I know it was just a small side note here, but honestly, a video that looked at the watching habits of different types of anime watchers would be an interesting watch 🤔 Speaking for myself, I used to be much more heavily into anime and would watch dozens of show in a year. Nowadays though, both as I get older and as I get more interested in JRPGs, I find that I'm watching a lot less than I used to. And when I do watch an anime, there's a high probability that it'll be a comedy or a low-key slice of life. And this isn't because I dislike the more intense, dramatic or action packed stuff; i still enjoy those shows a lot! But between work and hyperfocusing on a story-intensive JRPG in my spare time, I'm often finding I often have the mental energy or motivation leftover for a complex, dramatic or high energy anime. Thus, of the 15 or so shows I may watch in any given year, of those I'll be more likely to watch through something like Laid Back Camp, Bocchi the Rock, Restaurant to another World, Reincarnated as a Sword etcetera. Something low-key to wind down before bed.

Tbf, I think for the majority of anime watchers a show needs to reach a more mainstream level of popularity before it even enters their radar; shows like your Demon Slayer, Frieren, Dungeon Meshi, Kaiju No. 8 etc. Hell, for this season the shows that probably came closest were Deer Friend Nokotan and Oshi no Ko, so it makes sense that the more casual viewer only watches 5-6 shows per year. People like us who actually look at the upcoming lists are much less common, and I guess more fiercely defending of our picks as a whole. For me, this season’s standouts were really just the ongoings from last season. Yatagarasu and DeDeDeDe have both been absolute standouts that fell under the radar. Yatagarasu didn’t pick up much interest originally, but was slowly building up viewers as the season went on, only for the couple-weeks break for cour 2 then delays due to Olympic scheduling killing its momentum. The historical-fantasy setting and politics/mystery were incredibly well done. DeDeDeDe had so many problems with dubtitles, starting mid-season and therefore missing a lot of start-of-season hype, with people just generally forgetting it existed by the time it actually aired, and just generally being a much slower building anime (tbh, the MCs could also be quite off putting for some). That being said, it might genuinely be up there with some of the best sci-fi anime. The way it handled it’s themes and subject matter was fantastic. Of the shows that actually started this season, I think the only two that I actually was excited for every week were Makeine and Senpai is an Otokonoko… maybe Elusive Samurai too, but that was kind of hit or miss (someone REALLY doesn’t like hand-drawing horses on that team lol). Makeine was just a solid high-school slice of life with pretty fun characters and great interpersonal relationships that actually had me chuckling out loud at points. Senpai is an Otokonoko was surprisingly my favourite romance show (even above Roshidere and Giji Harem). It was genuinely just so sweet even with all the drama, and the interactions between the main trio/each of their journeys of self-discovery were great. I hear it’s actually getting a movie, which will be awesome to see. Honourable mentions to Oshi no Ko and Wistoria which I also enjoyed, and MHA which has surprisingly reeled me back in with a vengeance.

Yeah, after the first two episodes, I was like “they can’t keep up this gag all season, there’s no way that will work”. And then they did, and somehow it felt awesome and wholesome and fun? The highlight for me was probably “I parry the deadman”, where the obviously insane opponent becomes increasingly confused by how *weird* Noor is. I could not stop laughing. Very silly, but also very sweet anime.

I can't even agree that this past season was a slow season when I finished watching 12 new anime during the Summer season while only finishing 8 new anime during the Spring season. It's definitely a matter of tastes because it certainly isn't a matter of quality. For me, in the Spring season, the new anime I finished that season watching were: Kaiju No. 8, Wind Breaker, Spice & Wolf 2024, Go Go Loser Ranger, Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night, Girls Band Cry, Train to the End of the World, and Ooi! Tonbo. In this past Summer season, I finished/am finishing: Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian, Wistoria Wand & Sword, Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines! No Longer Allowed in Another World, Iseikai Suicide Squad, I Parry Everything, The Elusive Samurai, The Ossan Newbie Adventurer...Became Invincible, Shoshimin: How to Become Ordinary, Atri - My Dear Moments, Bye Bye Earth, and Nare Nare Cheer For You. Going back all the way to Winter I believe I also only finished 8 new shows throughout that season. I certainly don't think that the number of shows that catch one's interest and the number of quality shows in that season are closely related. This past season might have been slow to some people, but it certainly wasn't for me.

I only watched 2 and a half shows this season myself. I fell off of Nokotan halfway lmao. Atri, My Dear Moments has a really intriguing setting and has a nostalgic air to it, possibly because it's also a visual novel adaptation. However, I think it's struggling with pacing in the back half of episodes. Though, I like the story enough, I may end up picking up the game to finish it (even if it's supposedly quite different from the show) My favorite show this season is Shoushimin, How to Become Ordinary. I never watched Hyouka, but I found this series delightful through and through. The protags' chemistry, the cinematography and art, the mystery-solving detective work; extremely cozy yet still has moments of high tension. I will watch Monogatari eventually...

