HashSlingingSlasher How would someone develop in a scenario like this? He's essentially a broken person. He's being manipulated by his estranged father to fight monsters with other children who are equally broken. Realistically no one would develop in a positive way when put in that situation. And that might not make for the most interesting or likable character, it's pretty incredible to see such a real character.
@Guysean123410 жыл бұрын
HashSlingingSlasher Neon Genesis takes place over the course of about one year. That's not a lot of time for a person, a teenager no less to develop. In that time small amount of time he witnesses Toji get mutilated by his own Eva and kills Kaworu, the only person that ever understood him. You may argue that the amount of time doesn't matter and the amount of episodes does, but that's where I disagree.

I agree, in context of the show it makes sense. The problem most people have is in context for the genre it does not. Usually character development from tragic backstory looks more like things such as Guren Laggan. A lot of people who aren't religious can be categorized as atheist without identifying as so simply because religion has little to no meaning to them. In contrast, a self-identified atheist is so often because they have, as you said, a greater understanding of religion and have decided to reject it. A couple of things: Despite the *huge* drop in production value at the end, I really enjoyed the ending. Without spoilers, I'd describe it as being a fly on the wall for a stream-of-consciousness therapy session/interrogation for each of the characters. I think they did the best they could out of what they had, and it gave us (or at least *me*) a fair amount of closure to the psychological issues of the characters, which was what attracted me to Evangelion. Also, I don't think that the religious symbolism had that much of a bearing on the overall thematic structure, except for the Human Instrumentality Project.

*LOUD SIGHING* Okay everyone, gather around and let me explain why pilots are all 14 years olds. Now, this refers to the original series, and not the recent movies. WARNING SPOILERS So let me get one thing straight, there are no mothers in the Japan, or rather, there are very few to "mother" the 14 year generation. Why this, you say? Mainly since NERV collected a lot of them for testing, and since EVA were still in the BETA stages, they absorbed pieces of souls, and the human themselves. Two prime exampes are Asuka's mother, and Shinji mother, Yui. While Asuka mother did live, she was not in the correct mental state. She worked for NERV, and developed the EVAs, so it makes sense that she would pilot it. She devoted her time into this, and due to that, the EVA ( Unit 02 in fact ) absorbed a bit of her soul. The reason I say Unit two, is that when Yui died, Shinji was barely a toddler. Unit 01 was almost developed, so that meant Uni 02 was on its was after. In Asuka's flashback scenes, we see her as a young child ( around 4 or 5 ) so being placed in Germany were Unit 02 was developed, it makes sense. Now onto Yui. She was completely absorbed into Unit 01. Her soul was still inside Unit 01 while Shinji was piloting it. So when Shinji had that big realization that his mother was always with him, SHE LITERALLY WAS. She was trapped inside the EVA. The same with Asuka, but not to the same degree. Because in the "End of Evangelion" she is talking about how her mother was always with her. Because Asuka's mother's soul ( a bit of it at least ) was trapped inside the EVA. Now that was have the basics down, we can move on. Now there are two missing pieces. Rei and Touji. Rei is a being created from Yui, so it would stand to reason why the dummy plug system would work on Unit 01, and she could pilot Unit 00. The origins of Unit 00 are unknown, so we aren't really sure who was absorbed into it. Now Touji. He doesn't have mother, and the pattern so far elludes to that. It would make sense that in Tokyo 3 that a lot of the parents would work at Nerv. As for WHY the need the mother's souls, a mother provides comfort to a child. So it would stand to reason why they would pick the mother's soul. Also, they did this to give the EVAs a soul, since beforehand they were just robots. But adding a soul made it a being. It was NERV's plan from the beginning. Now that is just the strongest theroy. There are others, such as Second Impact took place 14 years before the anime, and all the characters are 14 years old ( duh ). Also the AT field is speculated to stand for "Absolute Terror". When Kaworu asks Shinji if he knew what an AT field was, he was trying to explain the physical barrier someone puts up when they are scared and or hurt. Like having an emotional breakdown, which all of them did. Some more than others, but, it still makes sense. Now this is just a quick overview of the whole thing, but the gist of it is "NERV killed the mother, or extracted the the souls so that their children could pilot the EVAs safely." The End
@UltimaOmegaZero10 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU
@moogs599210 жыл бұрын
Aside from this, another explanation is that after the 2nd impact happened they weren't sure when the angels would attack again, therefore they decided it would be safest for children to be the pilots, as they would have the longest possible life ahead of them, and it would give them the longest time coverage, thats my reasoning.

