A Silent Voice is finally getting a Theatrical Run in parts of North America, so I figured I'd take a moment to talk about the parts of the film that really sold it to me.

Sandra Karr Well when two things are so great people start comparing them. Legends are always compared to each other, but on the good side, we got 2 brilliant movies in 2016, 2017 didn't have that many good movies. Let's hope 2018 has anime that equal these two masterpieces, if not surpass them :)

On the matter of handicapped people, there's a very nice Masterchef US episode where one of the competitors is nearly totally blind (she can only see vague shadows). She then makes a very good apple pie, and Gordon Ramsey, in an extremely thoughtful gesture, seeing the girl was very unsure of herself and rather convinced she had messed up, starts scratching the pie crust with the knife and telling her to hear the sound of a perfectly baked pie. He then tells her she's a great cook and should be more confident in herself. Not many people would think of doing that, going from "can't you SEE it's good" to "can't you HEAR how good it is".

I am so sick of people knocking on this movie because - "Oh, it missed this from the manga," or "The manga fleshed out these other characters more." This is a FILM. Films are not supposed to be judged by how closely they follow a certain script or book, they are supposed to be judged on how well they stand ALONE. How well it delivers the story it is trying to tell, and this tells it's story SUPERBLY. As someone who hasn't read the manga at all, I am judging this solely on what I saw, and what I saw was well developed characters (except for orange hair guy) that are bared with all of their flaws in an unforgiving manner, a soundtrack so well constructed and executed that every emotion a scene is tryingto convey is so effectively emphasized that you are completely sucked into that moment, direction that handles focus and subtlety it moves and captures moments fluidly and almost never spoon feeds the audience information. Almost every expression on every character is significant. Almost every action is important. Almost every scene looks beautiful. This FILM as a FILM is fantastic. I don't care one bit about the manga.
@jimbob1862
@jimbob1862 6 жыл бұрын
Pablo Gonzalez I think the issue comes from the fact it misses some quite important tenets from the manga. It's a perfectly excellent film on its own, I just think the manga is that bit more better.
@NBlaze53
@NBlaze53 6 жыл бұрын
As someone who also never read the manga I couldn't get past the films pacing and ending. If a film makes me realize it's based of a manga then it's failed as a film. A Silent Voice FEELS like it was originally a manga and that is the films biggest flaw. It's still absolutely fantastic thou. At the end I said "I feel that ending and pacing would be better if this wasn't originally a manga" and that's a bad thing for a film to do.
@PabloGonzalez-dm3xm
@PabloGonzalez-dm3xm 6 жыл бұрын
NBlaze53 Care to elaborate on how it feels like manga? Because, while I did notice a brief issue in pacing really late in, I never got the sense of "this should be a manga." I felt that every character included (again, except for orange hair guy), was explored well enough. I never found myself wondering what happened to a certain character in the end, or I wish I knew a bit more about this person.
@PabloGonzalez-dm3xm
@PabloGonzalez-dm3xm 6 жыл бұрын
Jimbob That's seems like less of an issue, and more of a personal gripe. But maybe if you provided an example of these missed important tenants?

Pablo Gonzalez Only Shoya and Ueno really got conclusions to their character arcs. Yuzuru and Sahara got "guess I'll try harder" conclusions. Kawai doesn't change really at all she still refuses to accept her responsibility. Masibasha doesn't even have a character arc or much of anything. And I can't help but feel they focused too much on Shoya when Shoko was a much more interesting character who I wanted to see grow to accept herself. She fails suicide, gets told to not and then the film goes right back to why Shoya is so depressed and can't face the world, as if they didn't have enough time to finish both their stories. The film gives way more time to some character then others, because it's trying to fill a 2 hour run time. I couldn't help but think "I'm sure in the manga these people have complete arcs." and sure enough, they do. The ending of the film is completely different and the mangas ending gives every character a conclusion to their story. The film ended it's character in a way that made me want to read the manga and find out if these characters had more to them, a film shouldn't make me want to find extra materials to see what happens to its cast, it should do that in the film itself. The film is mainly about Shoya while the manga is about everyone, and I'd be fine with that if the movies poster didn't feature ALL these characters when Shoya is the main focus. And being honest I just don't like Shoya. 2nd is the film structure. It has no narrative flow. No 3 act structure. Sure the character change slowly, but in terms of story progression nothing changes until the night of the festival, which is over 70 minutes into the film.

