Haven't gotten to the "spoiler room" part, but I must say that although the murder mystery part was too predictable for me, it seemed like the show was really about Satoru getting another chance to live. Like at the beginning he was alone, no friends, working as a pizza guy and at the end, he learns to care for other people in a genuine way and is surrounded by people who love him and has a successful job. Looking at it from that angle, I was a bit less disappointed by the predicability and just enjoyed the ride.That's why I ended up liking the end of the last episode. He wasn't alone any more, and it was because he made a point of keeping the people around him from being alone too when he got his second chance. I guess it just turned into more of a personal story rather than focusing on being a sci fi/murder mystery.

honestly the predictability of the mystery was......... oddly refreshing most mystery shows do some extremely convoluted ending that it gets to the point where instead of having my mind blown i just stare at the screen saying to myself "really now, are you kidding me" so yeah i don't mind the mystery of this show in the slightest

I found half of the show to be the entertainment of the killer being in plain sight. Like, have you ever watched a mystery the second time over and got a laugh over some detail that is only relevant when you know the guy is also the murderer? I got those moments the first time through watching it, something really unique actually
@BUGHUNTER6
@BUGHUNTER6 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I'd rather have the identity of the killer be a little too predictable than seeing that kind of an ending again. It's kind of annoying when the killer is revealed, but then you have to go through this long explanation. Just make the puzzle pieces fit, it's more important to me anyway.

If you see it from a different angle, it doesn't make it 10 times better but you can see what the story attempted to tell. It's actually a 'coming-of-age' series with a unique take. Mystery, Thriller and other perceived elements are just there to make it flashy. Eventually, it was a story about a man who took the wrong path, he heard the words of a girl and witnessed the death of his mother, which ended up inspiring him to go back to his past and fix his life, in the end, he achieved what he wanted in life (through means that we all wish we had) and he was finally happy. It answers the great old question : what if you could go back in time to do it all over again? with this distracting twist of a murder
@Gatekid3
@Gatekid3 8 жыл бұрын
But when you ask the would you do it all again question, that usually implies you have to do it ALL again. It was never implied satoru had to relive his whole life. That really takes the sacrifice of that question away.
@MyMainMan90

Gatekid3000 It may have done a bad job there but I just watched the first episode again and I noticed something. -He was a failure as a manga artist -He was at the point of questioning life -His Mom was a smoker and binge drinker -She also showed little care for him when he was in the hospital. -It appears that he has no contact with his friends. They really wanted you to realize that things weren't working for him then. Then the final episode shows that his story as a child was about being who you want to be and never giving up on that and we got to see the results.
@Gatekid3
@Gatekid3 8 жыл бұрын
Nathan Piper i realize that, but the whole disappointing final confrontation kinda takes away from that very important point. I wish it were longer, becuase i originally thought it was going to explore each of the 3 victims almost like.. arcs, like. Cool saved this one, now spend some episodes trying to save the second one, you know, more of satoru working to save them. But what we got was still great, so.. im fine i suppose

I enjoyed Erased. I thought the ending fell flat. Not because of the reveal of the villain, it is predictable, but because of the tone. There was a real shift in tone that felt odd to me. I would recommend the show but I may not watch it again for some time. His Mom is the best character. I'd watch a show about her alone.

SPOILERS! I think this show isn't supposed to be a full-blown mystery (although yes, certainly has some elements and tropes) because revealing who the villain was actually was an after thought - sort of tact on because it was an expectation! The show was more about friendship (saving them), remembering one's childhood and re-living it and correcting making decisions you wish you had done. Thematically the show didn't seem to care all that much about who the killer was but rather who he was killing. Someone in the comment section stated how it seemed more like a superhero vs. villain plot (with a slice of not knowing the villain's identity fully. I think the show actually could have revealed (to the audience) who the killer was much earlier and it would have been just as interesting if not better - it would have added more tension in the scenes with the teacher. The reveal was almost a forgone conclusion by the end, and it was, I think, intentional because that wasn't what drove the story in the first place, or why you tuned in, it was rather a small carrot among much more interesting carrots. While yes the ending wasn't nearly as satisfying as it could have been, the reason to watch the show isn't about who did it.

I was personally hoping the would go deeper in the time travel aspect of the show, and maybe continue with the show and have the impact of the main protagonist going back to protect everyone impact what the future of him and his friends became. I think that would've saved the show from such an anticlimactic end and answer questions that were looked over before. But you work with what you've got I guess. For a 12 episode show, It was worth the watch for sure!