In what way did Shinji not grow a backbone? If anything, his problem was recklessness. The dude's almost always the first to volunteer going out on the front line. This is a kid who was so emotionally scarred and broken, that he could only find self-worth in throwing himself into combat (as it was the only thing his piece of shit father ever praised or even noticed him for). In this way he and Asuka are two sides of the same coin; only difference being she protects herself by lashing out in social situations rather than withdrawing (until that one sense of self-worth is taken from her and she becomes catatonic ... still the most tragic part of the anime for me). Shinji has one of the most complex character developments I've ever seen, and it baffles me how people dismiss him as a whiny little bitch. I'll take another Shinji over a simple-minded shounen protagonist any day.

(No Spoilers included) In my opinion, I thought that Neon Genesis Evangelion was brilliant. I found that the plot was incredibly complex and interesting, likely because I have a good understanding and knowledge of the book of Genesis (yet I'm not particularly religious, but I do find the concept to be worthy of thought). As an (somewhat) introverted person, I found it satisfying to contemplate the meaning behind this anime, for example with the large psychological aspect and the different perspectives on life that this show provided, I took a while to consider all of this, and I once again found myself captivated and interested in how things would progress. Another reason why I found this anime to be good is that I took my time with it, only watching 2 or 3 episodes at a time, with breaks to watch something more upbeat and to simply process the events (I should note that I watched the subbed version, so I had to focus more on reading, unfortunately - but from what I've seen, the subbed is certainly better than the dubbed version). And finally (yes, finally - I tend to ramble and get lost in thought too often), I made sure to take this slowly, so that any hype I had prior to going into this would dissipate, which, upon reflection, I would say positively contributed to my overall enjoyment of the show (P.S. I did find Shinji to be slightly irritating at times, but it was because he was so unusual did I find interest in "dissecting" his character).

I believe that this review misinterprets the ending of evangelion's original series (as I believe many people do). This is primarily because as the show starts as a mecha story with psycological elements mixed in it, one may think that the "religious" symbolism is only for religious people. However, I do believe that other is the case. In fact, I believe that the ending of the original series is the answer to the general philosophical problem that the rest of the story represents: the problem about the rebellion against unavoidable death established by an unkown cause (be it God, nature, Destiny...). In fact, in the original series it is never explained the angels origin. By building the evas, humans try to rebel against such death, trying to live BEYOND god, not as created beings but by "being themselves". Thats why, in the last 2 episodes, the "solution" to the rebelion is not an Super Uber Mega Mecha fight, but the realization of Shinji´s freedom from god ("I want to be me"). It is the absolute freedom, which is only understood in the end. Before that (as this review clearly shows), Shinji is haunted by GUILT, the guilt that results from the absolute responsability implied by this rebellion and independence from God. As such, man lives beyond god´s wishes, and becomes fully responsible for his acts and (Hedgehog´s dilemma), others. Evangelion shows how Shinji passes from the guilt caused by his inability to recognize or accept his responsability as man-beyond-god, to the final realization that in such responsability of himself lies absolute freedom. The fact is that this interpretation (that I believe to be correct) closes the philosophical under-plot of the show, while many people expected only the mecha-plot ending or a clear ending to the action plot. While I understand that the original series ending does not give closure to such plot, I believe that gives a clear view of the general plot as a whole (and ultimately, the meaning of the whole story: the event of human rebellion against god).
@cobytang4 жыл бұрын
I agree with your view. The original ending is the thing that made it a legendary show for me. T said if Shinji could face his flaws and become a better human, then you can too, so keep your hopes up. Also, Shinji's mother literally said, answering to Gendo wondering if Shinji could live through the hell that's post-second impact Earth, she said if you are still living, you will have the chance to find love and the goodness in life.

Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly drove me to suicide. Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since. I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the isolation of the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive. Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day. Sometimes I hated myself because I failed to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I would beat myself further for failing to prause what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic. I sought emotional refuge in the Evangelion fandom on social media, hoping they’d understand me and provide me with answers that would grant me peace of mind. Instead, they downplayed my trauma, going so far as to spread a rumor of my past to shame me of my mental illness, spiraling me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over a year now. I just wanted Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else mattered. There’s a reason why I keep coming back to Evangelion; something that reminds me of nothing but pain. I want to prove to myself I’m not crazy for feeling this way, that Evangelion really did force me to relive my trauma, that my depression is not just a figment of my imagination or another anime plot point. I want to feel that my fear and resentment towards Eva is justified. But the fact I’m the only one I know in existence who’s been traumatized by an anime makes me feel like I really am crazy. But finally, with Evangelion 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way. But if things hadn’t turned out that way, I wouldn’t be here today.

Thanks for sharing your story. I remember feeling sympathy for Shinji since I felt he was trying all he could. I remember feeling lonely. I also remember sympathizing with Shinji for all the effort he had to spend without getting things in return. It all felt very familiar for me. The cello scene because I played guitar, the relations. When I saw other people describe Shinji as 'Whiny', it felt like a personal attack to me. I've never considered suicide, but I remember it all felt very emotional at the time since I didn't have answers for myself either. Anyway, I wanted to say that I don't think you are crazy by saying you are traumatized by some piece of media, I think it's very understandable. I watched your 'story of my life', thanks for sharing that as well! I hope you are doing fine :)

I'm a Christian and most of the religious symbolism I either didn't notice or didn't think was important. What made this show truly brilliant was how it deconstructed the mecha genre and explored the complexities of the human mind. While it isn't really the most entertaining series, it's certainly one of the most brilliant ones. I must also say that I think that the last three episodes are spectacular and one of the best endings I've ever seen. I've yet to see End of Evangelion though, so I can't make that comparison.

I personally don't find Shinji to be whiny. As someone who was also depressed at the age of 14, I thought he was a really good portrayal of someone who's going through a period of depression at that age.
@beflygelt8 жыл бұрын
there is not a whole lot to "analyze" about the religious symbolism, it's just a stylistic choice the creators did without much depth to it. It just parallels concepts in the story with concepts in the bible. They're references that make the story seem more universal, and more deeply rooted in human history. It was a very clever choice although I personally think they overdid it a bit with the endless crosses at times (comin from someone who still considers Evangelion to be possibly the best anime of all time)

I feel ya, have had people get angry at me because I am not personally a fan of the show. I find there to be a huge distinction between understanding the importance of something and finding it enjoyable. Eva is an incredibly important anime that has in many way shaped the anime scene after it...but I find some of the characters to be very annoying, selfish or uninteresting. And the religious symbolism is a lot of times used more because it looks cool than because it has a point.

Some wierd religious allegory or something. What confuses me is why they would fight off the angles only to trigger the instrumentality project? Like wtf NERV and that Seele group or whatever they are prevented the end of the world and now they just destroy the world in their own hands? Thats just fucking pointless. I love evangelion and im someone who watches a lot of anime but doesnt really like the genre. Its sooooo rewatchable but i can understand why some people hate it--the fanservice, the emo "its deep high iq required" shit, asukas insanely high pitched voice acting and cringeworthy over the top behavoir, and the fact its basically david lynch: the cartoon.

I literally just finished watching the series. Where exactly is Shinji this whiny wimp everyone says he is? He does what he's asked almost all the time. He almost never runs away and when he did, it was after his piloting was currently done. He never abandons his duty when it's required and he even picks up the pieces when others fuck up. It's everyone else who has the massive flaws. Honestly, I was disappointed, not confused at the end because it tries to force characteristics that were pretty minor or nonexistent. What doesn't make sense is how he is treated by others, particularly the adults. They NEED him, not the other way around and yet they act like tools saying go away if you don't like the horrible things we force you to do. But this is for the fate of the world, so why even give him the option? They literally could not have survived without him.

