The fact that a large chunk of this anime seemed to be parody on other anime forms, with actual interesting characters, and a plot that always seems to be on track while never revealing too much, makes this one of my favorite animes. I liked the pacing in that it really made you feel like you were in school, and there was nothing to do, and though a conflict arose in every episode, it never felt repetitive, and you never felt sick of it. I think that's also what made the Endless Eight brilliant, so you felt it was an eternity long as well. In my eyes, it HAD to he insufferable to do its job, just like they HAD to make boring episodes or episodes that got off the ground slowly for realism and pace. The idea to make Kyon lead, as he's similar to the stereotypical secondary, "normal" sarcastic character that everyone favors over the real lead (a la Sokka in A:TLA or Ron in Harry Potter), was a fantastic choice. He's a lead that I think people could easily favor over the rest of the cast. And the rest of the characters, while parodies on their own medium, are great! Interesting! Flawed but lovely. It comes out a ton in Disappearance, too. The high school drama mixed with Haruhi drama mixed with the obvious jokes this show makes allows it to seal a spot for me at the top of my list. Most of the episodes has you dissecting characters and plot... and that's what makes it interesting, for me. The release order gives me a very HIMYM vibe. It matches the tone of this show. Try it out!

I'm willing to bet it's Okabe that my friend was talking about because recently I started reading the manga (because I miss it) and did some rewatching on some episodes (because fuck you, I love this series). Okabe was the teacher that stopped Haruhi and Mikuru from handing out their flyers for the SOS Brigade while wearing bunny outfits so I guess that makes him their supervisor (?) Also, he was mentioned in both anime and manga so LimaLimao might be right.

+yellow6ird Me Too. These shows always end so bombastically and revelatory that I feel I'm left with a big hole afterwards. It's kind of nice to have some longer resolution that doesn't leave the viewer having to glaze over the last episode for hours before feeling ok about the series ending. In fact, I kinda want more shows to take this approach.

This is, eight years old now, but I gotta say. Watched it both dubbed and subbed, broadcast order and chronological order (read: four times total). And lemme tell ya, I'm one of those guys who, from then on, *chose to rewatch it repeatedly in only dubbed chronological.* I don't care if I'm watching it in the unintended order, or if I'm not one of y'all purists; it brought me the greatest joy to watch it in order - otherwise I was most horribly confused.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is the anime with the biggest influence and impact for the future of anime in the last decade at least or more. It started the crazy light novel adaption boom that we saw in anime the last few years. This anime changed Kyoani and made them to what they are today. I actually saw the anime in broadcast order - because I already watched anime as they aired from 2000 - not much choice there to do it in any other way. It is a masterpiece.
@TheEastunder
@TheEastunder 10 жыл бұрын
Nah, i'd say that the anime that's had the biggest impact in the last decade would be FMA(2003). It gave Studio BONES the massive fortune it needed to release some of the most popular shows out there, it spawned a remake that many praise as the creme de la creme of anime, though i myself find it to be overrated, and other battle shounen anime have been trying ridiculously hard to take it's place like Hunter X Hunter and you can even tell just how much Attack on Titan takes from FMA.

i don't understand why this anime got so popular, in my opinion its good, but far from great. the overall concept of the series is amazing: "your friend is unknowingly god and to ensure the stability of the universe you have to keep them satisfied with their mundane life without letting them find out they're god". the premise was bursting with potential that i just feel the series didn't embrace or explore fully. instead it feels like they made an underwhelming attempt to deliver on the original concept and then to make it seem more interesting they aired it out of chronological order, which actually worked to a certain extent, but i was left feeling a little disappointed. and then season 2 didn't really add much off anything at all to the whole experience. the movie was much better though.

same, i enjoyed it for what it was but i dont think its more then a decent SoL anime. The story was a little all over the place for me, sometimes they would focus on the supernatural element of the show but switched back to a goofy episode about them forming a baseball team or whatever the next episode. They could have done a lot more with the premise, but i still think its a good anime. The movie is on a whole other level however, really loved it.

My biggest gripe with this series was the Endless Eight episodes. Watching the same episode eight times in a row was too much. I realize that each one had slight differences, but they were never big/important enough to make the episode worth watching. The least that they could have done was to change the second half of each episode to show the different ways the group tries to break the loop after discovering they're in one, but they don't even do that. The only differences between the episodes are insignificant things like what clothes the characters are wearing, or the exact words that come out of their mouths (even though the overall meaning is the same), or characters will take their actions at slightly different parts of the conversations they're having. Ultimately, none of these differences has any bearing on the story. To anyone who hasn't seen the series yet: my advice is to just watch the first, second, and last Endless Eight episodes. You see everything you need to, and won't miss anything important.

I totally understand why some people find Haruhi annoying. She is. But she's the only character in the show that you can't really put into your generic anime archetypes. You can sum up all the other main characters personalities in one word, whereas it's a little bit more difficult to accurately describe Haruhi. In other words: She's interesting.

