Have always found you need a good coating of ancient jasper to get the reds. Brushing on can take 7 coats. Your method is much better. Ancient jasper is great over other glazes.

Beautiful! I actually liked the bowls with brown clay. Yeah, the white clay bowls are gorgeous....but would still buy the brown clay bowls! Thanks for demonstrating this glaze for us!

I think this is my favorite glaze I have seen. Amazing I love the gray and red contrast and that green where it is extra thick. 👍

I have used this glaze many times before... just love this glaze! I did get a lot of dripping so be careful when firing. I would use something under my pots so I would save the kiln shelf. Keep up the great content!

I've only just started exploring brushed on Amaco glazes, and Ancient Jasper is already a favorite for dripping off the rim. It does run, though, so definitely use cookies if using it lower.

I've found that ancient jasper blisters a lot on redstone as well, so it might be a more common thing to happen

I bought the "same" glaze a few weeks ago and I've been using it in my projects. One of the differences I notice is for some reason, it appears red in the unfired form on the test pieces, but it appears maroon or burgundy to me in real life, so I'm thinking they must have done a reformulation in there somewhere. It's not actually clear to me if you used a brown clay body or a red clay body, since you used those terms interchangeably during the video. I will say that I've only been glazing on brown clay bodies and I've gotten very similar results to what you had in the video. I'm actually testing several clay bodies with this glaze; white, red, and brown. I've only tested brown so far and I've basically gotten the same black/olive-green/red results. I've also gotten pinholing to some degree. The instructions on this glaze state that it's supposed to react BETTER on red clay bodies, which is why I specifically shelled out for Red B-mix. I've yet to try that combination, but I'll try and report back after I have the single cup glazed. I am also testing a white clay body, which is WC609 from Laguna. Your results with the white clay body give me a lot of hope. I brush all of these glazes on and while I've made efforts to go heavy on the glaze on the inside of bowls, I still only get a red disk at the bottom with some red creeping up on the inside of the bowl, but never a totally saturated red color with hints of olive green and black like you show.

I have had numerous troubles with this glaze in that it falls off the pots and or melts and runs ruining the pot and shelves. Application thickness are to be carefully observed. Last firing resulted in 8 pots having to be throw out and two shelves destroyed plus the bottom of the kiln covered with glaze. I was able to salvage 2 of the 10 pots. I like the glaze but the price can be high to figure out its capability. Go to etsy and search "crownpointpottery" (one word), I posted the two flower pots that survived the firing. The flower pots have fluted lips. I hope to hone in this glaze application. The two etsy flower pots where fired at cone 5 instead of cone 6 in hopes to prevent running. I also soaked the firing for 15 minutes. There's a fine balance to this glazes application, it needs thickness to get the red'ish tones but if its to thick it falls off the pot and melts all over anything it touches.

I had the same experience with Ancient Jasper. Had to throw out 3 pots that melted to kiln cookies. Will only use it inside bowls and on rims now. Also, mine didn’t come out so red, more like brown/black with some red coming through. I did pour it just as was done in this video. On a previous firing when I brushed on 3 coats it only came out black. In my opinion this is a very tricky glaze to use. I’m not going to put it on my favorite pieces, for fear of suboptimal results. Great video, though, the pieces came out beautifully for him!

Is this a glaze that you have designed for dipping instead of painting. For instance in a small pint container? I love the outcome of your glazing but I definitely do not have enough glaze to dip.

Hi Dante! Not sure if you have answered this question before. When you say "your lumos glaze", is it a glaze you made yourself?

I've got some pieces I'm planning on using this on, layering over various glazes with brown clay. I'm also using Palladium... have you used that? Any thoughts? I'm trying to find a layer combo that leaves the palladium almost a metallic black with multicolor undertone? Just started throwing and I'm in LLLUUUURRRRVVVVEEE.

Has anyone else experienced this glaze wiping off after it's been fired? Like the inside of the mug or bowl after being used and washed? Is this glaze harmful to humans? I know it days food safe but just curious

Great video! I love your glaze reviews... super helpful and I really appreciate it. I have this glaze and pretty clear to me that I am underutilizing it. I have a general glaze question though. I saw that you glazed the rim of the mug with AJ first and then the entire mug with your white glaze. I thought you got a great result. Usually I glaze the entire piece first and then the glaze on the rim next. Does it matter the order you apply the glaze? Would you have to gotten the same result if you had dipped the mug in white glaze first.? I know this sounds like such a basic question but I am pretty new to this pottery gig and trying to learn how glazes work. Thanks!!!

I probably would have gotten a different result. Glaze layering does not work like a lot of people think it does. If you put one glazed on first and then another glaze a lot of the time it will look completely different if you put the secondary glaze on first and then the other one. Tldr: the order in which you glaze things does matter

Earth Nation Ceramics Thanks Dante! It would never occurred to me put the glaze on in that order and it came out great. I am gonna start mixing things up a little more. Again love your videos...keep me coming. Just subscribed to your podcast too!

The order makes a very big difference. When I make test tiles with layering glazes I always test both ways (a over b and b over a). Most of the time the results are not identical.

So, what caused the blistering on the dark clay? Incorrect heat?

The bowls I just glazed and fired came out almost black. No pretty redness at all what do you think I did wrong. I poured it on like you did in the video.

Very cool, I want some! I have two questions: 1) why do you think you got blisters on the brown clay? 2) what do you mean by "it could also be a result of the gravity in the kiln"?
@EarthNationCeramics
@EarthNationCeramics 4 жыл бұрын
I stated in the video that it was a thick vs. Thin application but it could have just been the glaze running that changed the color. Secondly the blistering comes from the type of play I was using. It happens often with Cassius Clay

That looks bloating on the body. It usually comes out when its body exposed the temperature that clay cannot stand but this case, only the potter knows that. Bloating problem is caused by a bunch of factors