After I have watched the entire story, I can definitively say that Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the best anime ever made. The plot is certainly interesting, with all the intrigue of Seele and Gendo while seeing our main characters try to save humanity when in reality nothing they do can stop the Third Impact (spoiler to End of Evangelion, sorry). The characters are the real thing that thus show excels at, giving even minor characters development and an interesting psyche (examples: Toji Suzuhara and Ritsuko Akagi). Even the main villains have a fantastic reason as to why they will do everything that they do. Pause: Gendo Ikari is not a bad character, he is just someone who has only ever loved one person and will even end the human race if it means that he can be with Yui again. The main characters also get a lot of development and insight into their psyche, with the best of the bunch having to be Shinji. An absolute masterpiece that I'd say is required viewing if you want to know what the anime medium can do. P.s. For the love of God, please watch End of Evangelion after finishing the series. It answers almost all unanswered questions and provides a feeling of closure to this great series (the last two episodes are not bad, but End of Eva is a much better conclusion.

Also, if you say Shinji's character type is overused, then you have to understand that even though it has been used much since then, Shinji is still one of if not the best portrayal of that character, with legitimate regions as to why he acts the way he does.
@RexZShadow8 жыл бұрын
I can't find any good reason for him to act like he does beside being a total selfish bitch. Which undercut the emotional drama when I kinda hate his guts but that's my personal view on it. Problem with me is that human are known to adapt to situations and Shinji does not adapt period and refuses to adapt even when the fate of the world is on the line. That is in fact not common or realistic if we talking average human beings. So we are focusing on the total bitches of humanity and trying to make me feel sympathetic about them is a lost cause XD
@lilyvalentine92948 жыл бұрын
Zehao He always complains because the world around him is unfair. His mother died; his gather doesn't care about his life at all (only his abilities to pilot hi eva); all his friends die and collapse around him; and all of this is combined with the fact that he is fighting for an organization that claims to save humanity while acting to destroy it. When he states that he is worthless, it is referring to the fact that there is nothing he can do to save the world, as either way it will die. All these are good reasons as to why one would be depressed or feel worthless, as the world is cruel and there is nothing within one's individual power to prevent the suffering and evil around them. This is an extremely realistic aspect to the show, as in the real world suffering and evil happens all the time within the world. pretending like no one complains about this is clear denial, as almost everything you hear on television (and even in day-to-day conversation) is people bitching and complaining about their everyday lives, which pail in comparison to the problems that Shinji Ikari has to face. However, despite his depression and worthlessness, Shinji still is able to connect with people and push through his problems (showed in both the middle parts of the series and in the end of evangelion). I am not aware of any part of Shinji's character that is not realistic and interesting. He is one of the best protagonists in anime in my opinion (only toppled by Reinhard von Lohengramm).
@RexZShadow8 жыл бұрын
Vincent Proctor Human are extremely adaptable creatures, far more than people think. Many people in way shitter situations than Shinji have manage to grow the fuck up. Shinji's issue is literally him being a moody brat. Aside from his family issue (my god so many people probably dealt with worse) he had a pretty well off life before the show. And even through out the show he made friends (his two team mate) and people who care about him (his mentor) and even friends at school. But no he still acts like the world is out to get him coz that makes him tragic and give him excuse to lay the blame on something else.

However, you have to be careful when you're importing anime / anime merchandise, as sometimes you'll get counterfeit items. Unfortunately as trippy as some of the scenes in the latter half of that book got I wasn't NEARLY prepared for the latter half of this series. they tried to make the anime unnecessarily complex while the story was not, it's not a bad story but it would have been much better if they just told it in a different way instead of putting weird scenes together which are sometimes not even correlated to each other, just so anyone in the end is like "hmm... it was hard to understand this anime, it must be pretty damn good" It's not a bad anime, but c'mon. - 7/10 (imo)

Yet another great review. Although the financial problems were pretty obvious near the end I'm not sure how much of the final two episodes would've been different. Especially since the "End of Evangelion"-movie looked more like Anno trolling his fanbase and saying:"So you want a different ending? Here I'll give you an ending" and then lured the viewer with one of the most fantastic battle scenes in anime history, just to dump them straight back into introspective mindfuck-city during the second half of the movie. Although weirdly enough I understood the ending of EoE much better than that of the show. The only thing in this review that I can really disagree on is the soundtrack which to me has some of the most memorable tracks in anime history, with the various numbered "Rei"-tracks, "the Beast II", "Thanatos" or even the more relaxed character themes from the beginning of the show, or the hauting/creepy ones from the more mindfucking scenes. But well maybe that's just a difference in personal musical taste, as for example the Baccano OST does absolutely nothing for me, and yet everyone else seems to love it. Also my judgment concerning this show is very clouded, since it has been my absolutely favourite Anime since I started watching, and probably still is.