+Superfield Well said. And if you actually watch the anime, Haruhi actually does even more questionable things than just the blackmailing the computer by sexual harassment incident.. For example, forcing people to practice baseball with her to the point where she put bruises this other girl. Or how the group have to enable Haruhi, to the point where they have to cheat to win this hard working baseball team just to entertain this godly spoiled brat. The rest of the show is pretty much people doing regular school stuff like reading in silence(and yes, you do watch them do that, with nothing else happening), or organizing school events that are really nothing different than you doing it yourself at school. I mean if you are the type of person who just sits and does nothing you might find it interesting. As someone who actually do get involved in these activities and in a much more involved and interesting way, I don't see a point of siting on my butt to watch some fake people do it. I find Haruhi to be too abusive and narcissistic (at one point she actually explains that she is depressed because she realized she isn't a special snowflake in the world. The only thing I could think of was "Girl, you need to see a therapist if you feel that the world should revolve around you.") and the rest of the characters being too much of a enablers to enjoy this anime. If you do find the blackmailing scene disturbing, don't watch, it doesn't get any better. The plot is pretty much about how a group of people have to endure and enable an abusive teenage girl who thinks the world should revolve around her so that she won't destroy the world.

OOOHH boy, endless eight... Cant wait to see what you have to say on that. I personally "loved" the endless 8. While it was indeed tedious to get through, and probably could have done with less than 8, say 4 - 5 max, it delivered exactly what that arc was meant to do, and I watched each and everyone all the way through.Would you rather they release as many episodes for the time span of that arc? HA!

LuckySharm I cant speak for Palavakala But I for the most part enjoy subs over dubs. Most of the time when i hear it in english it just sounds off. The voice may be too young or too old for the character. Or they just cant bring across the emotion when they are yelling are talking during an emotional part. In japanese I usually dont notice things like that. This doesn't mean I don't exclusively watch the subs. Baccano!, Rurouni Kenshin, and Cowboy Bebop all have awesome dubs.

LuckySharm In most cases I just find the overall quality of the Japanese cast better. In the case of dvd-s I try both and the I end up choosing the original dub. And I watch mostly simulcasts and tv versions, which are japanese only.

Am I the only one who didn't mind the endless eight? It wasn't lazy since Kyoto Animation reanimated different angles and shots and even some of the dialog was worded differently. As well, I felt it as more of a experience. It made me get more into the story and feel the emotions that the characters, especially Yuki, felt. It felt so good when it finally ended. That to me, was an experience that I was glad I experienced.

@Appledash99
@Appledash99 10 жыл бұрын
Yes there are plenty of shows that came out in the wake of the moe awakening that were amazing like Tatami Galaxy, Gurren Lagann, NHK, and many others. But as you had said "They weren't badly written, but rather written in a simple way" , most of those moe shows that followed Haruhi, K-on, and Lucky star were just that, simple stories. there's nothing particularly wrong with simple stories here or there but when most of the show that come out and selling are just cute girls being cute what does that say to the guys who are making money off of this. If they see that its so easy to make money off of it then they wont want to take risk and do interesting things. The medium wont evolve it will stay stagnant. The main problem here isn't really even Moe. Moe is really just a genre just like mecha or sci-fi.

1Eilatan not to dis Gigguk, but I never really gt into his style. He's a good reviewer, I can tell that; I wont lie, you don't get that fanbase without being good. But I just never felt like he was the person for me. Why? I don't know, some of it is that he comes across as higher-than-thou (while I think Arkada comes across as being more of you buddy telling you about an anime) , or he says things like: the best anime has already been made. but I can always try again, maybe not all his videos will make me think: die you UK jerk with an extreme case of superiority complex. That is a very impressive score, right there, and I agree with you pretty much completely. :D The only thing I disagree on is the dub, which from the small clips you showed made me cringe in embarasment. Original Japanese cast is full of big name professionals that did an absolutely amazing job bringing the characters alive, and giving them their unique personalities. But as always, that all comes down to personal preference, so I'll not bitch about it any more. Looking forward to your thoughts on the Movie (which I consider brilliant). And Endless Eight... Well, let's just say that you're not alone in your suffering. :/ Merry Christmas, btw. :P

I know THAT feeling. She's the kind of girl who so self important she treats her "friends" and people around her as a means to an end. In REALITY she'd be mocked for her beliefs, gossiped about for being a bad person, and ridiculed for starting a club NO ONE in their right mind would join and they'd bring up Kyon, Yuki, and Mikuru to make their points. The "God" thing was shoehorned in to make the anime interesting. I'll give the anime props for being unique but that doesn't make it a good anime.

I guarantee that most of the people in these comments have never read the light novels, which recently just ended. The anime only covered the first 3 or 4 books. There are 11 novels total (10 in America because the last two novels are combined into one). These novels get better and better as the story progresses. They become far more interesting and even more funny as the series goes on. Do yourselves a favor and read them sometime. I love the anime and its easily one of my favorites. It was one of those anime that got me into anime. Great review Arkada.