I think you kinda missed when it was heavily implied where his powers come from. One of the first aspects of Satoru's character that we're introduced to is his repressed guilt of not being able to save his friends from 15 years past. So much so that the first thing we see him do is selflessly save a kid from a truck, to his detriment. That is not only the entire show in a nutshell in the first 5 or so minutes, but it is implied to have come from his own will to undo the past and save people. So much so that when he managed to fix the past, he couldn't rewind time anymore. And I do think that wanting a more detailed explanation is completely unnecessary and deviating from the point of the show.
@godot8694
@godot8694 4 жыл бұрын
That's not completely true. Yes he saved his friends but the killer took who knows how many more lives in the meantime and he couldn't stop him. It was his fault. That was enough of a guilt to let him rewind time one last time so that he can catch him and live the life he deserves with Kayo

@@godot8694 I'm not sure if you already know this by now / or even cares anymore ( since its been 2 years since you last commented on this thread ), but the killer did admitted to Satoru that once his plans were foiled by him that he started to loose his lust for kidnapping for some time . He even mentioned something about channeling that old urge he had for their next encounter - which means that Satoru did succeeded in preventing another string of murders/ kidnappings that would've already occurred under the original timelines. ( I'm not even sure if there even was any activity happening before Satoru came along . and even if there was , he cant be blame for the murders that take place before the time that the show mainly takes place at - since he would probably be no more then two sets of chromosome in each of his parents bodies at that point ) .

Kayo's storyline was definitely the best part of the show. Like you said, the story really didn't focus on the mystery itself but how Satoru was trying to help Kayo, and it was very well written. However, after that arc was brought to the closure in ep9, it felt like the writer just realized that "damn we still have these two other girls running loose and a murderer to catch", so he crammed all the remaining bits and pieces in the last 3 episodes, and it didn't feel as cohesive as the first part. Even tho the ending was a little bit underwhelming, the epilogue after that was so nice that it left a good feeling in the end.

Plus, his friend is a good guy and was there for her too so I can see why they would end up together. :)

People are already calling the series predictable and yet you want to make it even more predictable with Kayo and Satoru. Just because he saved her life that doesn't mean that she should spend the rest of her life with him, besides he was pretty mutch an adult in a kids body I don't think he cared for her like that. I don't know why people are upset it's not a romance series, it's not that important.

He did still kill people. Satoru just prevented him from killing anyone from Hinazuki onwards. But yeah, the whole thing with the killers motives and who he killed wasn't really explained well. In the manga they go into more depth about it and make it less obvious who the killer is. Really, _Erased_ should of either been 24 episodes long or had 2 seasons 'cos in the manga the bit where Hinazuki gets taken to live with her grandmother is only the half way point. Everything after that was really rushed and skimmed over in the anime.

Spoilers! I think the reason Satoru's Revival powers were never explained was because the story was never about time travel or even about the murder mystery even. It was about Satoru growing as a person from the guy who's cut himself off from other people (he didn't seem to have any close acquaintances other than his mom) and is afraid of opening himself up to people (him being admonished about not showing his true self when drawing his manga) to becoming the person that he is by the end of the show (that entire end scene wouldn't have been possible without him having fostered such a strong bond with the other kids and trying so hard to save them). I know it sounds like a cop out excuse, but I've always seen both the time travel and the murder mystery as just a plot device to force him to grow up. It would explain why he doesn't undergo Revival anymore at the end; Revival already served its purpose. He's already a well-adjusted man so going back in time serves no purpose, character-wise. Still dissapointed the show didn't make the mystery more challenging though.

Jeck Mester It kinda is because Steins;Gate did its character development while also having an interesting mystery and the time travel is logical and internally consistent. What I'm trying to get across is that his time travel power has never really been anything other than weird plot device. Even if it's suddenly revealed that some divine being gifted him with this power to do good or something. it still wouldn't have changed what the story was going for by very much (might have just made it dumber). tl;dr: Don't get too hung up on the logic of the time travel.

The Kayo x Satoru thing was doomed from the start, I saw it from a mile away. This is a very bittersweet anime, the story won't give the hero everything that we hope he would get but he will still have something good coming his way. Thats when the character Airi comes into the picture, either way you make it like Kayo and Satoru ending up, there will be a bittersweet scene where Satoru comes across Airi who never came into his life in the timeline he made. Total strangers after the bond they made disappeared, only one person remembers. That is still bittersweet.

Even without getting spoiled in all those years, I immediately knew who the culprit would be. Afterwards they just kept piling on the hints. To me, the main point of criticism, which you also pointed out, was the main character not trying at all to find out who the culprit is. It would've made everything so much easier. The other side of the story, about Kayo and her family as well as the importance of friends to surround you with and protect you from being alone hit the mark perfectly. While I did see some romantic potential, I wasn't disappointed with how they ended up. All in all it was a great dramatic show, that used the guise of time travel mainly to have a main character that would stand a chance against such an omnipotent foe. And it greatly showed what needs to be done when children are in danger, and how that is something that most children cannot ever do themselves - but also how strong and understanding they can be, if you actually let them.

for everyone who is sad that Kayo and Satoru didn't end up together. The age gap between Airi and Satoru is 12 years, remember how old Kayo was when she was murdered? 12. We even heard Airi call Satoru and idiot, so very much hinted towards that Airi is his original timelines reincarnation of Kayo, meaning that all the timelines are more entangled than we might think. So i can sleep well being convinced that Kayo and Satoru actually ended up together :)

I'd say as a Mystery or Sci-fi this show didn't do well at all. But as a Suspense or Drama it was REALLY good. Even with a high number of plot holes and character inconsistencies, it was a truly entertaining and enjoyable thriller. Also, I completely agree that the impending sense of danger was the best part of it, as the show did a good job at making us care for the characters.

