Glazing a Cup: with Dip and Pour Glazes

Dipping and Pouring glazes can be the fastest and easiest way to glaze your pottery.
This is the method I was taught when I was first learning pottery and is still my favorite way to glaze. You can create fabulous layered looks and color combinations with this style of glazing.

Hello, thank you so much for your tutorials! I’m so grateful to find you! Besides you’re a beautiful person inside to out. I’ve tried to go to your site on my iPad and phone but it wants me to log in instead of creat account. I’ll go to a pc during the week. First let me encourage you to look at wine making equipment because they transfer so nicely. Visit your local wine supply store and ask a Out brushes and drill mixers... they’re fabulous. Next, I’m still quite an amateur. I started with craft day with my grandchildren and have become addicted and NEED more. I’m appreciative of the info about how to organize a studio, how to work without running water in the studio, and that even a pro can have a “miss fire”, (yes I’m a shooter too). I too live in the country and want to figure out a functional workspace. Finally let me encourage everyone, I have my formal dining area set up with a craft table and ceramics. Having a shelf full of molded bisque ware will draw a crowd of folks to your table. My daughter in-law often brings her sister, niece and nephew to hang out at my house to paint/glaze ceramics...MY HOUSE..IS THE PLACE TO BE!! I’m loving it! My grad kids beg to come over to paint. When I’ve had raw clay, I’m amazed how attracted the adults are... it’s truly the gathering place.

Fun places to go buy a bunch of plastic toilet brushes the kind that are round with spikes all around and you'll never go back to that drill. The drill does not get into the corners is good a quick whisk with the toilet bowl brush and you'll never ever go back to that

I wondered the same thing about scrapping down the sides of the bucket. I was wondering about the bubbly pin holes that I could see on the freshly dipped mug. Do you finger rub those out when the glaze is dry or do you let them stay and hopefully the fired glaze will cover them up? I can't watch the live broadcasts because that's my supper cooking time but I still watch them when you put them up. And to Kevin, Go Tigers. Hubby and I got a tour of Death Valley Stadium to include the president's sky boxes, touch the rock, go on the field etc. Was wonderful!

I don't rub away the bubbly pin holes, they will just melt away in the kiln. I'll tell Kevin about your tour, he will be so jealous! Go Tigers!

Yes, I do when a lot of glaze builds up on them. Also when I do this I sieve the entire bucket of glaze again. :)

Not really because then those chunks can stick to the pieces you are glazing and cause some issues with glaze thickness and the way it looks. :)

Aren't dry glazes less expensive than brush on glazes. Either way we pay too much for shipping, everything comes by air to Hawai'i. Also was told not to mix brush on with dipping glazes.

Dry glazes are less expensive that brush on but not everyone wants to mix up their own glazes. I was told not to mis brush on and dipping too but then I did it and you know what it was fine, actually better than fine I loved the results. As long as both are food safe then there shouldn't be an issue. Of course you should always test any new glaze combos first just to be sure they are compatible and they don't crawl or bubble. :)

Great Vid, thank you for taking the time. Two quick questions. 1) For your bottoms, do you apply underglaze and sgraffito while bone dry, bisque, then apply your wax for glazing? 2) You didn't mention specific gravity of your glazes. Will you be doing a glaze mixing and specific gravity vid?

I apply my underglaze when the piece is leather hard then carve through. I have a video called signing your work where I show how I do it. I wax the bottom after bisque firing and before glazing. I don't use specific gravity when mixing glazes.... shocking I know but when I learned glaze chemistry we mixed using the finger test method and over time I have just learn what the thickness of each glaze I use should be. I know that this is not very scientific and many people want to know the specific gravity so for all of the Clayscapes Pottery glazes I use and show in this video the spec. grav. for each glaze is listed on their website (clayscapespottery.com) it's in their mixing instructions. :)

I heard if you dip drill to clean it every time you will have enough glaze. there is enough to make a scrap glaze which could come out any different color it possibly can be so what are your thoughts on this

If you layered the cream over a black glaze would jt give the same effect? And if you added purple on top would the purple run with the cream

You can take your pottery to a studio and pay to have them fire it. It is done all the time.

The most common ingredients for glazes are: clays, silica, feldspars, oxides, opacifiers and other minerals. :)

I noticed your bucket said Cone 6 but you said you fired to Cone 5. I know it’s not a lot of difference in temp but still I have always been puzzled as to why some brands say Cone 5/6 others say Cone 5

Most glazes that say they are cone 5 or 6 can go to either temp,. The most important thing is the clay. I use laguna Bmix 5 which is a cone 5 clay so that is why I fire to cone 5. If I was using a cone 6 clay then I'd fire to cone 6. :)

We fire our gas kiln to cone 6 all the time, even bisque with it on occasion