This movie gave me the last push to start learning my country's sign language. I cannot imagine what being deaf or hearing impaired (I'm sorry if either is offensive, in Hungarian there are to words for deaf, one of which the deaf community views as insulting) is like, but I don't want to miss people who need help or friends just because I can't properly understand them in my own country.

What can I say... A Silent Voice is just... Awesome!!! It tells a story that normal anime wouldn't even dare enter... It tackles about social issues that are constantly happening and yet almost no one seems to try and find answers and solutions to. It's a drama, no doubt... But, it's a drama that will touch the deepest parts of your heart. A Silent Voice is a masterpiece, one that must be watched and experienced by many... It is not perfect, there are times where the story will suddenly jump from one place to another, but those jumps are connected still, thus a normal viewer will still be able to catch up and find themselves understanding everything... It's simple... Everyone should just watch it.

Your name was the visual marvel and something that appeals to the mass audience well but The Silent Voice is a more complete package in both visual and story. The Silent Voice is not going to appeal to everyone and it may be a difficult film to watch for some but for those who does have the patient to sit through it, it's a far superior emotional ride beyond what Your Name can offer. Plus, it's a more meaningful film as well.

The two films are very different and I fail to see why they should be compared. I loved both for different reasons, but don't see them as competitors. It's like comparing Your Lie in April with Yuri on Ice. the reason why Silent voice is much better for some.. because it very down to earth and how close to reality it is.. the perspective of bullies or been bullied.. how it can effect your mental state with withdrawal and suicide.. all of this rarely shown in anime so to watch how both of them gathered up and work it out for each other is beautiful.. purely beautiful

That is the entire point of the movie . It is about forgiveness primarily. It reflects the mirror on the viewer and asks if you can find it in you to forgive. Nishiko couldn't forgive herself for her deafness. The bully couldn't forgive himself for his bullying. Despite in all honesty, both of them being not responsible for the hate they receive.

For the longest time, I wasn't able to watch this movie because of the beginning of the movie. Most specifically, the bullying. I may not be deaf, but I know how it feels to be alienated like she was, and I also know the feeling of being a waste of space...that I do nothing but hurt others...that the only thing that seems to be the only option to fix everything is to kill myself. So, I was afraid that it would make me feel worse, and that I'd end up doing something stupid. Now, after watching it literally 40 minutes ago, this film hit me really deep. It dug up my past and teared into it. But it really helped me put some things into perspective. It reminded me why I didn't jump that one day I had got up on the ledge. For a pot of the movie, I was paralyzed, unable to look away from the screen. It helped me settle what happened in my past, and gave me a place to move forward from. If anyone reads this, you didn't have to. I typed all this out to just...put my story out there...to shout into the void, I guess. Anyway, thanks, if you did read this.

Your Name was a beautiful film, but trying to compare it to A Silent Voice is like trying to compare apples and oranges. Both films are must watches imo.

Madison King The thing is the manga added more depth like the reason we see no Father in the Nishimiya family and the reason why Yuzuru has short hair. Also one scene I liked in the manga was what Mashiba did to that asshole of a teacher. The movie did a good job of fitting important stuff in to the time frame though. I liked both but enjoyed the manga a bit more.

Jin ! Your right now that I think about, TBH I think the fact that I watched the movie first meant that I didn't really feel what was missing and then I retroactively attributed parts of the characters depth given to them in the manga to the anime characters, I do remember now how the Nishimiya family's situation was more fleshed out and how that changed how their interactions worked a bit, like how the two mothers reconciled. I don't quite now where I stand on Mashiba because he really only existed to be a foil for ishiida and I have the manga ishiida and the anime ishiida completely mixed in my head so it's hard to compare how they were differently characterized. One thing I will stand firm on is that the ending to the anime was better. I really think you get a more complete appreciation from watching then reading. Also one thing I could never pinpoint in both the anime and mangaand it must be a japan thing but wtf was the point of randomly inserting Maria's dad, I mean her mom was never present so did the japanese audience just need physical explanation for maria beyond, her dad is brazilian??

Madison King. The only part I liked about Mashiba was when he did the thing to the teacher the rest he was meh. I also watched the movie first but I think both endings were pretty good I liked anime ending because of where they chose to end it while the manga ending gave us a bit more closure for their future. Also when I read the manga I played the movie OST in the background which was really nice. Both were good in their own right since the movie obviously had a time limit to fit stuff in but I liked how the manga gave more depth to some characters like Yuzuru's past and hair style. Also nice chatting to you!