The reason why Satoru's power is never explained is because it's more of a thematic device than a plot component. It embodies his regret and his desire to go back and fix things and so when he no longer has any regret, it ceases to function. It's more of a method that allows us to explore his character. I would say that while it is a cool idea, it completely undermines itself because one of the notes of Satoru's entire character arc is about accepting the past and looking to the future despite the fact that the entire reason he can look ahead now is because he literally went back in time and fixed what was wrong in the first place. Everything but that (and of course the shlocky thriller ending) really worked for me. Great review as ever Aracada, thank you for putting these up.

I actually thought it was a pretty good idea for him to just try and move the children out of danger for the fact that he was in an 11 year old body. So solving who did it wouldn't mean anything for a number of reasons. 1 Being the fact that the obvious murder hasn't done jack and to actually lure them out. he would have to be caught in the act. and 2 being. Hes an 11 year old to everyone else and police would probably think hes just playing some game or something (not always bound to happen but still possible...)XD

My theory on the origin of Revival is that the manifestation of this power stemmed from the very moment when satoru first heard the news that Hinazuki`s body was found. The guilt and trauma that affected him, telling himself over and over again that he couldve saved her, created Revival. This power is supposed to answer his guilt of not being able to save others by rewindjng time to save people. The overarching purpose of Revival, however, was simply to find the killer from 18 years ago, as that is, in my theory, the origin of his power. When he confronted the case 18 years later with the same killer, the true purpose of Revival was realized, causing it to send Satoru back 18 years instead of 5 minutes. After the killer is caught, Revival`s purpose is done, and it disappears. Comments?

+Malcolm Kender So you get an ability to go back in time, just to stop this spree of murders? Doesn't make sense, the time travel was just a plot device and nothing more. The writer was too lazy to explain it, (not sure about the source)and is just making the watcher speculate it. it's lazy and easy to do.
@rokushoji5273

Isaac Gure Even though the show says it brings him back before the event takes place, the show purposely showed the mom's death just to add suspense therefore breaking its rules. It also allowed Satoru to go back in time 18 years to the past in ep 7(i think, idk too lazy to check.) because the plot called for it. Also, I was talking about his theory, not about the killer, but the killer is 1 dimensional and people praise the reveal for it being obvious lmao. I think the reason why the time travel happened is told in the source, but from what I read, it also sounds like a load of bs.

Interesting enough, when the manga was advertised in France, it wasn't done as a crime mystery but rather as a thriller.I did not feel like the anime was even trying to be a mystery, since the director pointed out the criminal several times over the first episodes. Who says the mystery was obvious and shit. Mystery element doesn't necessarily mean who the killer was but also what was his reason of killing. Secondly the teacher was a likeable character which is all the more reason to think he can't be the killer. I was fairly satisfied with the mistery and the reason behind the murders but not with the part where the protagonist went into coma, wasted 15 years and found that kayo married that pathetic excuse of a character. I mean Sotaro and that character were close friend have some sense of brotherhood and don't marry your friends ex girlfriend/crush whatever you wanna call her. I would have been more satisfied if she married any other person not part of their group.

Great ending with the Cowboy Bebop reference. Yes, I thought the 11th opening was really awesome. That was a cool touch. Also, Yashiro was really the only one that could've been the killer. That was minorly annoying. I do agree that there could have been something like him going out on a state with one of the characters, his power activating again, something for him to make it "go on" but not really continue. But, it still was a very sweet ending.

Oh, it was phenomenal. Yes, the mystery was easy (Seriously, the very first time you see the character who will be introduced as the killer later there's a dark shift in animation and music. Come on.), but that wasn't why I watched the show. That would be like saying Clannad is a harem because you don't know if Nagisa will "win." Or that Kaichou Wa Maid-sama is reverse harem for the same reason (you don't know if Usui "wins."). I can't find fault with the show at all, myself. It's exactly what I look for in any media: something to change my perspective and get me to look at something in real life in a way I wouldn't have otherwise. In this case, it's abuse and the importance of a silver tongue. I mean, really, the breakfast with that music and the flashbacks... There are real people (like my own brother and sister) who have lived or are living that. And the moment when Satoru looks back, thinks of his hero, and spouts a perfect farewell one-liner... Priceless. Those things more than make up for any complaint I can form. Heck, even the brevity of the show worked in its favor; going on too long with a topic or story like this would have either been stressful or would have created a lack of interest. Excellent review as always. I'll be sure to pass it along.

The main reason why it is criticised is because of that fault. Considering the goal was to find out who the culprit of the murders was it doesn't do a great job in being unpredictable. I still enjoyed the show immensely but I wish they at least made it less predictable which would of made the reveal a lot more dramatic and added more impact.

+Reborn Mangekyo hmm I think even if ERASED was a mystery, the real mystery isn't *who* the identity of the killer is. It was easy know who did it. But more about why the killer is doing it. I suspected the teacher from the beginning but personally just wanted to know why a headmaster would kill 3 of his students. Personally I think that the main fault was the time-travel. It wasn't explained and was immediately rushed in at dangerous moments for Satoru as a plot device. Steins;Gate does a much better take on time travel but yeah..