Here's a short review of your review: I like your relatively high production value, objective reviewing skill, interesting facts added and a bit of jokes. My pointer made it to the Subscribe button and I clicked it. On a side note I saw Evangelion in it's entirety about 8 years ago, a rather dark time of my life since I suffered a severe depression and though of ending my life. I sort of identified myself with Shinji because he was pretty similar to me. The final episodes brought my brain into a state of euphoria and made me rethink my life in a different way. I won't say that Evangelion cured me of my depression because that would be bullshit but It did make me reconsider certain things and gave a slight nudge into the right direction. For this I think Evangelion id one of the greatest anime shows that I have ever seen because it's rare for an anime to trigger strong emotions in me, especially with the newest shows that are coming out.

Yes, THAT was devoid of any deep subject matter. Everything else though; a creatively drawn out narrative that really just boils down to growing up and accepting yourself for your faults and weaknesses. You can dislike the show and that's cool, but when you say "any deep thought about it will only be a rationalization from your own mind" you come of as such a pompous bigot that resorts to calling people who do find deeper meaning in things "fags". Not gonna lie, hated Asuka when I first saw her in 2.22 (different story, I know), but the bed scene made me realize she was very similar to Shinji who I related to very well. But the rouge Eva scene in that movie completely made me feel pity with her and made me a fan of Evangelion. Having watched the original series as well, I think this scene was much better in the movie. Shinji is hit or miss, some people want to give him a hug and others want to take his lunch money. As a fan who can relate to being an antisocial teenager, I fall into the former.

Breaking this argument now. Some guy showed the real reason why anyone would dislike the show perfectly and their statement showed it clearly. Cin Runners "theres this thing called character presentation. depression & low self-esteem can be presented in way that does not frustrate or annoy the viewers, this show has poor presentation of its characters that alienates a large majority of viewers plain and simple." In my opinion viewer, your "view" is plain and simple, but it makes sense why you would think like this. Now turn it around and ask yourself, what is the Character presentation trying to portray? What is the difference between the people that like Shinji? and the ones that don't? The people that like Evangelion and like Shinji are the ones that come to accept that Shinji Ikari is a true representation of a teen who's chronically depressed and has abandonment issues & E.T.C. on the disorders. The others who dislike the aspects of Evangelion are the ones who get "annoyed" by the fact that Shinji and many other characters/messages are "over-the-top" and seem pretentious as if they were trying too hard and now it's just annoying. Here is where being open-minded helps, coming from personal experience Shinji without a doubt is a representation of people with disorder's, I've dealt with so many hospitalized patients who were going through these similar traits and my GOD they were annoying and "OVER THE TOP". Have you ever met someone who has a chemical imbalance and literally CANT be happy? Some of the most annoying people I've ever met, and to me it seems like a cycle. As if they could actually help themselves and that it's their own fault for being sad. So in my opinion and analysis, OF COURSE these people hate Shinji and think Evangelion might be this bad or pretentious. Because they don't understand what it means to be that fucking crazy. And i remember one other person said it perfectly, when we scream and say "Im tired of all these gung-ho character's who are 2-dimensional!" and then turn around and say "Well damn, this is annoying i don't like this bitch kid shinji" when they do get a character. not knowing that this is how people with disorders and especially in a situation like SAVING THE WORLD would act. Then some people like to tell me well yeah I know its a true representation, i know its deep....I still don't like it. Now your just hating something with no logical/rational reason and your an idiot. Sorry friend 2deep4u -___-.