There was a time where I just seemed to keep hearing or reading stuff about this series (I think it was mostly because of all the shout-outs it got in Lucky Star), and as someone relatively new to the anime scene, I usually pick what shows to watch by what ones I keep hearing about (for example, there was a point in late 2012 where I just kept running into Cardcaptor Sakura, so I decided to give it a try). However, as I was contemplating checking it out once I finished whatever series I was watching at the time, I ran across the scene where Haruhi cons the computer club out of some of their stuff by framing them for sexual harassment. At that point, any chance of me ever watching this was shot in the head. Am I supposed to like Haruhi knowing she'd do something like that and not feel any remorse? Am I supposed to feel like the entire computer club had it coming, as well as the poor girl she used as a pawn in this scheme? Well, sorry, denied.

Superfield You're really exaggerating things. There is a reason as to why Haruhi acts the way she does, but it's explained later on in the series. Also, she does have compassion for her club members, as evidenced in her behaviour towards Kyon in the hospital and in The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. You just have to watch the Anime for some time before you get to look behind her facade. There is much worse shit in Anime than Mikuru having her breats groped for a few seconds. That's really tame compared to the things Berserk pulls off, for example.
@SuperfieldCrUn

Vivi Orunitia All I mean is that I got a TERRIBLE first impression of the show, so much that I really didn't care to look any further. It left a very bad taste in my mouth, and I've got a pile of stuff I'm very much excited about watching, so "giving Haruhi a second chance" is _very_ low on my priorities.
@viviorunitia7039
@viviorunitia7039 9 жыл бұрын
Superfield There are a lot of shows or games that start out rather mediocre, but later get really good. I wouldn't drop a show after the first few episodes just because it didn't click with you yet. Another example: Nier is very boring until you reach the middle of the game. After that, you get to see the backstories of the characters and the pacing of the plot is much higher than in the first half. It gets even better once you start a New Game+ because you get additional dialogue from the enemies that changes your perspective of the story. I wasn't really impressed with Haruhi or Nier at first, but dropping them would have led to missing out on two excellent stories.

No. I'm gonna get downvoted to hell, but I don't care how much you guys love this show. Even suggesting this as the best anime ever is absolutely absurd. I liked it myself, but the plot and nonlinear order is such a mess, and there are at least 9 episodes that were so agonizingly boring I almost gave up on the series. Idk how Arkada could give this show a 9 when the endless eight exists. Again, I like it, but this isn't close to the greatest anime. There's not even a satisfying conclusion or explanation for anything that happened in the series. (No, I have not watched the movie yet, and no, it is not relevant to this rant.)
@reguistrike6899

I would say watch the movie is REALLY relevant. After I finished the second season of this show it felt to me as a time waste and I got a little anoyed with the enless eight arc, then I gave a shot to the movie and my opinion changed completly. I kinda feel the movie makes the second season "worth" for the same reason Arkada explains (if not in this review in the movie one) and I perfectly understand the 9 that Arkada gave to this show. Despite this, I agree with you that this show does not deserve to be called "the best anime ever" because the downs of the plot quality at some points.

Regui Strike I finished the movie, which is absolutely amazing by the way, but that still doesn't have an effect on my opinion of the SHOW. The show on its own is just so lacking in plot and has so many throwaway episodes I still can't justify giving it a 9. However, Disappearance is 10/10, one of the best animated movies I've ever seen.

I bet Haruhi would have a blast, if she'd meet the Doctor, while at the same time questioning if he's truely an alien.

I found the movie more enjoyable than the actual series.

God I loved this but it feel a bit incomplete and unsatisfying in the end. There are so many things that have yet to be wrapped up, like why does she have these powers and what happened to them? She seems the same even though these 3 beings are following her around to observe her. I was also a little sad that Kyon and Haruhi never form had any sort of relationship besides the random kiss in the closed space, like why did they even add that part! There was a lot of built up storyline that dropped off I guess, esper organization went nowhere, data entity went nowhere, time travel both present and future wasn’t given reason, maybe I got too attached to this anime and hoped everything would wrap up😂

I'd love to start a conversation about this, but frankly I don't know which anime you're talking about since I named 2

man just calm down. These are 2 completely different types of anime. U just cant compare the the scores like that. How would even begin to to compare a love anime to a action. Some prefer action some prefer love some both. U liking SHINGEKI NO KYOJIN is your personal bias. Hey I loved attack on titan 2 but this anime was just as good in its own way. btw second season of attack on titan wont come for a while if it ever comes as it it is way 2 close to the manga;. trust me i know i read it.

GMAH111 He mentioned a movie... Let's take that into consideration. Also, I agree with you. SnK is good but it's WAY overrated.

If you're a fan of anime at all, this series is a must watch. The song at the high school festival is one of my favorite moments in all the genre.

Did you know that it was Crispin's idea to have Kyon say "Super size me!" when he was unhappy with what was in the script.
