the village and having changed her mind so.... why is she a Tsundere in the movie? But all this is really my only complaints. They delivered jokes extremely well, kept the style of the anime well, did a great job of adapting it overall, just wish it could have been a tad longer in general.

I agree with you and also didn't like how they cut the campfire scene near the beginning and some of the other kazuma and megumin scenes

Isn’t Tsundere just someone who decides not to show their true emotions? I don’t understand what the sister and YunYun stuff is about, but I don’t really see how it could make her a tsundere. I just thought they called her that because she acts like a tsundere, didn’t think it had to do with the situation.

Some people may complain about the jokes going “too far” or being “too traumatic” in certain aspects, but this is my favorite anime because they are actually willing to go that far and make jokes in all directions. As someone who has happened to have been traumatized, I like those jokes. We need to be able to smile, laugh, and move forward.

I think the ork joke was more "the shoes on the other foot now" as opposed to "haha, guy got assaulted", considering all the shit kazuma has pulled. Plus, Aqua actually comforts him, which is pretty out of character for her, implying that the characters recognize how fucked up the situation was.

The movie, for what I see, uses the plot directly from the Light novel; the anime community complains a lot about non-canon stories on movies and shows. Well, now that's what you get: From the novel to your screen.

I personally don’t mind those problematic jokes that are mentioned in this review. Now, that might just be because I’m a cis white male, but I have always taken the approach that things like rape or transphobia are NEVER funny, but JOKES about those subjects can be funny. I could be sitting in a restaurant one day, see a trans person get denied service for being trans, and Id stand up and tell the management team about the incident and offer to lend the trans person assistance if they wanted it. I would do this because I know it’s wrong to demean trans people for who they are! And I will always stand by them if they are in trouble. But at the same time, if there’s a joke about trans people, and the joke was intended to make me laugh about the subject, I’ll laugh if I find it funny. Not because I’m laughing at trans people, but because I’m laughing at the JOKE. And sure, that joke didn’t have to be said at all and there is plenty of other material out there that creatives can pull from, but I’d rather not stifle their process by limiting their tools. Granted: trans jokes are a BAD tool, but if they want to use it and it ends up poorly, that’s their (the comedians) fault. I swear: I’m saying all of this from a place of kindness and consideration. I don’t want anyone to ever feel unsafe or like they don’t belong. But I also want people to be able to know the difference between reality and a joke. One last time... RAPE and TRANS people are NOT funny. Jokes about those things CAN be funny.
@leofinns64645 жыл бұрын
I think the main problem with these two 'jokes' is that they punch down instead of up. When you make a rape joke if it has any chance of being a joke and not just the person telling it being disgusting you have to make fun of the rapist not the victim, punch up at the person with power not down at the person without power. Same with the transphobic shit later on. However even trying to show him as an asshole because of it will still fall flat an not really be funny, this set up isn't really a joke its just transphobic to its core.
@NunsenseStudios21105 жыл бұрын
LeoFinns Absolutely! I forgot to mention the “punching up” aspect of this kind of humor. You’re absolutely right about that! And I have a feeling the jokes in the movie are most likely punching down (I haven’t seen it, but Jeff says they’re like that). In which case, those jokes do need to be re-worked or just cast aside entirely. Long story short: I totally agree with your comment!!