Uhm, they made an entire point of what happens when Shinji actually grows a backbone and develops an ego the size of Seto Kaiba, and he consequentely arrogantly runs in without respecting the risks and gets himself disembodied. Regarding the ending though, I think you cannot consider the show without the context of End of Evangelion, especially since it was always intended to be part of the show (During the final episodes we see preview imagery of the events of End of Evangelion as well as setups for those events). I find that the best way to enjoy the show is to regard the end of the show as the psichological parallel to events in the actual world, which are covered in End of Evangelion. We even see a few scenes during the ending episodes of the show, which transition into the events of End of Evangelion, such as seeing Asuka in the pilot seat of the 02 during the final episodes, which means that it takes places while Asuka is in that cockpit during EoE. And they actually adress in the anime itself why adults cannot pilot Evangelion and what happened when they initially tried putting an adult in there, and why it has to be specific children for specific EVA's
@BoySamusMetroid11 жыл бұрын
See, I feel all of the people complaining about Shinji missed the entire point of the anime. Eva focuses so much more on the human condition and deep emotions rather than plain action and fighting. Going in and expecting action rather than an emotional study is a mistake.

a great example of budget cutting in the ways of fan service and no animation is in episode 20. Do not worry this is not spoilers at all but if you don't want any info at all then don't read the rest of this comment. Anyway, misato is having sex offscreen while all you can see is a table with an ash tray and beer on it. This goes on for a minute and a half with no animation and just sex noises. It's just bad. Just bad.
@Elalmadebudin10 жыл бұрын
It's worse considering that the anime shows you 14 years old girls totally naked.
@Yimo9210 жыл бұрын
Elalmadebudin that parts weren't really just fanservice, because everytime a character was naked it had a reason. Like showing that Rei doesn't know what embarrassing is in the beginning or in instrumentality to show clearly the point that they were in a form of existance where nobody could say where someone begins and the other one ends. I can't remember one "nude" scene where it was there ....just because fanservice

Vetras Tsuriai The bath house?
@Yimo9210 жыл бұрын
If I remember that right there weren't any body parts shown...just their faces. And even there that scenario showed a sudden trust that Shinji had towards Kaworu, that was very unusual for a character like him.
@comiclover9910 жыл бұрын
Vetras Tsuriai Wrong scene although that the one you are thinking of is very obvious fan service too but easier to give a reason for. I meant the one early on in the series with Asuka and Misato are in the bath house together. Their tits are only covered and it is insinuated that Shinji gets a boner listening to them cleaning each other.

The last two episodes of the eva series was the only thing that made it truly unique, tell me where you have seen anything like it before, I dare you.
@lazarinth578210 жыл бұрын
D4haka97 Haha, I'm glad you edited out your straw man argument but I still got it in my email. Saying it doesn't make sense either shows you have listening problems or you don't pay attention, what's going on is 'literally' narrated out for you by the characters during the metaphorical portrayals. These 2 episodes have more psycho-analysis than the entire 74 episode series of Monster and my dare to find anything like it has never been met, that's why it's unique from other anime.
@lazarinth578210 жыл бұрын
D4haka97 Have you ever done or gone through psycho-analysis before? That's pretty much what it is, the doctor asking the patient questions and confronting what they did and the patient whining about their life. I see this everyday and I have never seen a more accurate portrayal in any anime, or any film for that matter. Why? Because Hideaka Anno, the director of NGE, went through this himself. Losing it's budget was the best thing that could have happened to NGE, it allowed the true essence of it to come to the surface without the need of fancy animated gimmicks. But if that's what you were wanting go watch any of the hundred other mecha anime out there, they're all the same.
@lyss258410 жыл бұрын
Christopher Keene well i dont know what Hideaka did and i dont actually give a shit but d4haka is right NGE is shit it doesnt make any sense also to inform you i watched the 3 last episodes 3 time and still i couldnt understand wtf was going on

D4haka97 Well if you not going to try why did you even make that comment? Not only are you lazy for not coming up with a rebuttal but you're a time waster for making people read about your lack of rebuttal.

This entire anime should be called “therapy, these kids really need to get some”. Like I know that there’s been a kind of apocalypse on this Earth but like did every single psychologist die out in that apocalypse lol?!

