Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is crucial for vision. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in the eye (intraocular pressure). Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in people over the age of 60, but it can affect people of all ages.
Risk Factors:
Age (especially over 60)
Family history of glaucoma
High intraocular pressure
Certain medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension)
Long-term use of corticosteroid medications
Thin corneas
Glaucoma is diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam, including measuring eye pressure, inspecting the drainage angle, evaluating the optic nerve, and testing peripheral vision.
Early detection is crucial for preventing vision loss. Regular eye exams are recommended, especially if you are at higher risk.