For those interested in the differences between the manga and anime: The manga goes much more into detail when it comes to Ishiro's frieds. They have their own little substories and relationships between each other and a whole "movie making subplot" has been cut out of the anime. The main plot events are pretty much the same, except of the ending. Nevertheless, i strongly recommend the manga at least in addition to the movie. The more in depth personalities of the characters in the manga enhance the emotional impact of the story. There's a reason why it's so highly rated. Still, the movie is one of the best manga adaptations i've ever seen and does the manga justice. A definite masterpiece.

I highly suggest the manga to anyone who enjoyed the movie. There's a few things removed from the movie for the sake of time, such as the movie project that forces all of the old friends together, as well as how the teacher really treats the main characters. It's also a little easier to understand motives. Not to mention the tons of extra family interactions.

Nice video, I just noticed a few misunderstandings (Maybe you missed it, there is a lot of material in the movie). Ueno did know that what she did was wrong, she explicitly says it in the film. Kawai was the one who believed she never did anything wrong. I see that parallel to society, but I believe that's only a small part of the movie in the first half. I love this movie so much, I'd watch it everyday if I could. Keep up the good work Arkada!

This is officially my all time favorite and best anime i've ever seen. To start off at the beginning Inshida and Ueno would bully her and make fun of her and then years later Inshida starts to become traumatize of his actions when he encounters her again. This hit me emotionally because I was bullied myself in middle school cuz of the way i looked. But anyways I related Shouko so much she is probably the sweetest and kindest anime girl I've ever seen I would love to be friends with her and considering that this is a romance drama film the movie focused on the theme of friendship and forgiveness. Pet Girl of Sakurasou also had a similar way of handling it which i also adore that show but man this film had my heart torn especially how wholesome and cute it is. Ueno is a fantastic character portraying a person that still hasn't changed and is still in denial and when she saw that Inshida changed she denies it. It's also a reason why It's really sad cuz some people don't change even years after. Shouko and Inshida man.

What really makes this movie stand out, and the most brilliant about it (although the whole movie itself is brilliant) is the soundtracks. They're not just there to 'fill in', they're there as one of the most integral parts of how the film progresses. How the sounds are muted reflecting Shouko's deafness and Shouya's basically shuts himself from social life, to near the end where the orchestra plays at full blast telling us that Shouya finally finds his redemption, where he finally realizes that the world around him is truly beautiful. I emphasize enough how brilliant the soundtracks are, the most brilliant on ANY film I've watched.

The redemption of Shouya and the film of Koe no Kotachi is a piece of art that has moved me... like nothing else. It is simply... incredible. The characters in this film are real - you’ve met them and it’s a real life film that deals with real life issues. Shouya’s acceptance for realising his sins and his quest to redeem himself and change himself into a better person is amazing, never never have I despised a character in the beginning of a film and rooted for them like nothing else by the end of it in only 2 hours. This film is a masterpiece - Shouya’s amazing family, his relationship with God and Shoko Nishimiya as a character is just bliss to watch. 10/10 for sure, I’m glad I had a chance to have been been able to watch both Kimi no Na Wa and A Silent Voice within this year. The magnum opus of both directors, go watch it in the cinemas if you have the chance - I wish I did!!

Alternate name *Koe no Katachi* *Thoughts* ...This pulled me in at the start but quickly became cringe inducing...with poor choices and painful characters to endure this was quite unpleasant for the beginning section. but after getting by that it became a story of redemption and acceptance which was pleasant enough to get through.the ending was satisfying as well. this is was a okay watch. the flaws prevent it from being good. but the concept of a deaf main character is unique enough to recommend giving this a chance. *Whats wrong with this* i know its for the plot but i don't get the lead as a kid. he was not in any situation which that kind of personality made sense to me. he had a loving mother (the father was not even mentioned let alone shown) and he was not bullied in school. he was just a empty character being a piece of shit for the sake of being a piece of shit. The money burning scene...first of all burning money by itself is unacceptable...but this this particular case it is even worse... the mother threatens to burn the money that her son gave her to pay her back for something. he was going to commit suicide and she found out so this led to her thinking it was a great idea to burn money... this is extremely wrong because 1.were talking about a person that wants to die. adding MORE stress is not going to help 2. ...she burned the money anyway so that threat is gone...which destroyed any incentive not to die.... The bitch girl...the girl that for pretty much the entire movie was just mean. not for any decent reason either. she almost did not develop at all either...her apparent reason for hating the deaf girl so much is because... "She did not attempt to understand her" what does that even mean? there was nothing to understand! and there is no reason to hate someone just because they smile! It showed the blond guy at the end even tho him and the male lead were still on bad terms.everyone cared about him to some degree. but this 1 character as far as i saw was in a hate relationship with the lead. *Favorite moments* i loved when they principle (i assume) came in and was looking for who was bulling the girl and the teacher of the glass just called the lead character out. in a angry way letting him clearly know he did something really wrong. this is something i don't see in anime often as its more the teachers are not that mature. or "can't" do anything for the students. every moment the deaf girl smiled because she had such a hard life it made me happy to see her happy.