Contrived shit like that is what really makes it a frustrating watch, not the characters
@samtoo20105 жыл бұрын
The lack of the fund is probably the best thing that could happened to the show, because it forces the show makers to develop something More meaningful, it creates the opportunity for the show makers to put more details in each character’s self image and thought. Which gives us more time to think our self in real life and what kind of person should I become. I give this TV show 9.5/10, rebuild DLC 8/10
@TV0R1110 жыл бұрын
I watched the entire series, End of Evangelion, and the first 2 rebuilds over the span of 3 days. partway through i took a free quiz online that said i possibly have Moderate to Severe Depression now. so even though its a good series, perhaps watching it all in a very short period of time isn't too healthy
@Clebardman9 жыл бұрын
You're being way too harsh with some aspects of the show and extremely forgiving with the dub (It's atrocious). The soundtrack deserves much more praise (Rei 1, Hedgehog's Dilemma, I Shinji, Eva-01, Borderline Case, Infantile Dependence Adult Dependency, etc...). Nice catch with that James Bond OST BTW. There are only two really long stills I can think of (the train and Kaworu's death), both never bothered me, and I really want to point out that stills are a valid staging method, a lot more than the Michael Bay-esque CGI-assisted flying cameras we get far too often these days. The ending was heavily influenced by The Wall's trial scene wich on my book is a good thing. The last 2 episodes were missing something back in the days because they don't conclude the story, but since EoE's release, I really don't understand the hate they get. Regarding those two last points, I don't know if you like Carpenter's movies, but sometimes a slow pace and low budget CAN be a good thing. The religious stuff has pretty much nothing to do with the anime, story or anything and was pretty much put in for the lolz according to Hideaki, no need to talk about it more than 10 seconds. And are you really, REALLY blaming Evangelion for it's "fan-service" ? Seriously there's 2 embarassing jokes in the anime and both are in the same episode, very little nudity and Hideaki goes berserk on people that like to fap over 14 years old anime girls in EoE. Sometimes real people have to take off their clothes, you could argue that we don't need to see them after a shower but it's a show about adults having adult problems and teenagers learning to deal with the same problems, ofc it's going to talk a bit about sexuality, and it almost always makes sense (14 years old Shinji more interested in Misato's breast than the angel and the N2 Bomb during the first episode :p)... Would you consider the couple scenes where Re-l (Ergo proxy) walks around in panties "fan-service" ? Because I sure don't. To conclude, that review seriously sounds like you disliked the show, then you gave it 8+... Wut ? Wanted to bash a cult show to prove something, but not the shitstorm a low rating would have brought ? Don't get me wrong, I'm not mad because you bashed one of my favorite anime, but it seems to me that you were only interested in the first layer of a seriously complex show, despite mentionning the fact that it was a deconstruction of the genre. Symbolical wombs and amniotic fluid, manipulation (intentional or not), the difficulties that arise when you try to do something to get praise (and the questionability of that motive), the need to be accepted and accept others as you/they are and not as you want them/you think they want you to be, the difficulty of understanding someone's motives, even oneself, etc, were somehow swept under the carpet. man you could have at least mentionned that the "robot" somehow bleeds 500 liters of gore in the first episode :p. BTW, sorry if it's hard to read or filled with typos and grammatical error, I'm not a native english speaker ;)

A cruel angels thesis and fly me to the moon (there are a couple version's) are brilliant osts especially for the time of release (we have to remember j-pop was literally in its infancy at the time and the songs were being produced by anime VAs). Misatos VA who happens to be the VA for sailor moon was a prominent singer and helped produce and sung many songs from the ost and for the time of release (you can't compare complexity of beats and even the extensive range of voice acting ability from today as opposed to 25 years ago) these were pretty special. Hiroyuki Sawano is literally a god level composer but I'm pretty sure if you asked even him he'd appreciate a cruel angels thesis for what it was at the time

I think giving it "Certified Frosty" is a bit much. Rarely, have I watched a series that so shamelessly runs its audience around in circles while leading them on for a payoff which never materializes. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely not a bad series and it certainly has many qualities I find groundbreaking. However, I think there are too many flaws for it to be included among the greats.