I think too many anime channels fancy themselves as critics searching for the next all-timer series. Most of the time, it's just flawed, but watchable shows. It's entertainment, not always high art. You've never shied away from letting us know your true feelings on a series, and I've discovered many series I would have never considered and yet enjoyed. "Best" is just subjective taste, not holy writ. I watch your channel for your insight on series great and small.

I have two nights out of every week that are basically reserved for new anime, so it puts a floor on the number of new shows that I watch every season (although I might find myself coming home a little later if a season is particularly weak). I can usually find enough that's worth watching, although I agree that summer is rarely as stacked as fall in any given year.
@mcgrewАй бұрын
I am also an outlier in that I'm watching a lot of anime, but mostly because I'm continuing my learning journey with Japanese and it's a good way to get listening practice. That said, while this season was a bit lackluster overall, to my surprise my top show turned out to be Mayonaka Punch. I started it just for something to watch but I enjoyed it much more than I expected to.

I frankly don't even try to catch up with the seasons, I just take note if there are interesting shows in general. Then, if the reviews are good, I'll check them at some point in the future. Ramen Akaneko and Dungeon People? You absolute legend! Those were some of my favourite anime this season too! Extremely underrated shows, imo. Dungeon People was genuinely contending for my #1 this season (the other was Mayonaka Punch, but you already said you didn't like that one in the other video).
@dvillines26Ай бұрын
yeah the number of people that watch a LOT of anime is pretty low. watching seasonally is exhausting to begin with. I've completed 8 Summer shows, with three more not having finished quite yet (OnK 2, Atri, Monogatari), and three shows I'll maybe probably complete (Shoushimin, Pseudo Harem, Quality Assurance). there were several shows I almost didn't finish and only pushed through on stubbornness. this is not normal. it's okay to only finish a couple of shows. but I haven't had as many hard drops this season. I think it was just Wistoria, Noko-tan, and Cheer for You. and I kind of soft-dropped Dungeon People and Magical Girl & Evil Lieutenant because I had other relaxation shows that worked better. and there were four shows I intended to watch and just never did, which I'm guessing if I had picked any of them up I would have fallen off them. The thing about Summer 2024 is that there's very little in the way of universally loved series. I mean, Makeine, but, well, clearly even that's not for everyone. so much this season was niche or had some weird crippling flaw. like, let's go through what I liked other than Makeine Monogatari Off/Monster Season - my actual AotS pick but it's Monogatari, lmao, hard to get more niche Oshi no Ko s2 - I guess this is the closest to consensus popular, it's the prestige show of the season Mayonaka Punch - exceptionally niche, except what niche even is it except the one that specifically appears to me and my love of dirtbag female protagonists and lesbian vampires VTuber Legend - very niche. Days with My Stepsister - really fucking boring (complimentary). I'm not joking, it was kind of one of my unwinding shows, but I can completely understand the perspective of someone who just does not understand the show whatsoever or considers it offensively pretentious Senpai is an Otokonoko - the chibis, lol. the friggin' chibis. nonstop. Cafe Terrace s2 - okay no this show is perfect and everyone should be watching, idgaf, if you watch one dumb harem romcom anime in your life, you could do so much worse. like Quints. fuck Quints. this is better than Quints, FIGHT ME AT THE DENNY'S PARKING LOT, I'LL TAKE ALL COMERS.

Yeah Summer is definitely like the 'down' season again. It has good stuff, just not the hype stuff. I think the most 'hype' show was Wistoria, but it always came with the caveat "yeah, you've seen this before." This year in general just has been busy, so even the shows I want to watch are just hard to keep up with "do i WANT to watch this right now, or do i want to use my time elsewhere?" factor. I fell off a few shows I'm still interested in, it's just more convivent to marathon or whatever. Sometimes the niche picks are all you need to get by a season. Fall's looking to have some highlights, it'll be interesting what lasts until the end!

My wife and I agree on Dungeon People and Ramen Akaneko, as well as being big fans of Yatagarasu. And Otaku Elf is just as good as you say. We also would rewatch or hope for second seasons for those as well as Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Dahlia in Bloom (worldbuilding!), Nokotan, Makeine, and No Longer Allowed in Another World from this season. But it’s ok- Blue Box is just days away… Honestly, just keep sharing your own taste. These off the cuff videos supplementing the seasonals are great. It's kind of a relief to hear someone say this, because that's how I've felt for this season as well. The main difference is which "oddball, can't really recommend it but I liked it anyhow show" I stuck with, which in my case was "I Parry Everything". Which is just ridiculous in premise, so-so in animation, has a stupidly overpowered MC, and yet....and yet the main character, despite being overpowered is such a lovable doofus that I can't help keep watching it. Doesn't make any sense to me, either. Vis a vis the number of shows? So far in 2024, I finfished 11 shows in Winter, 13 shows in Spring...and just the one in Summer.

Dungeon people is amazing. The next volume of the manga just dropped and stuff is just wild. It's also actually the only show that I finished this season. I paused pseudo harem after reading in the comments that they butchered the confession scene, which was one of my favorite scenes from the manga. And yes, I also drop a lot of shows just because I don't have any motivation to watch the next episode. Most shows that I watch aren't even remotely popular