Shouya wasn't just an introvert. He had depression and anxiety. If people didn't notice, when Kawai told Toshi ( the red head character ) that Shouya bullied Shouko, he covered his mouth and felt as if he was choking or felt bile in his throat. He had an anxiety attack. It's not just panic and stuff. It's sometimes slow and painful.

the bit about how the kids and how the teachers just lets the bullying happen and how "normal" people mistreat and refuse to accept disabled people and expect them to become "normal". That bit hit so hard. Also Ueno... I want to punch her in the face and kick her off a bridge. Like... I really hated her character, especially when she keeps blaming Shoko for everything and actually assults her... TWICE. I wanted one of the characters to snap at her and yell at her. She was definitely a bad person.

I honestly don't know how to compare Your Name to this film. The stories and messages are so vastly different that you can only compare, as you did, adaptation fidelity. Not even visuals or soundtrack would make sense, first because Shinkai and KyoAni have their own individual styles, both extremely beautiful but quite different in several aspects, though they may seem closer when you compare them to more radical ways of making visuals tell a story or contribute to the plot, like Kill la Kill. The music will or at least should be content-based, so again, it will be very different and its own thing in each film.

Subscribed! But honestly I agree that "a silent voice" is a better film, most teenagers around the world, even kids around the world, all relate to the film. But as for "you're name" well, we can't really relate. I for one have been picked on for not having a voice in the first place, so I understand what shoko felt to an extent, though with me things never got as far as shoya took them, I still know the pain of feeling different, isolated, and worthless. I cried a lot during this film, how he tried to fix his actions really brought this story to another level, he didnt just ask to be forgiven, he asked to be friends, he spent his time trying to fix it instead of asking, that shows he really was determined. (This isnt a spoiler) and what he did towards the very end really made me like shoya, dispite how he treated people, he really wasn't a bad guy. If tiu read the manga you will know why he did everything he did, well that's enough of my comment I'm sorry haha, but seriously man I liked that video and I can agree with you, wish I had seen the showing though, but the disk is fine too!

the story from the manga is better, it's much more complete, and the ending is way better and satisfying. the movie cut a lot of story, some of the chapter just go in few frames, like the music montage in the start of the movie, the manga explain it in few chapters. Also like the time when Ishida's mom' ear is bleeding, in the movie it's just show up in few frames, the viewer should imagine what happened. but in the manga we know the story what happened to the mother ear. there is also story about Sahara's dream to be a designer and model. read the manga if you love this movie, you'll appreciate it more..

The Truth actually. They didn't show the part is because they want you to see the world in your own eyes. Now imagine this. You got into trouble in the same way. Same thing happened. Would you ever have the guts to ask your mother what happened? You would blame yourself for sure and think that your are the sole of everything. You would never want to know but you know it's your fault and the producer dose that in a very beautiful way.

I watched the movie like two or three weeks ago here in germany. Loved the manga, so i thought i'd love the movie too. But let me just say one thing. There are, like... FIVE VOICE ACTORS IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY. My ears bled afterwards and ironically the deaf girl had the best voice acting by far. Kind of ruined it for me.

Yes, dubbed in german. Yes, the voice acting was as bad as it sounds.

One of the main reasons I preferred this to your name was its soundtrack. My god, does it feel like a breath of fresh air. You'd be hard-pressed to find animated films these days with mood setters as dynamic and visceral as the ones in A Silent Voice.

Truly beautiful review. A little late, but I’m about to watch this movie for the second time. Time to get my pillow ready.
